Well in that case, can you enlighten us in what way you feel like you wouldn't be able to pick the difference between a Birkin and a TJ Maxx bag?
I'm not ehy210 but if this is what she means, I probably agree with it: the design of an Hermes birkin is really not all that special. Quality-wise, the leather and craftsmanship is superb, if you go by the experiences that most on this forum have had, but the design of the Birkin doesn't make my heart race and it's not the last thing I think about before sleep, nor is it the first thing I think about when I wake. So perhaps, if you look at a Birkin from far and you didn't know that it was HERMES, you wouldn't take a second look at it.
And even in quality, Hermes does fail to measure up sometimes. My first Hermes purchase was a Bouganvillea (sp?) Kelly wallet and within 6 months of use, my credit cards were all stained red. I've never had this happen with ANY wallet before, not even PVC wallets. I had a hard time getting cards out because they were stuck all the time so in this regard, I think that any general wallet from TJ Maxx would surpass the Kelly wallet that I had.
The worst part was when I brought the wallet back to Hermes and they told me that it was impossible for the wallet to have done this. But it's pretty hard to argue when I can produce cards stained the exact shade of red as my wallet so after more than 6 months of "sending it back to Paris and trying to see what was wrong", they finally said that there was no way of fixing it (i.e. they had no idea what was wrong) and refunded me the money (which was considerably less since the exchange rate had dropped significantly since I bought the wallet).
I'm not saying that ALL Hermes products are defective. And neither am I saying that all Hermes bags are uninteresting to me. I just just bought a Medor 29cm clutch like two seconds ago and my heart simply sings thinking about it. Not even the thought of extra expensive international shipping and taxes can break through my haze of contentment. But everyone has his/her perspective and others might think that the Medor is really ugly and paying almost US$5,000.00 for a clutch is just plain crazy.
I've never posted in the Hermes forum before; I've only lurked. But I appreciate reading threads with both sides of the argument because sometimes, I almost lose perspective and think about jumping on the Birkin bandwagon. Then I read this thread and my shoulder just aches from thinking about the weight. And any impetus to try my luck at getting a Birkin dissipates like a vampire in sunlight (unless you're a Twilight vampire; then you just sparkle...) It's also nice to see how happy fellow posters are with their bags and how in love they are with the Birkin/Kelly/whatever Hermes bag(s) they own.
