Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

what color and hardware combo is it? What size? Get it...it'll be worth it! If all else fails, sell it!

Black, Size 42, Silver Hardware ! Sold some jewelery today that I never wear, so now have a third, can also raise the rest, just feel nervous and guilty, BUT I know it is an investment, and am awaiting some monies to come in the next couple of months, so could pay back my c card and account, dreadful, but so want to have it in my cupboard, and have created a nice little space for it

I Purchased my first kelly bag when I was 20 years old. It wasnt fashionable at the time (1990) but I could already see that it was one of the most elegant bags ever to be created. So with my savings and a little bit of help from my relatives, I got my dream bag. I had the privilege of being young, pretty and very elegant :) with my kelly that was rarely seen on others. It was more of an elderly lady's bag, but I wore it with jeans etc....Now in 2010, 20 years later, I have 10 bags (birkins and kellys). So that averages 1 handbag every 2 years.....and i havent purchased any other brand or style of handbag at all. I still dont know what is fashionable and what isn't with all the other brands. All I know is that now "everybody" wants a kelly and or Birkin. It used to be a bespoke bag but now it is a coveted status symbol...Sometimes i get saturated seeing these bags on every star or socialite ,not too mention all the fakes being worn around the world. For me though, I know i cant carry any other bag and I never will- not even when the world will be so fed up of them. They give me so much pleasure and I appreciate their fine craftsmanship and beautiful precious leathers. I actually predict that the craze will backfire and that they will be out of fashion because for the moment there is visual saturation. However when it will settle down, I will still be here with my birkins and kellys, until I grow old and wont be able to carry them and i will have to give them to my daughters and daughter in laws !!!!! Hopefully they would still want them :) Or othrwise they will end up being auctioned off with all my jewels and other belongings.....

Very nice post Her Mess, I enjoyed reading it.

Am I the only one who believes that the waiting list is a marketing ploy? Theres been times I've gone to the boutique and asked for a certain birkin and it was brought out for me..

The waiting list is of course a marketing ploy! where I live the "list" is just nonsense, if you have a good relation with a SA you get the bag and so on.. I always got exactly the bag I wanted in no time, and I know a few ladies who had to wait forever.. in Paris you can walk in, get a bag if there is one, I have an "inside" relation here in my city to the store, and it often depends of the store manager,I do think this way to do business is extremely unfair.

I also believe that they have some SA that get bags as they come in. Then if they don't have a buyer it would go to the next SA. I received "the call" on Mon, I told SA let me ask hubby and will call you back. An hour later she called back saying other SA have buyers for the bag.... Basically fill or kill. Hubby said yes and now I have my first birkin.

Congrats Finmichelle on your first birkin. I hope it will be the first of many. You're right about having a good SA that's on the lookout for you. And it is fill or kill. I've regretted several times when I've gotten a call and turned it down, but later, I find that I really do want it after all and too late. It's rare to walk in and BAM there's a bag sitting on the shelf. A good SA can work miracles.

Hi NWK, anyway you can recommend me to your SA? which part of the world are you at? i hope you are in europe. Wanting to get a birkin 35 toga for mum's birthday..

Korzinka hi, the MOD has already suggested a few other threads discussing similar topics. One the availability varies greatly from country to country, region to region. Some operate fill or kill, some do operate lists. It also depends on what leather, colour, HW combo one is after. If it's a common combo, there is a great chance one maybe available at some locations for walk-in customers. If it's a rare combo, chances are you do need to go through some form of list. Call it a game or whatever, that's how H operates. By law, as a company, they don't have any obligation to sell any product to anybody. Again, this has been discussed relentlessly here on the forum.

I know it is a marketing ploy. I think that if something is out of reach (fake or real) it makes people want it more. Also, the higher the price tag of an item, people want it more. Nowadays, price doesn't equal quality. Besides, you see many people carrying Hermes now especially ordinary people. I don't think it is much of the status symbol as it use to be. Once the masses own Hermes bags, it is not so exclusive anymore.
