Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

wow.. wonderful thread! I am thinking of getting a birkin for a while, but I just can't justify for the price ($8350/birkin 30cm) I work full time and do have savings to purchase the birkin, but I don't think my husband and my family will appreciate that I spend so much for one bag!!! Still dreaming!

Yes, and yes. When you have Hermes, you do not need anything else not Hermes
and your investment gains in value. My first Birkin I have bought for around 4000, now they are 9.450 in my currency and area. This is good argument to use for husbands.

Could someone explain the waitlist process, etc? If I were to walk into the Madison store and they had a bag I liked, I could probably just get it, right? But let's say they don't. How do I get on a waitlist? How do they decide when they call me? Do I pay for it now or when it arrives?

How much would it be for a black regular leather birkin with gold hardware, normal size? 30 or maybe a little smaller?

my sister in US actually said u must buy a couple of things in hermes and show ur face ard the boutique for awhile... and then the SA kinda update u on the birkins they have. My sister is kinda called upon by hermes for the newest birkin they have in stock, they kinda appreciate more on returning customers rather than one time buy kinda buyer... so prepare ur wallets to shop there and keep returning to same branch of hermes boutique.

i have wanted a birkin for the longest time, but got too caught up in my chanel pieces. anyways, i walked into SF hermes about 3 months ago and asked about a waitlist. they said they didn't have a one. i figured since i was there, i would get a wallet to match my birkin if i ever got my hands on one. long story short, i have bought tons of wallets, about 7 or so, keychains, bangles, and card holders in the past 3 months. now i also own 2 birkins.

so yes, you have to be an established customer but most importantly, IMO, you have to have a good relationship with your SA. she called me for my first birkin about 1.5 months ago. and about 3 weeks ago she called again with another birkin for me. hopefully she'll call me soon again.

definitely worth the money!!

I just want to ask because I know that there's a waiting list for Hermes Birkin/Kelly. A couple of days ago, I went to Holt Renfrew here in Calgary and I saw like 4pcs. of either Birkin/Kelly (really can't tell the difference yet). One is being shown on a woman who's planning to buy one and the sales lady had to put on gloves to show it to her.

I'm just wondering if there's no more waiting list for these bags or did I see something else? But it really looks like a Birkin/Kelly!

^ As far as I know, anything on display is available for purchase by anyone. If you want a specific leather/size/color and it's not avialable, they can put your name down and contact you when they get what you are looking for.

Just to be clear though, you can buy anything they have on display or whatever they show you from their backroom.

I quit work a few years ago and now a full time mom.. I've been in and out of love with Birkin but lately with frequent price increase in Chanel (my first ) I think maybe it is the right time to cross over but to think again, will it suits my lifestyle? :thinkin:

I am so in love with the Birkin, and have one on hold, and must pay for it in a couple of weeks. Still trying to work a way around to get it, and feel awful that such a large amount would go to a nice family holiday too. Might try to sell my other designer bags on E Bay

what color and hardware combo is it? What size? Get it...it'll be worth it! If all else fails, sell it!

I Purchased my first kelly bag when I was 20 years old. It wasnt fashionable at the time (1990) but I could already see that it was one of the most elegant bags ever to be created. So with my savings and a little bit of help from my relatives, I got my dream bag. I had the privilege of being young, pretty and very elegant :) with my kelly that was rarely seen on others. It was more of an elderly lady's bag, but I wore it with jeans etc....Now in 2010, 20 years later, I have 10 bags (birkins and kellys). So that averages 1 handbag every 2 years.....and i havent purchased any other brand or style of handbag at all. I still dont know what is fashionable and what isn't with all the other brands. All I know is that now "everybody" wants a kelly and or Birkin. It used to be a bespoke bag but now it is a coveted status symbol...Sometimes i get saturated seeing these bags on every star or socialite ,not too mention all the fakes being worn around the world. For me though, I know i cant carry any other bag and I never will- not even when the world will be so fed up of them. They give me so much pleasure and I appreciate their fine craftsmanship and beautiful precious leathers. I actually predict that the craze will backfire and that they will be out of fashion because for the moment there is visual saturation. However when it will settle down, I will still be here with my birkins and kellys, until I grow old and wont be able to carry them and i will have to give them to my daughters and daughter in laws !!!!! Hopefully they would still want them :) Or othrwise they will end up being auctioned off with all my jewels and other belongings.....

I paid a little something more and got my 2 Bees from resellers (1 from friend and one from Lecrin Ginza). If I ever develop a new appetite for Bee, I will once more turn towards Japan resellers. This way I get what I want and I don't have to wait. And I don't turn the SAs to Hulk.
