Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

i personally am not too crazy about the birkin ( i know everyone's jaws dropped haha). I mean, its nice but i dont see myself EVER spending that much money on a bag. Its classic- but i like very unique bags that stand out. I feel like the birkin is "unique" only because its rare and symobizes high status only because society has made it into a high status bag. If it didn't have the name of Hermes, I feel like you wouldn't be able to pick it out from the other plain bags at a store like tj maxx. i know im definitely in the minority for this opinion lol.

I'm sorry but if you can't tell the difference in quality between TJ Maxx bag and a Birkin, I highly suggest you to stick with TJ Maxx. Not being a snob or anything but your statement doesn't make much sense....

I was going to say the same thing. I don't want to sound patronising either but if ehy210 couldn't tell the difference between Hermes and TJ Maxx, I doubt very much she has seen the real thing in real life. Because to me, the difference is like a gulf! Otherwise, one may as well stick with TJ Maxx, no point wasting money there, is it!

This thread just popped up I guess from who knows where. The OP is sofa'ed. If we've said it before, we'll say it a hundred times. If you have to ask the question, you don't get it. There are those of us who crave the feel of a luscious leather that was made in the same way it was made over the decades, nearly a century for some bags. The fact that Hermes has stayed in business is, not so much due to the fact that posers want to have one, too, but because real Hermes lovers know how long it takes to handcraft an Hermes bag of any sort, but especially a Kelly or Birkin. So much care and love goes into the crafting of each piece that comes out of an Hermes workroom. So if you don't get it, don't get it.

Well said BBL...

Gotta blame the Kardashians and the Montags...

I have ordered one and I keep having second thoughts, mostly because of the price. On the other hand, I know it would make me very happy to have it!
Trust me.. Its worth every penny. =) You are going to love your bag. Just to stare at it in your closet.. you will be happy. Especially if thats your 1st purchase of H bag. ;)

Here's some complex :-) philosophy for you: it's only worth it if it is worth it to YOU. No one can or should be able to change your mind about this--we are talking the holy grail of bags. Maybe more innocuous subjects (caviar, jeans styles--skinny or slouchy, short hair or long...)have greater range in which opinions can be formed. But for the big guns like politics, women's rights, Chanel suits and Birkins-- it's all about you babe, and if you can't decide or you don't know, you may not be ready.

How about you go back and read my post again. I never said anything about quality. Im not an idiot. I know Hermes is wayy better quality than any bag at TJ maxx. I know its takes days to make a single bag and that they don't make too many also. I said I personally didn't like the look of the bag. Its a nice classic bag but its not everyone's style. i've seen it in real life a couple times and Im not a fan. Just because the whole world likes it doesn't mean I have to. And it doesn't mean you need to be rude because I'm expressing my own opinion. And no, I dont buy bags from TJ Maxx just because I dont like the birkin.

I totally agree with you!

Well in that case, can you enlighten us in what way you feel like you wouldn't be able to pick the difference between a Birkin and a TJ Maxx bag?

I'm not ehy210 but if this is what she means, I probably agree with it: the design of an Hermes birkin is really not all that special. Quality-wise, the leather and craftsmanship is superb, if you go by the experiences that most on this forum have had, but the design of the Birkin doesn't make my heart race and it's not the last thing I think about before sleep, nor is it the first thing I think about when I wake. So perhaps, if you look at a Birkin from far and you didn't know that it was HERMES, you wouldn't take a second look at it.

And even in quality, Hermes does fail to measure up sometimes. My first Hermes purchase was a Bouganvillea (sp?) Kelly wallet and within 6 months of use, my credit cards were all stained red. I've never had this happen with ANY wallet before, not even PVC wallets. I had a hard time getting cards out because they were stuck all the time so in this regard, I think that any general wallet from TJ Maxx would surpass the Kelly wallet that I had.

The worst part was when I brought the wallet back to Hermes and they told me that it was impossible for the wallet to have done this. But it's pretty hard to argue when I can produce cards stained the exact shade of red as my wallet so after more than 6 months of "sending it back to Paris and trying to see what was wrong", they finally said that there was no way of fixing it (i.e. they had no idea what was wrong) and refunded me the money (which was considerably less since the exchange rate had dropped significantly since I bought the wallet).

I'm not saying that ALL Hermes products are defective. And neither am I saying that all Hermes bags are uninteresting to me. I just just bought a Medor 29cm clutch like two seconds ago and my heart simply sings thinking about it. Not even the thought of extra expensive international shipping and taxes can break through my haze of contentment. But everyone has his/her perspective and others might think that the Medor is really ugly and paying almost US$5,000.00 for a clutch is just plain crazy.

I've never posted in the Hermes forum before; I've only lurked. But I appreciate reading threads with both sides of the argument because sometimes, I almost lose perspective and think about jumping on the Birkin bandwagon. Then I read this thread and my shoulder just aches from thinking about the weight. And any impetus to try my luck at getting a Birkin dissipates like a vampire in sunlight (unless you're a Twilight vampire; then you just sparkle...) It's also nice to see how happy fellow posters are with their bags and how in love they are with the Birkin/Kelly/whatever Hermes bag(s) they own.

for those who are not handbag fanatics, they have no idea what the hermes birkin is. And when I first saw it on TPF and in real life, I wasn't impressed. Yes, it has a very classic look that will never go out of style. But it's simply just a rectangle. The look is nothing special. If you picked out any normal person on the street, they probably wouldn't know that bag is worth so much because it doesn't stand out unless you know that its a birkin and know the status that comes with the bag. Of course to everyone on TPF would know the difference between a bag from TJ Maxx and an Hermes birkin. But to everyone else, they wouldn't know. But, the chances that they can point out a LV or a Chanel would probably be higher because it stands out more and its a lot more common. You only see a birkin ever so often. And i personally dont think it's worth the price.

To each their own - to me Birkin is not just a 'rectangle', but the design of the bag is timeless, and again, I am sure even your average Joe can pick out the difference between design from a Birkin and a TJ Maxx when put side to side. And is it worth the money? Heck yeah.
And the beauty of Birkin or any Hermes items in general is, they are not meant to stand out or meant to be a mobile advertising for the brands like some other brands do.
