How much does it cost for hair nowadays?

We are on the same boat. It is all due to covid inflation, imho.
What do u think?

I can’t fathom how they make the prices.
It is just that 195 at a salon between a bagel shop and a diner seems steep.
I'm in Long Island(North Shore)....and for 30 years same Salon....I only get Highlights.& rinse..(no Dye) $110. ..Trim have long hair $25(every other month) blow out & style extra 40.00 after trim, or if I go only for Blow out & Style. I don't honestly know what she charges for new clients, but that being said I'm very happy with results & charges although no Champagne...which honestly I can live without. Compared to other prices I see here...I'm extremely happy with both the results(uses best products) & their professionalism.

Seattle, WA

Cut ~$270 + tip (simple long layers)
Color ~$250 + tip (single process)

I have been going to the same boutique for 24 years since I started at university. Back then, I think a cut was $85 + tip and I remember being so proud that I had a real “expensive” haircut and was finally grown up! It was my glow up day, suddenly everyone was so nice to me and falling over to help me and befriend me! So how could I ever leave this boutique?

I feel like price increases for cut and color are modest compared to the cost of living increase and comparable increases. I used to be able to get a takeout lunch for $6-7 and now it is $30 for the same thing.

yes, significantly more expensive, to the point where I would do a DIY ponytail chop for a few years
and home dye (until DH begged me to stop; apparently his OCD could not handle the uneven layers)

name brand salon 2023:
Haircut : starts at 300 (starts at 450 by owner)
highlights: starts at 300
single process: starts at 175
gloss: 75
blowdry: starts at 85 (package rate)

boutique salon, in 2008: haircut: 125
highlights and single process: 250 (as per my recollection)
gloss: maybe 40

in both cases, various services are staggered as needed (usually not all at a time)
not including regular tips or holiday or birthday tip.
prices are USD, NYC

ETA: I find that just like a regular omakase sushi place, if you go to the same place regularly for cut, color, and other services, the rates can be less than published, but the price reductions might fluctuate or be a bit opaque. For the significant number of clients that go to different salons for cut and color, I believe they tend to pay published rates. But this is just my anecdotal observation over the years.

ETA: for my best friends daughters high school graduation, I gifted her the works (including a mani pedi). total cost 1K USD Excluding tip. The salon did ask if she was over 18, perhaps bc of color, IDK. But, apparently she has a lot of hair and the salon had so much fun with her that they spent about six hours and made her feel like a princess. ( She was able to take advantage of this prior to prom so it was especially appreciated). they also gave her the color info they used, so she could have another stylist help her in her college town.
Same. My daughter wants to go to my salon. I would rather buy her Hermes RTW and bags, not kidding.

I go to a stylist in suburban DC who gives me a Deva (curly girl) cut. Hair is cut dry, then washed, some clips are added and I sit under a dryer. $95, which I consider a bargain in this day and age. I lost my hair after chemo a few years ago and decided not to color the gray when it grew back, which makes life much easier.

I try to refresh my roots at a cheaper salon ieMadison reed. It is much cheaper for roots.
Even Botox is out of control:lol:
Thanks for the answer. I agree with your hubby. You need good hair.
Have used Madison Reed for a period of time (during Covid) but had to return to the salon (too much red)
for color correction & I'm happy I did. Salon now uses Schwarzkopf which is
a better color range for me. Also now using Leonor Greyl which has made a nice difference
in the condition of my hair. Agree, there is nothing like having "good hair".. & whatever it
costs, it's your hair...JMO

Assuming all the costs quoted at USD. My costs increased in the last 2 years when I've had to start colouring my hair (all women on my mums side grow white hair in their 30s).

I book all my cut + colours a year in advance. Pretty sure my hairdresser isn't charging me the full amount... I've been with her for 20 years now.

$270 cut + colour (in AUD) every 8 weeks. I'm at 4 weeks since my last visit and I am seeing greys already.

All I'll say is I'm so glad colour these days is so much better than when I had to colour my hair for my mum. Ammonia and all sorts.

I get a cut about every 3~4 months from my usual guy I've been using for about 10 years.

He still charges $40. I pay him $80

I sometimes get my cut at work by the Hair Department. They don't charge. I pay $40. For some reason they take offence when I try to pay them.

I'm in South Jersey (completely different environment from North Jersey) and I pay $300+ for trim/ombre/Olaplex. (This is one of the 'nicer' salons in the area mind you, but we are FAR from the economic prosperity that exists up north.)
"Central" Jersey here, and ditto! I pay upwards of $300 for a trim, balayage/baby lights and gloss. It's actually bizarre how much salons are now charging and I'm thinking of breaking up the services (trim and gloss at the a mall salon since those are the things just about anyone can do properly).

I grew my dyed hair out during the covid lockdowns and now am 100% white/grey. It costs me £35 (approx. $45) plus tips every 6-7 weeks for a wash, trim and blow-dry. The dyeing of it was where the previous expense lay.

France, Côte d’azur

I go to the hairdresser’s every 4 weeks.
Roots, haircut and styling cost me 101 €
It used to be 92€ one year ago.
Most of my friends go to other places and spend around 80€.

I live in the Midwest US and pay $200 (without tip) for cut, style, base color.

It used to be worth it when I had a stylist who would make my hair look just like the picture I gave her. The only stylist I ever had that could do it. But she moved and the stylist I have now only has normal skills.

I think the truly talented stylists are worth it but I think paying them big bucks increases the rate for even the average stylists.

Same on LI. I don’t think the chemicals nor the rent went up that much.
And stylists shaming customers for trying to save money is unbecoming.
It needs to be a good experience on both ends, imo.
Otoh, it is super easy to book at anytime, at my convenience.
I just booked for new year Eve. Unheard of before.
