Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

To each their own - to me Birkin is not just a 'rectangle', but the design of the bag is timeless, and again, I am sure even your average Joe can pick out the difference between design from a Birkin and a TJ Maxx when put side to side. And is it worth the money? Heck yeah.
And the beauty of Birkin or any Hermes items in general is, they are not meant to stand out or meant to be a mobile advertising for the brands like some other brands do.

Well said! I def didn't buy birkins because the design "stands out". I bought them because I love the design being simple and classic. The top quality material and superb craftsmanship. Anybody can't see that doesn't need to waste their money on them. I also don't buy them so somebody else can "pick it out". I buy them for my own pleasure!

How about you go back and read my post again. I never said anything about quality. Im not an idiot. I know Hermes is wayy better quality than any bag at TJ maxx. I know its takes days to make a single bag and that they don't make too many also. I said I personally didn't like the look of the bag. Its a nice classic bag but its not everyone's style. i've seen it in real life a couple times and Im not a fan. Just because the whole world likes it doesn't mean I have to. And it doesn't mean you need to be rude because I'm expressing my own opinion. And no, I dont buy bags from TJ Maxx just because I dont like the birkin.

Fair enough, and of course you are fully entitled to your opinion. But let's be honest: When you come into an Hermes forum and post that you don't care for one of the iconic styles of the brand, you're trying to be provocative, so don't feign hurt feelings when people take exception to your comments.

Although I can see both side of the argument (I am a Birkin lover and recently finally gotten my first one, yay!!), I do have to say that I would only spend time in a particular designer forum only if I really like the stuff. For me, I love Hermes and Chanel, so...I spend most of my time in these two forums

But yeah, I do agree that to some, a Birkin does not "stand out" and therefore "isn't worth that much money"...but I appreciate the fine leather and craftsmanship and the timelessness of it, I simply do not care if people recognize it or not - it is for me to enjoy and cherish!

Wow. I just read through this thread again. I still don't know who the Montags or Kardashians are and how they drive the Birkin business. Some people have deep down disdain for others who save for one good decent Hermes leather item. When I started with a Lindy and then a Kelly I thought I was happy. I didn't like a Birkin. Finally, I started really looked at the and was able to get pried away. I don't not like a Birkin anymore.
I actually found it quite practical and beautiful.
I made the obvious step from the evelyne that I had been carrying to next step which was my first birkin. It was the bag that was at the right place at the right beautiful.
If you don't like it, then, please do not buy it it. If you don't get it, then DON'T GET IT.

What I meant was Birkin used to be 'less well known' compared to now, I mean these days you see every celebrity to have at least one, they're pretty much everywhere. My comment about Kardashian was mainly because I tend to associate (well at least used to associate) Hermes products, be it Kelly or Birkin to be carried by more graceful and elegant celebrities (eg. Grace Kelly herself), but now they are more like items for C list, D list reality TV stars (eg. the before-mentioned Kardashian) which I personally find unappealing (the celebs, not the bags).

But then again, I'm just saying as in association of Birkin with the celebrities. As an item for our own personal uses, they are of couse still graceful as long as you yourself are

You must understand that you came into this thread and made comments that might sound off-putting to some people. If you don't like the Birkin, or Hermes in general that is your opinion and you are absolutely entitled to it. The Hermes ladies and gents are very welcoming and always ready to give advice and help (even to newbies like you who ask the same questions over and over again). You need to know that when you make inflammatory comments like these you may get responses that you aren't prepared for.

When you go into Hermes you need to ask if they have any Birkin bags in back. They often have some but never put them on the floor. if you are ready to buy and serious, they will show you. It is the most fabulous bag and has its very own storage box complete with "pillow" for it to rest properly!!

I don't have problem at all when a person says he/she doesn't like a Birkin. Heck I am not the owner of the company. The thing is, I knew you're trying to provoke with your initial post comparing Birkin with TJ Maxx (either that or you're just very bitter about it). You said that you wouldn't be able to tell a Birkin apart from TJ Maxx bags, you really serious about that? Birkin and Kelly are among the most elegant bags available, and if you seriously can't tell the beauty in their designs compared to TJ Maxx bags, I really have nothing to say.

I love my Birkins as much as oxygen. Yes, they are totally worth it..but it's been said thousands if not millions of times..they are heavy..that's something you must consider..if that is no concern to you and you have the resources GET IT!

I don't want to carry a birkin myself ( I don't think I have the "looks") but I want my mom to own one. She deserves it. I don't see how the birkin is not outstanding. I feel that the reason why I would get my mom a birkin is not because of the status symbol (that comes with it...) but ultimate point is, there is no denial that hermes makes really beautiful leather goods. even the wallets. my mom has just gotten herself a bearn and I can tell you, comparing it with chanel wallets, hermes wins all the way through. even the zipper is beautiful. can you believe it?

a birkin is like a human being. you only truly love it, if you can see the beauty within it.
