How many carats is the average engagement ring?

Totally!!! I mean isn't that what it's supposed to be all about?

This forum IS full of some very lucky, lucky women - and I wouldn't say that it is representative of the US or Canadian population whatsoever. I'm sure in Canada it's more like .5 as an average. I read somewhere that only 10% of women who have diamond e-rings have over 1 carat worldwide if that puts it into perspective. It's so easy to get carried away hanging with this crowd!

In my group... I'd say the average is a carat. I'm trying to think of all my friends/sister/etc...

My original was a "no name" but beautiful .8 carats :) ... my replacement (lost it) was an upgrade to 1.5 Tiffany's solitaire :D
My sister's is .66
BFF 1's is a halo with I'd say around 1 - 1.2 centre stone?
BFF 2 is 1.5 princess
BFF 3 is 1.25 solitaire
BFF 4 is about .7 I'd say
BFF 5 is about .75?
I think my brother will spring for 1 - 1.2
Sister in law's is a halo with maybe 1 - 1.2 centre stone? I cannot evaluate centre stones with halos! It's a great trick visually!!

My Solitare is less than a carat. It's .75 which seems TINY compared to what I've seen in this forum. It's hearts on fire and really good quality and I love it! DH already mentioned upgrading it at some point but for now, it's my love.

I think with the wedding bands & engagement ring all together it's about 2.5 carats but the center stone is .75.

I think the perception of the average carat size is very much influenced by your surroundings; in Chicago, a lot of my coworkers have big e-rings on their fingers, I'd say >1.5 carats at least.

Personally, I'm a romantic so I'd be happy with whatever my DBF ends up picking out!

I have an almost 2 carat classic Tiffany solitaire. It looks pretty average compared to my friend's rings. To be utterly, completely honest, the setting is way too simple/plain and my fingers are fairly large so the diamond just doesn't appear all that big.

Walking down the street, I see major bling everywhere. I do love my ring for what it symbolizes, but it does not stand out at all. It does bother me, sometimes, that my husband paid around $30K for the ring. Good quality replicas abound for a fraction of that price and few can tell the difference. If I had to do it over again I would not choose such a widely copied setting and would not buy at Tiffany.

I had to submit an appraisal to insure the ring and dropped it off at the agent's office. The admin that took the application was like, "what, is that all it is?". Then she stopped herself because she realized she was being really rude. But, her first instinct was like most would think- the ring was completely overpriced for what it was.

Are most of your coworkers 30+? My FI is from Chicago and from our circle of friends (natives, raised on the North Shore) most rings for women in their 20s seems to be 1.0-1.5, with a lot of halos. I've seen a few that are bigger on ladies closer to my age, but I can tell the diamonds are lower color and lower clarity.

I've seen plenty of 4+ carat rings, but on women in at least their late 40s and married to established surgeons/attorneys.

I don't think people should worry about carat sizes. . it's about what you and your bf can afford and what you both love. If what you want you can't afford at the time. . hold off on buying a ring or upgrade later when the two of you have more money/are more financially stable.

My classmate just got engaged during winter break and came to school sporting a huge rock: 2 carat G VS2 on a pave setting. It's beautiful. . .and it'd make my ring look like a speck! However, I love my ring to death (.68 center). It's on the small side of e-rings but I had to compromise on getting a smaller carat since I desperately wanted a Tiffany ring!

I agree 100% with you, I think ppl should go with : a) what they feel comfortable wearing, & b) what isn't going to hurt there wallet

I feel out of place when we go out here in Austin because ppl are a lot more laid back, I see a lot of wedding bands... I miss the bling in the DFW!!!

Yeah Dallas is blingier! I have a Dallas friend who just moved to Austin and I see her selling a lot of things that just don't fit so much there.

Oh wow, bless her heart but I can't say I blame her... I get some "strange" comments about my jewels here :weird: lol Something off topic but also different is the minimal make up most ladies here wear which is fine but I have a slight problem with that because the looks I get are also :weird: when we go out and I get all done up lol, I have an excuse darn it I'm a make up artist have been for the past 10 yrs so sometimes I like to do a smokey eye lol! end rant :p
