How many carats is the average engagement ring?

In our area, it seems as if the "standard" is one carat with the ladies who wear a lot of other bling having more.

My SO is afraid that my ring (1.38 center stone with another 62 points in side stones) will look to show-offy, but I think it will be OK.

Costco diamond jewelry might look good on display, but since I've never bought a piece from Costco, I really don't know how the real ones look like. All the diamond jewelry on display are not real. I think they said it on some brochure that the stones on the shelves are CZ.
...i never knew, thanks for the info...besides i doubt my dh would have been proud to get my ering from costco..yikes.

My boyfriend and I went and looked at rings, and my dream ring has a .75 center stone, and 2 pear side stones.. I can't remember the exact weight.. but I know it was a bit over 1 carat...

I live in Seattle and I don't know that there is any set carat weight for an average.. I feel like I see every shape and size around here :)

this is not to show off or anything but my ering is a three stone oval diamond setting. i believe the total carat weight is a little over 3 carats. i love my ring and i'm in NYC area so i understand the whole thing about big rocks.

BUT, i also find that i can't wear it daily when i'm with my kids, at the playground, pool, etc., b/c i knock my hand around a lot. so, crazy me, i actually bought an alternative diamond .75 solitare ering with round diamond accents for my "rough" use days and keep the bigger ering for social events.

i love both b/c of the uses i get from each of them.

.75 is plenty good if you're looking for a median size, not too big, definitely not too small.

It should be what makes you happy!!!

Ditto:yes:

I have been married for almost 17 years with the same man. All I want back then was any ring that can bound us togather, the size wasn't even my concern. We were young and just newly graduated from university. After 10 years of marriage, he bought me a 2ct+( D color, clarity VS1) ring for our anniversary. As I get older, the greedier I get...now I hope that he would upgrade it to a bigger size stone.:graucho:

Anyway, I think the average engagement ring in my area is around 1-1.5ct. The quality of the stone is more important to me then the size though. Like I rather get a smaller stone but with top color, the clarity, I think I can let that slide to vs1...lol. Oh the cutting of the stone is very important too.

Congrats on your engagement!

i have a little over a carat..i still love it after all these years (almost 15)

i have tried other rings, we almost bought a 2.5 carat stone a few years ago (during that whole stock market craze)...i went home and didn't feel good about it. i still like my original ring, it symbolizes a lot to me.

but when i see a big diamond, i always like to admire it.

I think it depends on location. I know in NYC it's way higher ct count, at least with people I know. I would say average is 2.5 - 3 ct. My first e-ring was 7.5 ct total. The center stone was 5.3 ct. I know I am not the norm.

I also agree the average size is between 1/2 to 1 carat. I think a lot depends on the age of the couple getting married. I was 22 when I got engaged and my original diamond was .63. My friends who got married in their late 20's got at least a carat. We finally upgraded after 8 years and now mine is now 2.54.:yahoo:

in my circle, at least friends, families and colleagues, 1 carat is the most common, and it annoys me when ppl comment on my 1.5. i've once been asked by this person at work "is this real, i've never seen a stone so big". it doesn't help that i have really skinny fingers too.

From what I have been reading on this thread, I guess the average is 1. My engagement ring is a 4 ct princess cut flanked by 1 ct trillion cut diamonds on each side. I rarely wear my ring because, first, I am not really a ring person and secondly, I find it too bling bling for my comfort. I guess if you plan to wear you engagement ring everyday, a carat is just right.

I am 23 and mine is 1.07 I live in Hertfordshire in England which is a very nice area just outside of London with a lot of big houses, designer boutiques etc, however I really do not see many people with rings more than 0.25-0.75 on. In London however my ring is small compared to a lot of peoples
