out of curiosity what were you returning? one pair? more than one? different sizes? it could be they thought you were reselling and returning items that did not sell on ebay. i think there are stores that have policies against that.

Never was a fan of Marshalls. I think they rubbed me the wrong way when I needed to use the bathroom and they didn't let me. lol Oh yea, and when they lost customer's credit card info to hackers.

The reason they often do that is because people switch tags on designer items all the time. They probably saw that the style numbers on the tags were incorrect (didn't match the department). Sometimes the employees even do this so they can buy the item later with their discount. I used to work at a TJ Maxx and they were very specific that we should look for switched tags, style numbers, and clearance stickers that had been moved to a non-clearance item. People try to scam all the time so that is probably the reason they went back to check, and saw that the bags were tagged like that.

I agree 100% but there were two bags with the same tag, why would this lady change the tags on both bags? Also, this happened to me once, I got this really nice sweater and it was marked at 25 dlls, when I was at the register I saw a girl with the same exact one with a 4.99 tag, I told the cashier, heeyyyy I wanna pay 4.99 too. she told me sometimes peple do change the tags and they dont say anything, it is so unfair.
You should write a letter to their Corporate office detailing the difficulty that you had return merchandise that you had a receipt for within the return period. Their behavior was unprofessional, disorganized, and just plain stupid.

ITA, do so ASAP! But I also think is not the store but the costumer service the store has. I've heard horrible stories of people trying to return merchandise to Macys,Nordstrom, etc.

I am sorry this happened to you. The manager is so unprofessional, he/she should've waited for you when you said you were coming to the store the first time and not make you do five trips to take care of your problem.

I'm not saying it was the customer, but quite possibly, the employees. Switch the tags on all the same style of bags, so there will be one left at the end of their shift for them to get a steal on, and they will see that all the other bags like that have the same price, and think that is the correct one. I've seen it happen before.

Regardless, it sucks, and bad customer service anywhere is a problem. A few bad apples ruin it for everyone.

I used to work at Macy's and get annoyed at some customers for returns they made...I was set straight by my manager...the customer is always (almost) right. For every one sale that someone might pull one over on us, there are thousands more that will come back and shop more because of our customer service. I agree with this philosophy to this day. Shame on Marshalls'...and I DO shop there.

I'd file a complaint online with the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org). I did this when I had a huge problem with Overstock.com a few years ago. I bought a set of 6 DVDs for about $8 each but returned them. They said I had to pay a restocking fee of $4.95 for each DVD -- so I would only be refunded about $3 for each DVD. I got ALL my money back credited to my CC after I filed the report. And Overstock no longer has that policy. It might be worth a try!

I haven't shopped at those stores in years, but it really makes you appreciate Nordstrom for their generous return policy. I returned something recently that I had for three months with my receipt plus obviously, it was never used.... the SA was so nice and credited the amount back to my credit card but then later apologized to me saying that she should have asked if I wanted cash instead.... I was surprised but the credit back to my credit card was perfectly acceptable to me. What great service Nordstrom has.... It's hard to shop elsewhere with stores that have crazy return policies, or have SAs who do not know what they are doing.

Please write the letter to Corporate as soon as possible while everything that happened to you is still fresh in your mind.

Sorry that you had such a bad experience!

I agree, I cannot believe they put you through all this.

Wow. I love to shop Marshall's and TJMaxx because their prices are unbeatable for designer items. It's a shame you had to go through all that. Where I live I've never heard of such a return policy. I do think stores are tightening up their return policies in general because of consumer abuse.
I agree. I love to shop Marshalls for my daughter...I get her Seven for All Mankind Jeans and cute Ralph Lauren clothing...I never heard of such a return policy.........Rock is right! people abuse so badly...I haven seen people return heavily worn shoes and washed clothing..Good Luck next time....

A friend of mine works at Marshalls - I asked her about this and she said that they are told not take back expensive items purchased at another store because it affects the sales numbers. Corporate runs reports on each store for sales/returns, etc. So if you buy something at store A they get credit for the sale and then return it to store B - store B's sales number will go down since they have the negative from the return. She thinks the regional managers pay is related to where their stores rank on the list of sales figures and returns, etc so there is a lot of pressure from higher up to make sure the sales figures are increased. She said that they usually tell you to return it to the original store and the manager will say the same thing. But if the customer is persistent (like you were) then the manager will usually give in since its not worth the hassle of arguing with you.

I would definitely report it to corporate. There is no excuse for the way you were treated. I haven't shopped at any of the TJX brands since my account info was hacked...and I probably won't go back there because of that
