Holy. That's horrible...I never heard of that $79.99 policy, either, and I would be APPALLED if that happened to me. Glad you got your $ back, and I will definitely be more weary if and when I shop there again!!

Liz-
Which Marshalls was this? I'm curious if it was a smaller store where $80 would make an impact on their daily numbers? This happened to me once, when I tried to return a dress to Marshalls in Torrance that I bought from South Coast Plaza. I was going to SCP the following weekend anyway, so I didn't argue with them.

I used to work at a cosmetics counter while in college. The pressures the stores are under to make certain numbers are crazy. Not that it makes what happened to you right. I hope you got the name of the manager and write a letter to Corporate!

I would think they would have to state that. If I were you I would have stayed in that store and made such a scene that they would have paid me to leave. I would have been on the phone IN THE STORE, AT THE SERVICE DESK, in front of the manager, talking with corporate, regional people, WHOEVER and I would be bringing up the better business bureaus and customer pricing laws and all that **** about pricing because if it is not posted they CANNOT enforce it. I also would probably start informing very loudly that anyone in the store that intends to spend $79 better carefulyl think before they buy because this store will not take it back.

You didn't know you couldn't take it back and it wasn't posted in the store or on the receipt.

That is TERRIBLE business and I would have been that customer that had the whole store in a tizzy because of it.

Wow, how awful. I buy very little at Marshall's because I never seem to find anything good. I buy lots at TJ Maxx, though, and have never had a problem. I've had to return several things, and the only issue has been if I'm returning something that is defective, they want it returned to the store it was purchased from. They told me that they'll take it if it's sellable, but if it has to be damaged out, then it hurts their numbers. A tad inconvenient, but I had no problem with it.

This is one reason I love Costco -- they will take back anything, no questions asked. Almost everything in the store is returnable up to one year, used or not.

I had a similar experience with marshall. I bought a pair of hudson jean at clearnace price $36.
The next day I went there to return it. An employee said he had to check with his manager for the return as $36 was too expensive for a pair of jeans.
The manager also said that $36 was too high just for a pair of jeans and that he had never seen a brand "hudson". After waiting 30 mins for the manager to call and find out that they indeed had a hudson at $79.99, I was able to return it.

With tjmaxx, I was one time accused of steaing a wallet when I was putting my cell phone in my tote bag. It was a very unpleasant and humiliating experience, but a District Service Manager stepped into the case on the very first day it happened (probably because I was about to contact a lawyer?).

He treated the case properly. He immediately admitted mistakes from the store manager and securities, called me at home and work several times to apologize and give me update how the case was handled (they fired securites), wrote a letter, asked me to stop by their main office and to have a 30min meeting with their team about customer service problems, offered me $300 gift card with 10% off coupon.

But after these two unpleasant incidents, I shop tjmaxx and marshall less often and buy only cheap stuffs (like under $20).

Wow, this stuff blows me away. TJ Maxx has always been pleasant to me. Even when I bought a Cole Haan bag that was clearance priced to $100. Three days later, I went in and they had two more of the same bag marked down to $70. I had the receipt with me, but not the bag. I went up and asked, I was buying a second one for my DD, and they gave me the $30 credit for the first one I bought. They were really nice about it, too. Last February, they had a 25% off clearance prices. I had bought a bunch of jewelry in the two weeks prior to the sale, at three different locations. One of the salespeople in a different location let me bring it all in, she returned it and let me rebuy everything to get the extra 25% off.

I'm so sorry you all have had such bad experiences.

Wow, I do this all of the time, answer my phone and put it back in my bag. This could have been an ugly lawsuit right there. I'm glad they tried to compensate you somewhat, but the humiliation and the shame would take a long time to live down. I'm sorry that happened to you.

RIDICULOUS! I too had a similar situation happen to me. My mom purchased these Prada shoes in the runway section of her TJMaxx in Chicago for me and she shipped them out hoping I would love them. Since I live in Charlotte, NC and they didn't work for me I took them to return. They would not accept it saying that they would never sell an item for that much $$$ they were like $200 shoes. I was furious. Not only did I have to ship them back, but they gave my mom a hassle when she wanted to return them back to the original store she purchased from. I too stick to NR, Off 5th, etc.

You should write a letter to their Corporate office detailing the difficulty that you had return merchandise that you had a receipt for within the return period. Their behavior was unprofessional, disorganized, and just plain stupid.

ITA - no retail giant, whether standard or discount, wants that kind of rudeness and disorganization marring their reputation. Twice I've had incidents that provoked me to write to the corporate office (too long of stories to get into now...) and both times I received phone calls with personal apologies from corporate execs. One store (CVS pharmacy) also sent me a bunch of coupons.

Plus, you'll just feel better if you vent to the store's higher-up's!

These stories are really interesting. I've seen a real decline in customer service in the past 10 years. I'm so sorry all that cr*p happened. The Marshalls and TJMaxx here are always so dirty and unorganized, I don't bother going.

Being in retail, I see lots of customers pulling scams, so I can understand tightening up the the return policy. There has to be a written policy that is clear to understand. If the store is not honoring their own policy, I would file a BBB complaint as well as talk to the district manager. Oh, and BTW, I have seen the same items for different prices at different stores. An item at TJMaxx or Marshalls is priced based on when it came to the store. Happens all the time.

At another forum I read that Saks is no longer accepting returns on cosmetics that are opened. I would never, ever think to return cosmetics...except for a quality or defect problem. If the color is wrong, well caveat emptor. I mentioned this to an SA at Nordies Bellevue and she said they have an average of 600 cosmetic returns per week. That blew me away.
