Is anyone else tired of the Chanel Bag trend?

I switched to H last year and will probably only buy H bags for the following years given its better quality. I still love my Chanels and I’m surprised that I’m fine with it being “trendy” since now I can use it without worrying about “looks” on me since it’s indeed becoming ubiquitous. (I live in an area with lots of luxury rental buildings in NYC)

The social media is constantly learning your interests and recommending things that they believe will attract your attention. If I try search “Prada” and click into many Prada pictures or leave comments under Prada posts, I’ll be flushed with Prada posts and have the impression of “Prada” being ubiquitous on the internet lol.

Not at all trendy. Still very much classic. Now seeing more Gucci, ysl, dior, Goyard regularly, so I think those are trendy. And I live in a very wealthy city. Chanel prices have become out of reach for many, which is I think what Chanel wants. More exclusively. Still see Chanel at our high end mall but much less than the other brands. I would say I see H and Chanel at about the same frequency now.

Honestly I've never craved for any of the trendier brands like YSL or Gucci. But after 10+ years of some of my Chanel flaps, the spark and joy are very much still there. They are just so beautiful and classic, and more functional than a B or K. Love using them!

Interesting.. I feel the Chanel CF trend in my area has toned down. I rarely see new techies carrying Chanel CF anymore. It was really popular 4-5 years ago. When I visited SoCal, I would see more Chanel bags carried by ladies in the higher end malls like Woodland Hills. In my area, there's more LV, Gucci and YSL.

To be honest, Chanel CF is a mature, lady-like and formal looking handbag, just like the Lady Dior. With the athletic-leisure wear trend, I don't see many rocking these types of bags.

I've always felt Chanel CF was oversaturated and I'm not too fond of the brand these days. I like some of the RTW, but I'm not forking out that kind of money unless I was a size 4 which I am NOT!

I live in a major mid-Atlantic City and I rarely see Chanel. Actually I rarely see any designer handbags but when I do it’s goyard or lv. Virtually none of my friends (and I’m gen x) have designer bags. I live in a wealthy town and hardly ever see gen x or baby boomers buying h or Chanel at my local boutiques. The clients are mostly gen z and millennials. The only place I’m bombarded with luxury is on social media due to algos which lately I keep trying to tell I’m not interested. It’s interesting to me so many millennials and gen z post Chanel and now more than ever H given the price points on these bags. While Chanel bags are approaching h bag prices the actual spend at h is significantly higher. I appreciate seeing Chanel and h bags in the wild. What I don’t love is the level of flexing on social media with so many things luxury. It makes bags less desirable to me and it’s not reality.

I thought Gen Z and millennials were about experiences and not material goods.

I live in a (relatively) large city in the Netherlands and I don't see a lot of people wearing Chanel bags. Actually, I rarely see a Chanel bag and I'm glad; I feel it should be something special to wear a Chanel bag. I wear mine only a few times a year on special occasions.

I'm also wondering: if you see a lot of (young) people with Chanel bags, are all those bags authentic or are a lot counterfeits?

All the Chanel bags I own are vintage, most of them are from the 90's. In my opinion those bags will always be special and look great, even if 'everybody' is wearing Chanel bags, because they really look different than new (less than 10 years old) Chanel bags.

In NYC I see mostly Prada reissue, LV, Gucci, YSL, Goyard St. Louis. Chanel and Hermes I only really see when in specific areas like Soho and UES. In soho I typically don’t see people carrying classic flaps, more often see other styles! I feel like a lot of the time business affinity, 19s, and coco handles. Also, noticed when I’m at nicer restaurants a lot of chanel flaps and Kelly / birkins to be spotted (Hermes Kelly’s and birkins are aspirational bags for me haha)

In Chicago there are quite a few Chanels in the wild. And the wealthier burbs. Years ago I saw a couple of teenage girls shopping together at a Neiman's in the burbs. One had a silver jumbo and her girlfriend (I don't remember what bag she was wearing) slapped out a credit card to buy a jumbo she'd looked at momentarily on a shelf. I figured she just wanted the bag to be like her buddy and whipped out Daddy's credit card to buy it.

Granted, there's a lot of serious $$ around here, but there's also a helluva lot of Keeping Up With The Joneses too. Some of the uber uber wealthy people I know or know of wear non designer bags or maybe a Coach, but have multiple homes and travel internationally routinely.

It’s the same where I live the rich rich don’t carry h or Chanel or any of these high end designer brands. They typically carry no name brands. I read somewhere that these high end designers don’t actually target the rich rich but mainly those who are aspirational and/or want to keep up with certain appearances.

but who is buying haute couture from these brands if not the truly wealthy?

Just bc brands target the aspirational or those that want to appear wealthy does not mean that the rich rich don’t buy. But Rtw is not the bulk of revenue and luxury companies cannot survive alone on catering to the rich rich. Think about who really buys Chanel makeup, Fragrances, bags, fashion jewelry and shoes and accessories etc. there are so many ways for the masses to experience luxury at entry level points. Hermes is also trying to get into that game with now it’s nail polish and lipsticks. there are many articles about how luxury has been changing to survive. It’s smart marketing in their part. The unfortunate side is that once these brands suck people in there are many who likely can’t afford some of the items and will throw themselves into debt just to keep up with appearances.
