Scarves How to Wear a 90cm Carre/Silk Twill Casually?

OK, I should be going instead of answering to this thread, but I can't resist ;)
I had this issue for years, and didn't wear my scarves because I felt old with them. Until I got Point d'orgue, and wore it everyday… Then I took out all my other scarves, cleaned them, and got into the habit of wearing a scarf almost everyday. Usually with a t-shirt, since I was working from home.
I got another scarf for my birthday. And… it feels weird, it makes me feel like a grandma again.

So… my advice is to wash the scarf and remove the "apprêt" (I can't find the right translation): the thing that is in the scarf, and that makes it almost solid, and hard to bent.
Once your silk is soft, and flowing, it's easier to knot and to wear casually, imo ;)

And if you still don't feel good with your scarves, just give them to me, I'll make good use of them ;) (wouldn't mind having de la mer au ciel or ex-libris en kimono !)
I would like your pavements! or kimonos!

I live in Northern Calif, and frankly it has been too hot lately for much scarf wearing.

However, my standard outfit is a solid color tshirt (I don't think the brand matters), pants and a cardigan sweater. I happen to like bright colors, but most of my tees and pants are boring neutrals- navy, black , grey. I like the extra oomph a scarf gives to the outfit.
I know when I was first wearing scarves, I did not feel very confident, and worried about getting it tied "just right". Now I don't worry about that so much, and just feel happy wearing the scarves.
You can get ideas for new scarf ties on the scarf of the day thread and the Fall 2014 threads, etc.

I do think it is easier to tie the softer scarves. I know this was about wearing your 90s, but
I have also bought a few 70s as I think they are really easy to wear and the vintage silk is already soft, and come in some fun designs like ballet aquatique, bal masque, les parisiennes.

Agree that how you tie the scarf can make a difference

For 90s I like to do the bias fold and then twist them a few times and then tie whatever knot I'm using. It thins the scarf out a bit around your neck so it's not as puffy. I think it looks less formal that way.

I'm actually wearing a t-shirt with my scarf today. I buy pretty much all my tees from Everlane, but I have a few from Uniqlo, and Anthropologie (before their quality took a nosedive). I think it's a matter of what knot you do - I tend to do a variation on the cowboy knot, or sometimes I do the classic bias knot but I flip the tail behind my neck so you just have the loop of fabric in the front. This works best with a casual jacket on top. That's the knot I did in my first pic with Laboratoire du Temps. I made the classic knot work with Au Coeur de la Vie because it's a bright design and I paired it with the utility jacket. The other 2 pics are a cowboy knot, which is also what I'm wearing today...

I have a harder time making the look work with the classic, horse-y designs, but you have a lot of cool designs in your collection that should work. I bet your De la Mer au Ciel in a cowboy know with a white tee is dynamite - try it! ExLibris en Kimonos too - you have more fun designs than you think!

I pulled a few pics from the archive, when I was in Venice in May. I hope they're helpful

Great examples.

I just chuck them on

So here's my 90 cm scarf drawer collection. I decided to sort them quickly into two piles. No rhyme or reason to the decision. Just a gut feeling. I think I've found the first problem. I think most of my scarves are "dressy". The first pic is dressy and the second is casual. Is this how you would have sorted them too?

We have quite a few of the same/similar scarves, 3-4 of the scarves you've sorted as dressy I would say are more casual but I do think it's more about the way it's tied. CdC ExLeK and CsmC to me could easily be thrown-on against a t-shirt, sweater or casual dress.

Agreed-- both with the fact that sophieg looks amazing, and with the recommended strategy. I was just saying to a scarfie friend the other night that what made me fall back in love with my 90s was employing a strategy of "wad and throw." Seriously, I can't even be bothered folding on the bias anymore, and why would I, when a contrast hem shows more beautifully peeking out all over the place instead of just at the ends? Just toss those gorgeous scarves around your neck and take inspiration from the way in which they want to fall that day. Adjust a little, knot, and go. :)

Very interesting thread. It's so interesting seeing everyone's idea of casual outfits. There are quite a few scarf experts here so would love to see more photos. papertiger has quite the collection and we must get her on board...

LOL, I just saw this :hugs:

As you know I often have to get up so early as to get dressed in the dark and that certainly makes things look more casual :p

Here's today's outfit: DKNY t-shirt, levi's jeans, Bass shoes, and :
- brand new Cosmos, still stiff, big knot.
- "old" Raconte-moi le cheval, soft, casual. You can see that the knot is more relaxed, not overwhelming, and the silk goes even lower.

Let me know if you think this casual or dressy.
I remember your friendship knot challenge. You are like the goddess of friendship knot to me. ;) Can you please repost the tutorial on how you do it? Thanks!

Papertiger -thanks for that link to the other thread! I will read it cover-to-cover tonight in bed with my iPad when I have more time. But help me out! In what ways do you just "chuck" one on. Do you have any pics for us to look at?

I'm starting to think there are two groups of scarifies - those that are born with some gene and employ the old "chuck it on" or "wad and throw" (like Calexandre) and those that need to be more deliberate about scarf tying. I guess I am in the latter group. :shrugs:

I decided to try a knot that's a hybrid of Azalie and Crochetbella's suggestions. I twisted the scarf in the bias fold and then tied a knot. Interestingly, I got a round knot instead of a triangle one! I kind of like it. Then I proceeded with Azalie's short necklace look. Yay! A new way to wear my 90cms. Let's keep the suggestions coming!

Great topic, I also read through the other thread that was posted above. I found myself thinking the same thing as I sat at home with my first 90cm purchased in the Spring reading dozens of posts online trying to sort out what I was going to do with it.

I wear the loose cowboy the most often with all my scarves, knotted behind my neck in 90cm. I also love the bandeau for the hair but I do it reversed so you can see the knot at the front. I especially think this is cool with contrast hems because you can really see them. My avatar shows another head scarf look with my 55cm bandana, you have to do some creative folding with a 90 to do this way. Great for messy/bad hair days as shown in the photo. :smile1:

I dress very simply, solid tees, denim, chambray, white or black button downs and I think the scarves give a polish without trying too hard. I do think that sometimes I see ladies wearing scarves and it looks like it's wearing them.

As my collection grows and I add 140cms, I do find those easier to wear now that it's cooler but there is something so amazing about the variety and detail to the designs in the 90cm format to me they are like collecting art as well as a fun accessory.

I've been enjoying this thread - I only ever wear my scarves casually as my life almost never involves formality. I usually do either a bow (fold on the bias, tie in front with a bow) or the wrap-twice-and-tie, either with a scarf clip or without. (You might find scarf clips or slides in wood help to make your scarves look more casual - I love the ones Mai Tai sells on her website but similar others exist). I also agree that that are easier to tie casually once washed, they are softer and more lovable.

I've attached a silly photo of me in my L'Arbre de Vie and a crocheted Boba Fett hat (he is a Star Wars character) to show that I feel Hermes scarves go with anything!

First OP, thank you so much for starting this thread. I have the very same problem - I live in Southern California, dress very casually most of the time and have these scarves that I do not/cannot feel comfortable wearing casually. So thank you!!!!

Melora, for me I think you completely figured out my problem. I always feel like the scarves are too old me for - I love them but them almost feel "starchy". I think you are right - if I get them cleaned and they relax I will feel better about wearing them more casually and in more ways - as a belt, headband, regular scarf. I think you turned a light bulb on in my head.

Scarf1, the only scarf I go to over and over again is my 70cm, precisely because it is so soft. Now, I have a plan - get my others cleaned, make the softer and I have saved what I thought would be a failed purchase. I still bought them but I always felt they were so stiff. Thank you!

Can't wait to see what other TPFers show for casual wear. Again, OP, great thread!

I love this sentiment from Calexandre. I agree! I just throw on either a 90 or 70 and go and I wear denim and a J. Crew Jackie cardigan nearly every day.:smile1:
