How many carats is the average engagement ring?

I've still got my quarter carat engagement ring from 20 (!) years ago. It's pretty and I love it so why change? Besides, it's a nice reminder from when we were young and very broke. most of my friends have about the same size or just wear wedding bands.

^^^^ I don't think it's 'coastal'. I'm landlocked in Dallas and my guess is the average here is more like 2 crts, in my specific 'burb it's bigger, maybe 3 crts.
I'm guessing Canada's average is smaller than the US and I know it's smaller in Italy as well. My ring felt very obvious in Italy but people rarely even notice it around here.

I think average should be truly average. . . and if it is, this would include what our grandmother's are wearing, our aunt's, etc. . . and if we include all of them I'd guess it's very conservative. I'd guess more people have .3 crt than 3 crts.

I think this would be a hard number for anyone to guess-we are all influenced by what is more common in our area. So I googled and it seems the US national average is .38 carats.
Swanky, I agree that the Dallas average would be bigger, but I've noticed something interesting there (don't live there but visit frequently.) Among my circle of friends (and their friends), no one wears their engagement ring during the day-only at night or when dressing up. Day-to-day they just wear their wedding band.

i have replaced my wedding band and engagement ring with an anniversary band-makes it easier for me while taking care of my child. anniversary band doesnt have a diamond sticking out so it wont hurt my kid, soon to be kids...

Wow. this is so interesting. I live near NYC and my 1.65 ctw center stone is probably average. Although nationwide I think .75-1.0 is considered average. My entire ring is 2.5 with side stones and I don't think it's crazy for this area. I always say just get what you love and what makes you and your fiance happy.

Im still surprised that my slightly over 1 carat gets so much attention here ... esp by men! Like at our christmas party a guy said to me, wow, look at your ring! Is that a carat?!! when i said yes, he said (sincerly) your boy must really love you

Another guy i hadnt seen in ages reacted similarly when i mentioned i was engaged ... his response was 'yeah, i saw that rock on your finger'.

So its weird, in Australia its def more like half carat/ 3/4 carat average ... all of my clients who are older than me and earn more than us have well under a carat diamonds.

So whenever i get 'shrinkage' from looking at all your fabulous stones (and pricescope) i just need to get a reality check!

I am from the US (the midwest, actually), but have lived in Canada for 3 years now.

I would say that the rings here in Vancouver seem to be smaller, but more sparkly. I'm not quite sure, but my experience is that it seems that Canadians sacrafice size for quality, while in the US, many people would prefer it the other way around.

Just my two cents, take it for what it's worth.

My original cs is 1.25 and the stones around it make it a 2.5ct ring. I'm in Houston. To me it seems a little bit larger than the norm. Although I do know of a few...just a few...who have 4-5 carat cs. Come 10 year anniversary we'll upgrade mine to 2 carats. I'm patiently waiting...3 more years to go.
