How many carats is the average engagement ring?

It depends... initially, in my inner circle, the men bought whatever they could afford (usually just under 1ct). And should the marriage last and finances be willing, etc, etc, the stone itself was upgraded by a few (typically to 1-2ct max). But this is just in my neck of the woods.
Overseas, I can't help but notice that large stones are rarely a common occurence in either Europe or Asia.

As other posters mentioned it depends on several factors such as Location, age, if the size of the stone is important to the couple, wether the man shops on his own or the women is involved. I read recently from some diamond association that the average engagement ring in the US is between .50 to 1 carat

Wow. .38 a carat? I find that quite odd. I would think that the average ring size would be a LOT bigger. Although, I have to admit, I LOVE rings with small stones. To me, smaller stones do well enough in saying, "I'm married!" while larger stones seem to say, "Look at my finger!"
I thought that too but then the article says that in some areas the average is around 2.75 so I guess it really depends on the location.
There is a radio commercial for a jewelry store in this area where the man says that the average size of an engagement ring is between 1/3 and 3/4 of a carat. I don't know how true that is, although in this area it is probably pretty close. Mine is 1/4 carat, as that was what we could afford when we got married. It is likely that in the next few years I will either have that stone reset or just plain upgrade with a different set. For me it is less about the size of the diamond than the style of the ring, and my preference for the style changed within about a year after getting married (and has stayed consistent since then).
it totally depends on where you live. When I used to live in NYC, the financial district ladies have avg. 2.5-3 carat. In DC metro where I live now, 1.5-2 seems to be average. When I was in Atlanta, 1 seems to be the average size so I guess it sorta depends on the area.
