How many carats is the average engagement ring?

my husband bought my e-ring/wedding set at Sams Club in 2001. it's 1.5 carats total, and he paid exactly $888 for it. we had it appraised at a jeweler in 2002, and it is officially insured for $2,200. not a bad deal.

It's funny, but I finally got a 1.51 carat diamond, and I'm having so many problems with it! Basically, it won't fit in a lot of the settings I like, so I either have to pay for them to remake the whole thing or settle for something that's premade, but not necessarily the ring of my dreams! Also, it sticks out a lot more and I scratch everything with it (from the kids to my bags!). I'm almost tempted to trade in for something smaller now!

I will go out an buy you a smaller diamond, just send me the monstrosity that's doing all that terrible scratching and the sparkling. Such a shame! Lol. Another option is to have it tension set, flush to your finger. One woman I know is a nurse and that's how she has hers set, so it doesn't snag on latex gloves. See here or here or here for some ideas. There won't be any prongs for the ring to snag with.

I could not BELIEVE how beautiful the diamonds were at the Costco I visited last weekend! We don't have one close but I was visiting friends. They were drop dead, make your jaw hit the floor stunning. Seriously - if I had the room on my credit card...hehe...

My ER is 1ct radiant with lots of princess cut diamonds channel set around the band. WR is matching channel set princess cut. Around here, I think 1ct. is pretty much the norm!

Just to let everyone know, at Sam's Club, they show some real diamonds and some settings that contain CZ center stones. I'm pretty sure it would work the same at Costco's.

The CZs are not sold with the settings, but are there as an idea of how the ring would look with a certain carat weight. The CZs are clearly marked with the letters "CZ" on the top of the diamond. When you purchase the ring, the store will order the diamond to set into it. There's no way they could sell you the CZ center stone and pass it off as a diamond. If you look closely enough in the showcase, you can see which centerstones are real and which are labeled as fake.

Although the CZs they use are pretty darn sparkly, I wish they weren't stamped!

Oh, I see. Yes they were crazy sparkly..... I wasn't close enough to see a stamp, but damn, who's to say you wouldn't just want to buy it with the CZ if it's that gorgeous? lol

My engaged friends range from 0.10ct, 0.20ct, 0.22ct, 0.33ct and 0.50ct. I'm from the north of England and big e-rings are fairly rare. I think it depends on age and where you live. The older i get the bigger the rings are when my friends get engaged!
The biggest i know is my jeweller she has 1.75ct

You ladies should have seen me all this past week craning my neck to look at rings as I was dropping off my daughter in pre-K, since we make a line before the doors open I was "appraising" rings as moms walked by:p. Its a pretty upscale area so I do see alot of gorgeous ring, I did notice that they are all dainty/moderate in size Id say ranging in the .75 to a few in the 1.50 on the younger moms(early 20-30) They all do look exquisite though, very bright & lots of fire.

Now when I looked at all the more mature moms,as well as all the grandmothers picking up the kids...those rocks were huge:drool:,as well as blinged out ears, and wrist LOL. I was stuck staring at one that was at least 3.ct,and surrounded by pave diamonds. That women will probably avoid me now..LOL.

I think that the older we get the smaller a diamond appears (maybe its got something to do with our eyesight hehehe) therefore we are more drawn to the big bling!

Personally I wear less, but I do want it to be bolder as Im getting older. Anyway,my point is I think the average size probably has to do with what stage,or age in life youre in.

I agree to an extent. In my experience woman who are engaged young 20ish have a smaller e-ring then 30-40ish it would be bigger because by then you may have a better job more money more bling.
The older you are the more anniversaries & more upgrades :graucho:
But my grandmother's have small e-rings because they never got upgrades as in those days jewellery wasn't a priority.

I had a small e-ring when i got engaged at 20 when i was a poor student but now we're working i got an upgarade to 1.00ct.

I think the average here and pricescope is a carat to two but in the US in general it would be below .5 not including wealthy areas where seeing rocks over 2 is the norm.

I agree with most everyone here. I live in NYC, so my idea of 'normal' is skewed. Since I got engaged pretty young (24), my hubby and I cut a deal: cap of $10K on the best diamond he could get in a setting I wanted, and I get an upgrade when I turn 35. What I ended up with: a .8 carat D VS2 in Harry Winston's HW setting in platinum. What I'm looking at when I turn 35? A 2.5 carat solitaire, either ascher or radiant.

I LOVE my .8 ring (which we paired with a 2.1 carat channel band). They are crazy sparkly, yet I can wear them everyday and not feel overly self-conscious, which I do since I'm young and 'not there yet'. I work at a Big4 where the women there wear average ~3 (and I've seen some hefty 5, 6, 7 carats!!), but they are older and raking it in or they are 2nd wife of an older man. ;)

I have a question of trade-in. I can trade in my ring to HW for a ring priced at least 2x (easy peasy), but I know I would be loathe to part with it. Has anyone else traded it in? How do you feel about your decision?

Costco diamond jewelry might look good on display, but since I've never bought a piece from Costco, I really don't know how the real ones look like. All the diamond jewelry on display are not real. I think they said it on some brochure that the stones on the shelves are CZ.

...i never knew, thanks for the info...besides i doubt my dh would have been proud to get my ering from costco..yikes.

I wouldn't be so sure about that all the displays are CZ--and if they are, well perhaps it's for safety reasons. My engagement ring is actually from Costco and I have no problems saying so. It was purchased via their website, and if you read one their site, they have great guarantees.

At the time, my DH really wanted to propose and wanted to knock my socks off, but his price limit was $10,000--and at a regular jewelry store, that would get around 1 carat. Instead I received a 2.14 TCW--center stone is a 1.54 princess cut (G/VVS2), side stones are Trillions (.3 each, F/VVS2) in Platinum--and the band is very thick and heavy. The cost was $10,000--which is a slamming deal. The great thing about Costco is that they never mark and item above 14% profit, and jewelers usually do a minimum of 100%+. Our regular jeweler in Wilmington, NC resized it for us (we had custom wedding bands made as well) and said it would cost approximately $20,000-$25,000 there or elsewhere.

So that's my argument for Costco, and I've been blessed with many other insanely beautiful pieces from there. That's why I love Costco, I can get spoiled more often :yahoo:

Here's my post with pictures of my ring if your interested:

It's simple, but that's what I wanted. I can't tell you how many people have complemented me on this ring, and have been in total shock at the price.

^^Most people know I upgraded exactly a year ago and we traded mine in.
I've said it before, but I am just not sentimental about a stone. I'm sentimental about WHY he gave it to me and the promise we made, but not the little stone in metal :p
I can appreciate why some people are sentimental about it, but if you aren't really, don't be made to feel bad about it.

I'm with you! I do get sentimental about some things but I would totally trade-in rather than start over. I'm planning on pursueing this in January. I don't know if I will upgrade or just re-set.
