Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

I say it's really worth the money. I had my doubts before but after visits at the Hermes shop to check out the stuff they have, and my recent purchase of the wallet, it's amazing!

Some day I will have a Kelly. Definitely worth it for the beautiful craftmanship and quality.

Welcome! Hope you stay and play. A Kelly is a wonderful thing to start saving for! I think it's one of the most beautiful bags ever made.

I should be putting the money away in a high-yield savings account, but I've been putting my extra $ per month into my Hermes "savings account." Kelly or Birkin, I haven't decided yet, but I'm going to save over $10,000 before I tempt myself at an Hermes boutique, so I can have more options, so to speak. :) Or at least I won't feel as bad about paying off the credit card bill with a good start...lol!

I consider an Hermes a great investment, from a monetary point of view the very least - most of the Hermes I've seen (on Ebay) have been sold for much more than what they were bought for. That's not even considering the pure unadulterated pleasure that a woman or man experiences from owning an Hermes...but of course, that's subjective. :p

Ladies...
I do own a Kelly and it was very easy to purchase. I walked right into Hermes on Worth Avenue and at the time spent approx. $ 4500 with taxes. It is a true, classic gem and everything about it screams gorgeous. BUT...I swear I carry this bag like it is my child. I fear it being scratched, stolen, and whatever else. I really shouldn't be that way.
IF and I say IF you have the money and you are not placing yourself in debt, then I say it is a great purchase. It will be with you forever. It is also the bag of choice that many Parisian women purchase to pass down to their daughter (s).
I don't think it is wise to buy anything that you truly can't afford. You realize that as you get more mature. You may still want that Hermes, but you see things differently in life.

Clanalois, I think that's a great plan too! When you have to save up for that Kelly/Birkin, you will truly treasure it!

Greentea, my bag was bought over a decade ago...it is a black, box leather Kelly, 28 cm with gold hardware. It was a purchase I made to use more as a career/professional bag and evening bag per say. I am very small 5' 1" and at the time 100lbs. (three kids later and over a decade...10 pounds heavier)
I felt the 28 cm was perfect for my size. I did not plan to jam it with things it was more to be ladylike and carry only what I needed. It has held up like you can't believe and I have not had any problem with scratches.
I always knew I would purchase a Birkin one day and then I would go with more of the rugged leather and palladium hardware. Actually, the Birkin would fit my lifestyle more now anyway. That is why the choice I make for the Birkin is so important. It will be my cherished bag I use all the time, where as my Kelly is now my "special time" only bag.
I sort of feel I will have the best of both worlds one day. One dressy classic bag and one casual rugged bag. I just hope I get me Birkin before I become an old lady. That time is coming quickly....so, when I figure out what I really want in my Birkin I need all my helpers out there to find it for me.
I don't want people to say, "nice bag, but beat up old lady".

Worth the wait if you can get the exact one (color/hardware) that you want. The Birkin is a little more user friendly than the Kelly because you can tuck in the flap and don't have to "undo" the top everytime you want to get into it.

Before I was "offered" mine I established myself with one sales rep and purchased a few scarves and bracelets as gifts from time to time to become recognizeable.

Good luck.
