Is anyone else tired of the Chanel Bag trend?

Your comment inspired me to ask my daughter about Chanel and today’s youth. She said some young adults don’t like Chanel because it’s too “in your face”, but some others think it’s cool to be young and carry a bag their grandmas wear.
Most of my daughter’s friends have graduated from the middle school LV Palm Springs mini and Speedy, to high school Chanel bags (from their moms). My daughter’s friends who are not able to inherit (or be gifted) a Chanel bag or clothing, work minimum wage jobs and shop at H&M, so they can save for a Chanel.
Makes sense! I hope they enjoy the bags, I also hope they grow into appreciating them for more than the logo!

I currently live in a mid-sized Canadian city and I never, literally never have seen one Chanel. I find it unusual though because it's a somewhat wealthy city and every time I go out I do see luxury brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada specifically.

I only see the Chanel saturation on social media as well, and only ever hear about how they're ubiquitous.

One reason I like vintage though is to buy slightly different designs that no longer exist, that's one way to differentiate from the crowd if you live in an area where the newer designs are everywhere.

I agree that it depends on where you live and where you go. I live in California. In the town I live in now and in the surrounding towns, I mostly see LV, Gucci, and MK, and that’s the same with the area I work in. I’ve only seen one Chanel bag out in the wild in my town. Now in the area where I grew up which is about a half hour away, I rarely see any kind of designer bags, and if I do it’s usually contemporary. I’ve only seen on Chanel bag out there and that was recent. Now, there’s this mall I recently discovered that’s about a half hour away. This mall has stores you usually see in a mall on the second floor like H&M, Hot Topic, etc. The first floor has all the high end and contemporary boutiques. This is where I see a lot of Chanel and LV bags despite this mall only having a Chanel boutique that only sells perfume and make up. It’s usually the classic flap and boy bag that I see. Usually in the medium and mini size. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a jumbo or maxi out there. If you were just visiting California and went to this mall, you would be under the impression that everyone in California has a classic flap or boy bag, and that just isn’t the case.

I agree with what papertiger said about mostly seeing it on young girls and hoping that they appreciate the bag instead of just being influenced by social media and wanting to be trendy. It does seem that luxury has become trendy and that it isn’t necessarily appreciated. I will admit that this does kind of make it easier for people like me to get a bag I’ve been wanting on the resell market and have the option to make monthly payments. I will gladly make monthly payments on an unappreciated Chanel I’ve been wanting and give it the TLC it deserves.

I am Austrian who lives in a tiny town, Works in Vienna and currently lives part Time in Frankfurt. The only times i See Chanel is in the 1st district („Graben“) of Vienna and on Occasion in Frankfurt. I used to be an investment Advisor and private Banker in Vienna and Even then i Never saw any Chanel (or Hermes for that matter) bags on my (wealthy) clients. LV maybe or Gucci. So, i am Lucky enough to be say Chanel and H feel very Fresh here :)

In Asia (I’m from Singapore so I can only speak for Asia as many places I travel to are also in Asia), more and more super fakes are circulating the market. Therefore, I feel that this can also be the reason why it may seem like Chanel (as well as Hermes and LV) are everywhere. I think social media and the algorithm has made luxury bags seem like a “everybody owns one” to the younger generation (particularly Gen Z) - with celebrities and popular influencers (ugh I hate this group) carrying them in every picture. Older groups (like millennials, of which I am) sometimes feel the same or feel that they too need to own them if people younger than them can afford it (not knowing even if it’s authentic, simply giving in to the inferiority complex). This has caused the fake market to explode by capitalizing on this mindset of people these days who want to seem like they are “cool” as well to own what their favourite celebrities own. Fakes has always been around but with social media and advancement of the internet, making super fakes has become much easier since there are so many pictures of authentic goods now and also years of making fakes has upgraded their skills in making the smallest detail look real (like even how the caviar grains look and feel). I often see post in popular China social media RED about fake VS real and the fakes look so so real I cannot even tell from the photos anymore. Honestly, to me at least, one of the worse things that advanced is social media. It has evolved and become rooted in people, especially youngsters, that they get their self worth from it by comparing with people they shouldn’t be comparing with. Young ones these days are offended by everything and tries to cancel everything because they are so fragile yet opinionated - they can only dish it but can’t take a criticism, but that’s another topic for another place. The only reason I have RED in my phone is because they have news and stock photos of upcoming collection way ahead of official launch (thanks to super rich in China who get the information early and are eager to flaunt their exclusivity and VIP status) so I can inform my SA early if I have something I want. I don’t even have tiktok in my phone despite it seemingly being the huge thing now.

Social Media gives us the impression that everyone has a Chanel when in reality most don’t and never will.
100% !!! Statements like "everyone has [some luxury item]" sound kind of out of touch with reality. Like my ex who told me 'everyone' in his country has a housekeeper. I asked him if his housekeeper had a housekeeper too. He had no response.

Sorry off topic, but I'm so jealous. I used to live in Vienna and miss it terribly. Back on topic, when I lived there I wasn't into luxury so I can't remember how many Chanels and other luxury brands were to be seen. I was wondering this so you answered my own question, thank you!

I see Chanel bags in the wild periodically. I’ve seen two Gabrielle bags in four years and a handful of classic flaps. The wealthy high school girls in my city carry Chanel—mostly Boy bags or small CF. Their PTSA moms and other women (at the mall/Whole Foods/Trader Joe’s) carry Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and Hermès (B, K and Evelyne) bags. After reading some of the posts on this thread, I think social media has made most Chanel bags trendy. I used to think owning a Chanel bag was special. Decades ago, if a person owned one, two or three Chanel bags, they were special. Now I look at social media and see people with twenty or thirty Chanel bags, and I think—that’s great for them, but for me, it’s too many. I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone that owns twenty or more Chanel bags.:flowers:

That's so interesting that it's the young girls that you see carrying the Chanel bags, and the women that you see carrying Tory Burch, and Kate Spade. You would think it would be the other way around. It makes sense that it's the women you see carrying the Hermes bags.

I get what you mean about Chanel feeling less special and more trendy. The trend will fizzle out soon, and those who truly appreciate and enjoy Chanel bags will continue to do so. For me, I'm over the moon to have a Chanel clutch, even if it is preloved. I do want a boy bag, but would most likely stop there.

I live in NYC and I honestly barely ever see Chanel's. Maybe we tend to notice bags we carry? I have seen like two Celine nano's and maybe that's because it's my bag of choice. I feel like 90% of people though neither carry nor know of luxury brands. The idea of a $5000+ bag being everywhere is puzzling to me When most Americans don't even have $1,000 in savings.

I definitely don't agree with the sentiment that luxury is everywhere either.

I will also note that I'm not active on social media so that may sway my perspective. I also distinctly spend my time in Midtown as that's where I live. Perhaps in the more affluent Manhattan neighborhoods, everyone and their grandmother is carrying a Chanel?
Oo this is interesting. I live in nyc, and when I go to the subway (4 blocks walk), I'll see about 2-4 ppl wearing chanel on my way to the station or on the platform. I only started noticing after I was trying to get a bag for myself and then realised more people were carrying chanel than I had thought. Its a big city though
