I had just bought something at a Marshalls and when I walked out the door 15 feet from the counter the beepers went off.I turned around and asked them to take the sensor off and they asked me if I had paid for it!! They were really rude to me like I hade stolen something I had paid for 20 seconds earlier.I did write to corporate and they sent me a 10 % off coupon,an apology and a phone call from the manager asking me who it was that treated me like a thief.I would recomend at least contacting them, even if it just makes you feel better.

Your experience is very unfortunate. I've shopped at T.J.Maxx for proabably 2 decades and have never had a problem on a return of any amount. However, I'm not a Marshalls shopper although I know that it's the same company as T.J.Maxx.

You need to send a letter and SOON to the corporate office and with names of the people you dealt with and the days and times you dealt with them. If I'm having any kind of problem, with a store etc, I document EVERYTHING in a journal.

You should write a letter to their Corporate office detailing the difficulty that you had return merchandise that you had a receipt for within the return period. Their behavior was unprofessional, disorganized, and just plain stupid.

I haven't shopped at those stores in years, but it really makes you appreciate Nordstrom for their generous return policy. I returned something recently that I had for three months with my receipt plus obviously, it was never used.... the SA was so nice and credited the amount back to my credit card but then later apologized to me saying that she should have asked if I wanted cash instead.... I was surprised but the credit back to my credit card was perfectly acceptable to me. What great service Nordstrom has.... It's hard to shop elsewhere with stores that have crazy return policies, or have SAs who do not know what they are doing.

Please write the letter to Corporate as soon as possible while everything that happened to you is still fresh in your mind.

Sorry that you had such a bad experience!

That is awful! I agree with you on nordstroms they are topnoch. i have had the best experiences there

I was just at a Marshall's and someone was wanting to return a pair of shoes (with the tags on and receipt). They told him that since they didn't carry that particular shoe, they wouldn't do the return--that he had to go to the location he made the purchase from. They are going to lose customers if they continue with these insane impromptu policies.

Wow, what crazy policies. I don't shop at Marshall's because I never seem to find anything, but I am hooked on TJ Maxx. The only time I had to return to the same store I bought something at was for a pair of shoes. They had a rope sole that had started to come undone. They told me that because they had to be written off as damaged, it needed to go back to the same store as purchased. They didn't want it to come off of their sales. Even though I think that's bogus, I have never had any other issues with them, and they have always been extremely nice.

I think its crazy for them to say we can't accept that return because we don't carry it. Isn't Marshalls like TJ MAxx (in Canada we have Winners) so its like it or miss? Don't all the stores carry different selection as well? To me, its still the same damn company and they should return it regardless of where it was bought! If they say we don't carry that item, just tell them now you do!

Winners has a 10-day return policy i believe. I once bought a pair of True Religion's and Diesel jeans and they turned out to be fakes. Luckily, i got my money back hassle-free but everytime i go in there, i always hear arguements at the returns.

No matter what their policy, you should not have been treated this way. To tell you to come back and then not have the manager there as promised is just poor customer service. I have returned things to Marshalls before and never had a problem, tho I usually go to the same store. Are you sure the policy is not on your receipt?

Similar issue in a TJM, I was with someone who has purchased a Marc Jacobs jacket at a TJM in another nearby state, but she decided not to keep it. All the tags were attached and she had the receipt too, it was just a few days since she bought it. She decided to return it to a different TJM, and at first they said they couldn't take it back. They told us to bring it back to the original TJM that it was purchased from, but we didn't take no for an answer, and they took it back.

We really don't shop there much anymore. We had the tags attached and the receipt, we did nothing wrong, yet it became a hassle. Can't be bothered with TJM anymore.

Wow, a lot of these stories and policies are completely unacceptable. I've never had a problem returning anything to Marshall's, although I've always returned NWT and receipt. Unfortunately, a lot of high end stores have dreadful customer service and return policies, too. But if Marshall's/TJX is having this many cutomer complaints, I think they need to train their employees better. Store policy doesn't appear to be the problem; cocky SA's who think they can twist the return policy into anything that suits them are.

Sorry to sound like a neophyte, but Winners sells fakes? Even in their Runway section? I would have thought that since it's illegal for a store to sell fakes, a company as big as Winners would make sure to toe the line! Sorry to hear about your experience, but glad you got your $ back.

Yes, I've had problems w Winners returns, where despite the fact that I bought the item in a certain condition, I was (falsely) accused by the SA of causing the damage. So now, before buying anything I might want to later return, I always ask the SA to note any specific damage or wear on the sales receipt itself, to avoid hassles at the return counter.

I am in retail and I empathize with the plight of the chain SA. Customers are NOT always right, they just think they are. :-) Nor are they always wrong!

i agree but i took a business class and the teacher said that the customer is always right and should be right as long as what they want or need is not illegal, unethical or immoral.
