Here is a bit of info about caring for your silver that might be helpful. Silver tarnish is a natural process that occurs on the surface of silver jewelry when it is exposed to air. Materials that stimulate silver tarnish are wood, felt, rubber bands, food items like eggs, onions etc. High humidity also hastens the silver tarnish process.

Storing you silver in Pacific Silvercloth is the very best way to keep your silver virtually tarnish-free. The cloth is actually embedded with particles of silver that catch the gases that would otherwise tarnish the silver articles inside. Authentic Pacific Silvercloth is always brown. Inexpensive PS jewelry pouches can be purchased at www.silverguard.com. Airtight polyethylene bags are another option for storage.

Polishing cloths are fine to use, but you don't need to buy them at Tiffany's. 3M's Tarni-Shield Silver Polish and Twinkle Silver Polish are the least abrasive of the commercial cleaners and widely available. Tarni-Shield seems to have a more effective tarnish barrier than Twinkle. Haggerty Silversmiths Spray Polish is good for fine work, filigree, intricate and hard to reach spots. Never use toothpaste to clean your silver.

Enjoy your silver and if you store it properly and use a recommended polish, you really won't need to take it to Tiffany's for cleaning!

I have the silver RTT heart tag necklace and it is slightly smudged around the edges of the pendant (just like getting out a silver spoon and rubbing it with your fingers so that its not shiny).

I have a polishing cloth for silver but it looks a bit abrasive and I don't want to cause micro scratches on the surface of the pendant where it is smudged/not shiny (its not tarnished at all).

What can you recommend? I was thinking a tissue with water might get off the smudges without scratching it but I think water speeds up the tarnishing and I don't know about tissues, I'm pretty sure its best to avoid paper with silver. TIA!

Edit: I am wanting to get the T&co polishing cloth but I can'tget there for a couple of weeks because It's quite a distance and I'm busy with school. Would a cloth for cleaning glasses (slightly furry)that comes in the case work or would the ray ban cloth work better or neither?

I would get the polishing cloth from Tiffany. A tissue will scratch the silver, trust me. Get a softer polishing cloth. I have one and it works great.. it's only about $10-$15 and will last you a few cleanings. Takes any tarnish, smudges, and light scratches right off!

You can use any polishing cloth made for silver on it. I have one that has two flaps; it's like two little clothes that are sewn together down the middle. The inner cloth has a polishing compound; it feels a little gritty. Use it first and then the outer cloth will buff it back to a shine.
Cleaning clothes like that are available at almost any jeweler; doesn't have to be Tiffany.

I got the silver polish (not the spray) and the cloth. I love them both! I recently cleaned my silver and it works great! The SA had recommended the liquid silver polish instead of the spray for me (she said that the spray is usually for the mesh and intricate designed jewelry). But either one I think would work great!

I just took some of the polish put a dab on a cotton cloth and rubbed it on the silver (I have a necklace). Washed it off with lukewarm water and then patted it dry. Then I take the silver polishing cloth and sit there polishing away until I am happy with how shiny it is haha... I definitely recommend the cloth/polish combination! Definitely saves on the money and its quite relaxing to just sit with your Tiffany jewelry while watching TV... shining and admiring away haha... Btw I got the non-spray polish for $5 and the large polishing cloth for $10 at Tiffanys (they also have a small cloth for $5 and the spray I believe is $15?)

Hi all,

Until very recently, I used to work at Tiffany & Co.'s Customer Service department in New York (I might go back, because I miss all the employee discounts!). Here's the breakdown:

Bracelets and pendants: $10
Necklaces (like the Heart Tag w/ oval links or the Tiffany Bead necklace): $15
Earrings: $5 per pair
Rings: $5 each

They also do something called a Steam Clean, which is always complimentary, but that is usually only for items that are slightly tarnished and dirty. Steam cleaning will not remove scratches. Pieces that are much more darkly tarnished will have to be professionally polished because the Steam Clean will only make the tarnish look chalky. Lest you think Tiffany charges just to take a cloth to it or dip it, we have actual people taking the items to a polishing wheel and buffing out all the fine scratches and tarnish. That's why it usually takes a couple of hours to process. If we're not busy, we can usually do an on-the-spot job, but that's pretty rare and depends on the workload.

The Tiffany cloths and polishing liquid are very good preventative measures you can take once your pieces are polished/steam cleaned at Tiffany & Co.

Hope this helps! I'm more than happy to answer any other questions about Tiffany silver. :)
