Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

lifetime!

well, actually you are usually charged a small fee for the spa treatment that they recommend you do annually, and more major repairs are all available...there are only a few things I've heard of that couldn't be fixed, like rain water drop marks on Natural Chamonix, that sort of thing...

I have a friend that just sent her Bearn to be re-stitched - can come back looking like new!

As far as a warrenty, the bags are almost guaranteed to have no issues when you purchase, as these things are thoroughly checked before the bag even leaves Paris - you would never find a bag at a H boutique with a fault.

So the wallets have the lifetime warranty too? Is the re-stitching free?

i don't own a birkin yet so I cannot say.. one thing is for sure, i want to get one in the next 2 yrs... a blue jean 35 cm birkin or maybe something in the shade of purple.. as for the leather, I have not decided yet...

If it's the "look" you are after, there are tons of bags modeled after the Birkin. But if it is the status, the Birkin is the way to go. I would go for a black bag or dark brown...something timeless. This is not a trendy bag, this is a classic BIG investment item and you want to be able to carry it forever. Since Oprah won't do business with them anymore, maybe you can get one of her bags. Then again, that is a LOT of money to spend on a bag. For me, anyway.

Why wont Oprah do business with them anymore?

nah, I think there is a small fee involved....but they do last such a long time! Many members here own bags that are 50+ years old!

GF/all-

I own a togo Birkin but it's just a few years old. However, yesterday I received an Hermes Pan pochette in black box leather which I purchased from Luxury-Zurich. It's a g circle which I believe means it's from 1977. That's nearly 30 years old. Yet it is as beautiful and functional and classic and stylish as when it was made. How many 30 year old bags- other than H- can you say that about? The exterior looks amazing and the interior is as soft as silk. I can tell from the hardware that it was used by the prior owner and not just stored away. It doesn't need it at the moment, but during the next 30 years of use I can bring it to H to have the leather reconditioned. Imagine buying any other bag and asking to have it serviced (by a craftsperson who knows and understands its needs) 40 or 50 years after it was first purchased. Yes H bags are over the top expensive but these are bags for a lifetime.

the bag is a headturner, people would come up to you and praise your bag,it's amazing! my friend ordered for a 35cm gold and 35cm bluejean in switzerland hermes, and paid a downpayment of 2k usd for 2 birkins. after 1.5 yrs, she got a call that the bag is ready for pickup. since we live in asia, she had the bag sent out to hk so she could pick it up there. if she had it shipped from switzerland to manila, she'll have to pay the taxes, customs, and shipping which will total to 2k usd. she figured, it's less costly to personally pick up the bag in hk.

This is what I know about the Birkin:
1. That it may be the best bag purchase because it implies the greatest status.
2. It is timeless.
3. It is very very expensive. It costs $5,000 for leather and if you want crocodile, that'll set you back about $19K.
4. It is hard to get a hold of, waitlists etc. If you want to buy an Hermes Kelly back you will have to join a waiting list for up to a year.
5. All the "it" people have one or more.
6. Hermes is reputed for naming their Kelly Bag after Grace Kelly. The bigger version is called the Birkin.

Am I right? Is it really timeless? Does anyone know how expensive the least pricey Birkin is? How long is the waitlist? Is it more worthwhile to save your money towards one birkin than spend money on fads that pass through the years? Any information appreciated.

A word of caution, you will never stop at 1 :s

And also, after you owned an Hermes, you will never look at other brands again :graucho:

that's so true! you feel fashionably superior over others when you're wearing it. before i said i only wanted to get 1, and i got 2 instead. and realized i'm about to get my third haha, its crazy. in fact, im thinking of selling my prada bags since they're already accumulating dust in my closet:graucho:

In reference to "the obtainable" part of this thread...what has been your experience? Once you 'finally' obtained the Birkin......how fast did you get the 2nd, 3rd, etc... ?

I purchased my first from Hermes 2-3 months ago...I am currently doing "research" for my second in terms of color, leather, etc. I plan to "order" my second before the holidays... My tentative plan (that shared with DH) is one per year... LOL...I could have a "full set" (each letter of the alphabet) by retirement...but...1/2 dozen seems quite reasonable... :shame:

Do these bags have a warranty? If so, for how many years?

not as such but i have 3 vintage Hermes bags - a Trim from 1977, a rouge box kelly from 1962 and a vintage Sandrine from the 1960's. Hermes will send them back to Paris and repolish etc for about £90. they can also replace lost locks. keys etc. that's not bad considering they are 40 years old - when i tried to get one of my vintage LV Chantilly bags repaired because all the leather had cracked they told me it was not economic to do it and would have been cheaper to buy a whole new bag. seemed such a shame as the monogram canvas and lining was fine.
