Is anyone else tired of the Chanel Bag trend?

It’s fun to read this thread. My 17yo daughter has expressed an interest in being gifted a designer bag for her 18th birthday (18 is the ‘coming of adult age’ birthday here). It made me think about what I myself wanted to signal with my designer bag choices. I do NOT want to be wearing what high school girls wear? Or has the horse bolted now thanks to social media and unless I’m into Hermes (I’m not) it will be a matter of dressing as lamb in my favourite designer brands now?? :hrmm:

Can’t recommend Céline enough, although mine are all old Céline. In particular the classic bag in medium. Also consider the Fendi peekaboo as that’s a beauty and the by the way bags. Valextra and Delvaux are very nice and watch out for Phoebe Philo’s launch possibly next month.

How about the Dior Lady bag? It's beautiful, classy, classic and in a class all by itself. This bag will ALWAYS be around.:tup:

I‘m not really tired of the bags but rather of the brand. The constant anti-consumer moves are just annoying. I mean good for them, it makes a lot of financial sense to behave like this. But to me the brand is just about price increases now which I honestly find a bit grating.

Also I will always fight against the idea of it being too ubiquitous. This is an expensive item and being able to afford it shows a degree of privilege a vast majority of people do not have. Social Media gives us the impression that everyone has a Chanel when in reality most don’t and never will.
I’m glad I took frequent social media breaks

Thank you for your recommendations. I have one Celine which I enjoy - the quality is amazing - and I am willing to go further with the brand. It is a little low-fi in comparison to what I have been drawn to in the past but perhaps that is what’s next for me!

I live in NYC and I honestly barely ever see Chanel's. Maybe we tend to notice bags we carry? I have seen like two Celine nano's and maybe that's because it's my bag of choice. I feel like 90% of people though neither carry nor know of luxury brands. The idea of a $5000+ bag being everywhere is puzzling to me When most Americans don't even have $1,000 in savings.

I definitely don't agree with the sentiment that luxury is everywhere either.

I will also note that I'm not active on social media so that may sway my perspective. I also distinctly spend my time in Midtown as that's where I live. Perhaps in the more affluent Manhattan neighborhoods, everyone and their grandmother is carrying a Chanel?
So true. I moved to the DC area from nyc after almost two decades and see even less Chanel here (expectedly) and didn’t see much of it in NYC to begin with.

I just looked backed here and I'm wondering why this post was deleted? Does Purse Forum do that? Delete post after a certain amount of time? Because it was critical of Chanel? Totally surprised and disappointed.

what post are you referring to? On my end, it looks like all of our replies are here including your original post:smile:

Long time DC person here and you’re definitely right. DC is a very work bag place M-F business hours. Great but practical totes and what not, but come evenings out or weekends you see a few a more designer bags, to include Chanel. (getting that store in city centre may impact seeing more over time) That definitely depends on the area and/or event on if you even really see premium designer bags.

And per the work bag comment-you never know what bag is inside the longchamp hahaha

I think I am probably over the brand too. It's bound to happen, interest will wane eventually. I don't think seeing them around too much has caused me annoyance. I don't see any in my north London surburb much. If I go to central London it's a different story. I actually have found love for my boy bag especially with the bag itself losing its cool girl following. Means that I am probably very untrendy by Instagram standards . For me that is great. Ultimately the bags r a pretty way to carry my stuff. Some still spark joy (I am with those who now regard their caviar with gold as a little boring-not used mine in 2.5yrs) and so I will use them. Probably won't sell any because I am unwilling to buy again at the current price. Just in case the obssession is reignited. Having said that, I am unwilling to purchase any bags so I may just have lost interest in bags in general.

I have a really nice old medium Boy in lambskin, beige that I'm thinking about selling for a Lady Dior ABC in small in lambskin and I hope to get it in a beige. I have had my Boy since 2020 and maybe brought it out 5 times. It is just a little too small, yet due to the shape of the Lady bag, it will hold more eventhough it is a small. I just hope I don't have any regrets selling the Boy. I'm like you, I will DEFINITELY NOT repurchase at the higher price when it's the SAME EXACT BAG! I'm going to try Fashionphile. Hopefully they do not low ball me.

I live in a major mid-Atlantic City and I rarely see Chanel. Actually I rarely see any designer handbags but when I do it’s goyard or lv. Virtually none of my friends (and I’m gen x) have designer bags. I live in a wealthy town and hardly ever see gen x or baby boomers buying h or Chanel at my local boutiques. The clients are mostly gen z and millennials. The only place I’m bombarded with luxury is on social media due to algos which lately I keep trying to tell I’m not interested. It’s interesting to me so many millennials and gen z post Chanel and now more than ever H given the price points on these bags. While Chanel bags are approaching h bag prices the actual spend at h is significantly higher. I appreciate seeing Chanel and h bags in the wild. What I don’t love is the level of flexing on social media with so many things luxury. It makes bags less desirable to me and it’s not reality.

That is super smart! I need to train my social media that I’m not interested either. And I like how you put it…the “flexing” on social media. It totally takes away from the brand and experience of buying luxury.

I live in a mid-size German city with no Chanel/LV/etc. store located in the city itself. I don‘t see much Designer bags in general and if I see some it‘s LV mostly. In the last 5 years since I got into Designer bags I have seen two Chanel bags! One coco handle and one square mini

... I can underline that - also live in a mid-size German city with no big designer stores around. I almost never see a Chanel bag, but notice the looks I get when wearing mine (also my husband notices that ; - ))) I bought mine last year after saving some money meant for travelling - but thanks to Corona I now have a beautiful bag ...
