Scarves How to Wear a 90cm Carre/Silk Twill Casually?

Papertiger -thanks for that link to the other thread! I will read it cover-to-cover tonight in bed with my iPad when I have more time. But help me out! In what ways do you just "chuck" one on. Do you have any pics for us to look at?

I'm starting to think there are two groups of scarifies - those that are born with some gene and employ the old "chuck it on" or "wad and throw" (like Calexandre) and those that need to be more deliberate about scarf tying. I guess I am in the latter group. :shrugs:

SO glad you started this thread, MYH! I have to admit I've been in the "No more 90s" camp for a while. It just feels like my 70s and GMs fit my casual wardrobe better. But I'm hoping to be re-inspired by this thread!

Two thoughts: one is, when I do wear my 90s, it's usually cowboy style, as the bias-fold-with-scarf-ring feels too formal or conservative. Second, I really have to remember to use them as belts more often!

I think the sling cowboy is the way to go. I am reposting a pic of The Bachelorette wearing her H. She's 28 and this was filmed in CA so should work for this thread?

I've tried that look, but I always feel like I'm wearing a bib :s
Maybe that works because the scarf is monochromatic and matches her top?

I've been enjoying this thread - I only ever wear my scarves casually as my life almost never involves formality. I usually do either a bow (fold on the bias, tie in front with a bow) or the wrap-twice-and-tie, either with a scarf clip or without. (You might find scarf clips or slides in wood help to make your scarves look more casual - I love the ones Mai Tai sells on her website but similar others exist). I also agree that that are easier to tie casually once washed, they are softer and more lovable.

I've attached a silly photo of me in my L'Arbre de Vie and a crocheted Boba Fett hat (he is a Star Wars character) to show that I feel Hermes scarves go with anything!

Digressing but my older son would die if he saw that hat. I have a boba fett skirt I bought to wear last Halloween to match his costume.

On topic, I have begun to love the combo of casual clothes and formal scarf. I didn't get a picture but today wore olive jeans, long sleeve blue t shirt, black Chucks-like sneakers and Mythiques Phoenix noir/neutral colorway in the asymmetric fold. It's a very formal tie (and one that doesn't stay put) but looked great with the laid back outfit

Great topic, I also read through the other thread that was posted above. I found myself thinking the same thing as I sat at home with my first 90cm purchased in the Spring reading dozens of posts online trying to sort out what I was going to do with it.

I wear the loose cowboy the most often with all my scarves, knotted behind my neck in 90cm. I also love the bandeau for the hair but I do it reversed so you can see the knot at the front. I especially think this is cool with contrast hems because you can really see them. My avatar shows another head scarf look with my 55cm bandana, you have to do some creative folding with a 90 to do this way. Great for messy/bad hair days as shown in the photo. :smile1:

I dress very simply, solid tees, denim, chambray, white or black button downs and I think the scarves give a polish without trying too hard. I do think that sometimes I see ladies wearing scarves and it looks like it's wearing them.

As my collection grows and I add 140cms, I do find those easier to wear now that it's cooler but there is something so amazing about the variety and detail to the designs in the 90cm format to me they are like collecting art as well as a fun accessory.

MrsOwen- you have a knack for wearing scarves in your hair. When I try this, I look like I am getting ready to do spring cleaning at home or a wannabe gangsta. Trust me, I've tried. But it looks great on you. I'm jealous!

Thank you so much for posting this silly picture of you. The old wrap around twice is one I employ in the winter but in thr summer, I find it too hot!

First OP, thank you so much for starting this thread. I have the very same problem - I live in Southern California, dress very casually most of the time and have these scarves that I do not/cannot feel comfortable wearing casually. So thank you!!!!

Melora, for me I think you completely figured out my problem. I always feel like the scarves are too old me for - I love them but them almost feel "starchy". I think you are right - if I get them cleaned and they relax I will feel better about wearing them more casually and in more ways - as a belt, headband, regular scarf. I think you turned a light bulb on in my head.

Scarf1, the only scarf I go to over and over again is my 70cm, precisely because it is so soft. Now, I have a plan - get my others cleaned, make the softer and I have saved what I thought would be a failed purchase. I still bought them but I always felt they were so stiff. Thank you!

Can't wait to see what other TPFers show for casual wear. Again, OP, great thread!

StylemeChanel - no need to thank me for starting the thread. I just thought it was a problem many of us had and am so happy there have been so many responses and suggestions. I think Melora has really sparked an idea in all of us. Many of us do like the soft hand of 70cms so why not try to make our 90cms similar? To wash silk, I use a detergent by The Laundress made specifically for silks.

I love this sentiment from Calexandre. I agree! I just throw on either a 90 or 70 and go and I wear denim and a J. Crew Jackie cardigan nearly every day.:smile1:
Sailor stripes - can you expound by what you mean by "throw on"?

No need to thank me! I'd like to thank everyone for responding and contributing to this thread. I'm also a fan of cowboy but wonder if anyone has any unusual variations of it.

I think the sling cowboy is the way to go. I am reposting a pic of The Bachelorette wearing her H. She's 28 and this was filmed in CA so should work for this thread?

Seton - you're back! I haven't seen you around on the H threads recently. I was worried about you and hope everything is going all right with you and your family. I like cowboy but unless I make the triangle part hanging down in front in the smallish side, I agree with Melora. It kind of feels like a bib on me. I think it's because I'm not a 6 ft tall glamazon. Sadly, I'm only 5'5".

Yes, I think unless I can grow 7 inches, I have to keep the triangle part in front on the smallish side.

Birdonce, I would love to see this outfit. Can you take a pic and post it the next time to wear it this way? Is asymmetric fold the one that starts off by folding the carre into a rectangle and ends up kind of looking like cowboy knot?

MYH,
From my experience, I feel like most of us have trouble "adapting" or incorporating H scarves with our normal outfits because we often think of H scarves as a brand new genre of clothing. It's most likely because we were taught by our SAs how to knot in certain ways, or we follow the way MaiTai blogs showcase scarf knots. The ways MaiTai wears her scarves are often elegant, but for me, it's a bit too sophisticated, too well-done. As you try to perfect your knots, you may forget that at the end of the day, H scarf is just another scarf. I don't know about you, but I don't have 5 minutes in the morning to perfect my bias folds nor to even slide in a chaine d'ancre ring and do fancy things. I dash out of the door as soon as I can and I often wear scarves without a ring, like any other woman I see on the streets.

Try looking at the photos of you from pre-H era, how did you wear your scarves back then? Was that a carefree stole draping on your shoulder? Was that an infinity scarf? I would try to mimic the way you used to tie your non-H scarves with H scarves. Don't learn new ways to wear, just try to wear it how you used to, and then be creative with variations each time.

One tip is that I find that I look more matronly when I knot in bias and show the two scarf tails. Perhaps because I'm a petite girl and I have a short torso. I switched to wearing in half-bow knot, infinity knot, regular ascot, etc. Anything so that the two tails of the scarf don't reach my belt.

Another thing I just can't stress enough: you do NOT have to fold a scarf in perfectly symmetrical bias folds. Fold it off center or whatever you can just by folding it on your upper leg when you stand up on the other leg. It gets easier and you will get the scarf wearing and scarf fixing habit.
And yes, it's true, soft scarves are often my go-to scarves, while brand new ones get pickled and stared at and then back to the orange box.

Bottomline:
- I don't use scarf rings often
- My knots don't have to be symmetrical
- I don't show two long tails of the scarf in front of me. They often get tied in the back of my head.
- Do fancy knots only when you have time. Really. Great scarves tie themselves, you don't have to work it.

P/S the above points are regarding 90cm only. I still show the two tails with GM shawls.

I was just trying to think of a way to describe how I tie my scarves casually. Then I saw your post! The 'sling cowboy' is my go to casual style. I, well , sling it on, and go!

Thank you for making me smile!

LOL, I just saw this :hugs:

As you know I often have to get up so early as to get dressed in the dark and that certainly makes things look more casual :p

How funny- I thought I was the only one who dresses in the dark.:D we installed a large hallway mirror so I can catch the worst offenders as I leave the house....

Great thread!!
I like to wear my scarves as belts ( with jeans) and a t shirt or even as a halter top in the Summer ( tube top underneath)....
Looking effortlessly chic certainly requires a lot if effort...!!!
Ladies, you all look beautiful and wear your pieces well.

MYH, re. the cowboy knot and the volume of the 90s: I don't know what the proper name of the knot is, but I do my 90s in what I'll call a "refined cowboy:" I pull the triangle part closer to my neck, cross the corners behind my neck, bring them back to the front and tie the knot in the front. The knot can then lay on top of the triangle or can be tucked underneath it, depending on what you want to show. I find it's less bib-like that way.

Great post! I agree, you have to be careful with scarf rings because they can look either matronly or as you very nicely put it, too sophisticated. Lately, unless I am wearing the scarf as a belt, my scarf rings have been sitting in their boxes, unfortunately.

Sorry in advance for what I'm going to say, you're my silk friend, and I love you as the sister in PdO you'll be next season ( :p ), but... this is the most stupid thing I read on this forum ;) I don't think there is such a thing as "dressy" or "casual" H scarf!
It all depends on how you knot them, and what you wear them with.

I normally don't post much but I think MYH was just expressing her opinion and no opinion deserves to be told "stupid" :hbeat:

Ahh...ok good suggestion. Wash my scarves so they are more fluid and drapey! OK, got it.

Melora - you made me laugh out loud with this post. Well, I'm glad you told me I am being totally ridiculous with my dressy and casual scarf classification. That's what I need to hear! I totally see a difference in the same knot with cosmos and raconte. My scarves are headed to the washing bin!

I'm glad all us Silky Sisters are laughing. Melora, your "stupid" made me burst out laughing since I know you didn't mean to be rude.

MYH, your look is always Fabulous my dear. You are having difficult with the texture contrast no doubt, but linen pants, a nice T, or one from Gap, and a silk 90 is the BEST to me. :hugs:
