I know many others have commented on this already but was just going to chime in because it's been consuming my energies the past week or so. I've found myself tracking things on the Johns Hopkins site every day because it's interesting to watch the numbers fluctuate; my husband and I are both on the prepper side of the spectrum which is due partly to his ex-Mormon upbringing (when he was a teen they had to stockpile 2 years worth of goods per church doctrine) and my own proclivity towards emergency management. When I was little, growing up in the Midwest meant that every spring you get a nice deluge of tornado watches, which to me meant make a go-bag out of your little backpack and put some cat and dog food in there plus snacks for yourself and extra socks and take all your stuffed animals down to the basement if a warning hits. So I was prepared, but my parents would always laugh at me about it, which was infuriating but didn't douse my burgeoning prepper spirit.
Anyway, seeing as how my 79yo mother lives with us, we are taking some extra precautions and being really careful about exposing ourselves unnecessarily to risk since she herself is high-risk. We did the Costco run a couple weeks ago for extra staples, and I did one on Monday for toilet paper and Clorox, alcohol wipes and water; I felt a bit of a fool about it, but my logic is basically if I can keep myself from being exposed to the unwashed teeming masses at Costco or elsewhere if s*** really hits the fan, I run less of a risk of transmitting anything back to her when I come home. Plus all that toilet paper will get used eventually and we have the space for it in the basement (so long as my stuffed animals have a place to go... okay wait that was 30 years ago).
We tend a bit on the paranoid side of things when it comes to governmental advisories and "don't panic, everything's fine" when first-person anecdotes from healthcare workers are saying the exact opposite. So I say whatever you're doing to prepare in advance of this is a good idea. Sources are saying the fatality rate is 3x higher than the flu, so I am not taking any chances with my elderly mother. My stubborn elderly father who lives alone and doesn't practice good hygiene and is a heavy smoker and has been losing weight inexplicably... well, there's only so much I can really control at this point. But thanks for letting me prattle on about this topic as it's been pretty interesting to me, to say the least.
Thanks for sharing this V
