I'm currently on a ban after buying a LV, Chanel and vintage Coach back-to-back a couple months ago (all preloved WAY off retail). They were purchased after emerging from five years of hell due to kidney failure, advanced breast cancer, loss of job, ginormous blood clot and finally Stage 4 kidney disease. All that sent me spiraling down into depression that I never thought I'd get out of. When things started FINALLY looking up, I bought the bags to feel somewhat human again.

Believe it or not, they did help tremendously. It's hard to explain, but I feel like I'm living life again instead of being down in a pit. A kind of freedom, I guess.

However, I did grapple with major guilt for a while because at 46, this is the first time I've ever owned more than one bag at a time. I struggled as I didn't really need the other three bags, but I wanted them ... and my wants won out. I'd wanted an LV and Chanel for YEARS but never thought I'd have them. When I had the chance, I jumped on it. Being so close to death multiple times made me realize how precious life is and sometimes you have to ENJOY it ... as long as you keep things in perspective and don't go overboard. I paid cash for all of them.

Hence the ban now.

There's one more vintage Coach bag I'd like to have eventually, but if I don't get it that's OK. My collection is perfectly fine for my needs, and now that I have my LV and Chanel, the desire to own more is gone. I still enjoy looking, but the urge to buy isn't there.

I'm going on ban after the Burberry Spring sale. Just this year alone I've bought 2 LV, 1 Burberry (my favourite brand) and 2 Gucci's.

I'm starting to wonder when I'll even use them. I love them but I think it's time for me to scale back. I'm going to try and stay on ban until Christmas, that way hubby will have a few gift ideas for me.

Good luck everyone!

Ya know another way to maybe help with a ban is to accessorize the bags you already have, thus making an old bag new and still satisfying that urge to shop but without hurting your wallet. I was browsing through the forums yesterday looking at bag charms and wow, they can really change the look or add some personality! In fact I don't remember what thread I was reading this morning but one gal had a teddy bear on her LV Speedy (if you're reading this, it was super cute!) which kept it classy but gave it a fun look too. I have a couple LV charms I usually only use on my Mon-Monogram but I'm sure I could throw one on one of my denim bags and really give it a pop of color. eBay also has a huge selection and they're super cheap! Just a thought!

I've seen some really cute accessorized bags on here, but personally I prefer to keep mine understated and accessory free. That way they don't attract attention. The satisfaction of carrying a high-end bag is for me only. I don't want anyone else to know.

I think what really helps me is knowing I now have an LV and Chanel. I'm not interested in Hermes bags (I did buy a vintage rare scarf on eBay a while back at an unbelievable price), so the Chanel especially is it for me. How could I top it? I can't. So the urge to buy more is gone.

I know how you feel. I don't have a Chanel, I did want one but I'm starting to wonder when I'll use all of these bags? I think that's what is killing my urge. I love them, but if I won't use them the "thrill" is going away.

That being said, I don't think I'll be on ban forever. I'm pretty sure once I get the use out of my items, I'll start buying again :smile1:

I totalled up the money I spent on bags in the past few years and realised I could buy two small cars with it.
No more new bags for me! Also I need to sell/give away/donate some of my bags. On a positive note, I am absolutely definitely bags content right now :heart my BVs: :)

Joining in, as I need the support. I declared after buying my fifth bag this year (bought 4 Pradas and 1 Furla between end of Feb and end of April) that I would go on a bag ban - just to break it a few weeks later, by buying a BV and a Bal (bought the two a few days apart, mind you). UGH! I really want to be strong, but I always end up searching online or visiting the boutiques (I live downtown and am practically walking distance to all the high-end boutiques in our city), and when I find something that's a good deal or might be discontinued, I end up buying it and violating my bag ban! I suppose the solution would be not to look right - but then I always have this thought at the back of my mind - what if I miss out on a great deal that will never be back? Right now, I already declared myself on a bag ban, but I am STILL considering getting a Longchamp Planetes since I heard it's getting discontinued - and I saw that it's still available on Bloomingdales online.

So - should I really just stop looking period, or is it okay to violate your ban for bags that are getting discontinued and/or really amazing deals?

I can totally relate! lol

Good luck on your ban!

In the long run... avoiding temptation... usually backfires... :p

But... in the short run... the feeling of success (even through simply avoiding temptation), helps some ban island residents, cement their resolve. ;)

As for what's worth breaking a ban for... here are a few questions to consider: Is this discontinued bag or amazing deal... worth failing my resolve? Is it worth the opportunity cost... for something else I want or am saving for? Is it amazingly better than something... I already have and enjoy?

With that being said... there are some bags... worth breaking a ban for... but I'd wager that most bags... are not.

Good luck on your ban! :smile1:

Great points! Your "guide questions" will probably help me a lot. Thanks for wishing me luck, by the way - I will need it! I am going to try my best to stick to my ban this time!!

Been on a bag ban since 2011. Really want a Valentino bag to match my shoes but too many bags, went overboard so feeling guilty so cannot buy a bag. My husband lets me buy what. I want but I stop myself voluntarily.
Shouldn' t have bought too many. bal bags. But the forum is not good. So I dont read up on anybody's purchases anymore and just stare at mine and that. Constantly reminds me that, I shouldn't have been addicted and be influenced into buying. More and mote and more.
Feel guilty.

Hi, I´m Pimpie, and I´m on a ban :-p

I´m 90% bag-and-SLG content and have just two "wants" (Chloè Paraty wallet in Nutmeg and Chloè Marcie satchel in Holly Berry, both possibly preloved) and only one "need" (a long LV strap to use my Trevi PM crossbody).

I could actually go and buy it all brand new at once (and more, if I wish), which is precisely why I´m drawing the line NOW until the end of the year, minimum. Because I want my bag indulgence to remain a long-anticipated and special treat, and not become an almost joyless routine thing.

Here´s to perseverance with your resolve, ladies!

Can I join until fall? ^^

I already bought two bags this year and one of them still needs to be payed off. For the next bag I want to save up the amount in full and I want to wait until at least fall. :)

In the meantime I am trying to find a medium sized bag I REALLY like and rather save up for that instead of buying two affordable Mini bags ;)

What makes it hard for me is a site that allows you to pay in installments. It is tempting to think I can afford another small rate a month, but really I'd feel more comfortable just quickly paying it off.
