How many carats is the average engagement ring?

...i never knew, thanks for the info...besides i doubt my dh would have been proud to get my ering from costco..yikes.

Just for your info, I'm not sure if it's true that all Costco jewelry is fake now, but it wasn't true 15 years ago. I actually wear a diamond from Costco since it's the very first diamond ring my dad bought for my mom, and she gave it to me. They were pretty poor at the time and it was what he could afford. It's definitely real according to the jewelers who have cleaned it over the years, and it honestly looks like any other diamond, pretty and sparkly. Plus it's got sentimental value way above any monetary value! :smile1:

To answer the question, like most of the ladies here I think the average depends on where you are and who you hang out with. Of the women in my family it's like 2-3 carats, some of which are upgrades, but my friends who got married young like me generally have about a half carat.

I work at a jewellers in Brisbane, Aus, and most of the engagement rings we sell are probably 0.5 to 1ct. Unfortunately, a lot of people here want quantity, not quality! I think a smaller stone with better cut, clarity and colour is far better than a bigger stone with less than average quality!

I would say .5 to 1ct. My engagment ring is 2.5ct and my wedding band is 1.5ct in platinum. I never thought I would say this, but it is just too big for me and it always gets in the way of everything. Usually I just wear one or the other. I can't even imagine having a huge diamond.

If anyone else is having this problem, please PM me. I would be happy to take your large diamond off your hands. :wlae:

I'd say most of the engagement rings I see are anywhere from .5 ct to 1 ct.

Engagements rings are not that big in Norway.. Most are less than .5 ct.

Personally i would prefer a 1 ct ring or larger. I do not think that he needs to pay the entire cost if he is not able to. I would help to pay so that I could have the ring I want.

Mine is just under 1.5tcw, and my wedding band is a plain platinum band (although my first anniversary band will be 1 carat :smile1:). I have a friend with a princess solitaire that hits 2.3tcw and a channel set band around the 1ct mark. Another friend has a .50 diamond solitaire. It's all preference.

When I lived in San Diego (specifically La Jolla/Rancho Santa Fe), the average size I saw was around 5 carats. Now that I live in Boston, it's a much wider range, I feel. I think the average is probably just under a carat in the suburbs, and maybe 1.5-2 in the city.

I think on average it is between .35 to just under 1 carat.

My .71 carat seemed fine to me, until every female relative engaged after me received 1 to 3 carat engagement rings. After that my e-ring seemed puny in comparison at family reunions :p

But from what I usually see when I'm out, it's usually a modest diamond of under a carat, or 3 or 5-stone diamonds that fill the 1-carat bill, or coupled with simple diamond wedding bands.

It's funny, but I finally got a 1.51 carat diamond, and I'm having so many problems with it! Basically, it won't fit in a lot of the settings I like, so I either have to pay for them to remake the whole thing or settle for something that's premade, but not necessarily the ring of my dreams! Also, it sticks out a lot more and I scratch everything with it (from the kids to my bags!). I'm almost tempted to trade in for something smaller now!

I don't pay close enough attention to other women's rings. First, they vary so greatly in [apparent] carat size. I'm not good at determining carat size just by looking, and in no way am I going to ask anyone. Second, even if you see a ring that's incredibly lovely/a few carats, how do you know, from sight alone, whether or not it's even real? I could say to myself, "Wow, that's a stunning diamond!" But for all I know it's CZ or moissanite or white sapphire or something, so why bother trying to size it up? I mean, I know a couple women with modest-sized simulants (around a carat) as their engagement rings, you know? And I would never ask a woman if hers is a diamond any more than I'd inquire about the size.

By the way, do you factor in whether or not it's diamond into the "average size" equation?

Costco would NOT sell fake diamonds. They care too much about their business reputation. They buy alot, minimal overhead, no middleman, & their money is good. That's why they offer better deals.

I could not BELIEVE how beautiful the diamonds were at the Costco I visited last weekend! We don't have one close but I was visiting friends. They were drop dead, make your jaw hit the floor stunning. Seriously - if I had the room on my credit card...hehe...

My ER is 1ct radiant with lots of princess cut diamonds channel set around the band. WR is matching channel set princess cut. Around here, I think 1ct. is pretty much the norm!

My original ER was just barely over 1 ct. with .25 ct (each) sidestones. I just upgraded after 5 years to a 2.2 ct. center stone and .70 sidestones. I got engaged when I lived in NYC, and my 1 ct. was relatively small in comparison to a lot of the stones I saw. I think the 2.2 ct. in Houston is fairly large. Honestly, though, a lot depends on your finger size. Mine is fairly large so the diamonds aren't nearly as impressive on me. :)
