How many carats is the average engagement ring?

Really? I would have guessed bigger. I do a lot of charity work and I have seen rings that make my eyes pop out of my head! :p

Hey sorry, didn't see your reply till now. I'm basing this on the women I work with. Mid 20's to early 30's, working in marketing...I do know of people upgrading to a bigger stone after a few years, but so far I haven't seen bigger than 1.5.

I think it depends on what age you're in when you get engaged. For 20s, I think the average is 1 carat. 30s, I think it's 1.5-2 carat. I don't know of anyone that got married in their 40s, so I don't know.
I got married (for first time) in my early 40s and my DH got me a Tiffany's .75 ct G, VS2 RB, (think this is the "lowest", that T diamonds go). I like it, it is lovely but I am frankly bored with it and want to upgrade. Took it to T's with the cert to see what they cd do, but they want to see a receipt because DH who is Swiss bought it in Tiffany's Zurich. Somebody told me if you want to upgrade at T's you have to spend double of what you originally spent! I am not that crazy about T's rings, although the cut of a T diamond is superb, as I have another beautiful ring (1.90 ct Emerald cut F/VS2 with two .60 perfectly matched sapphires on the sides) that was remade from my mother's ring, and it doesn't matter where I am, I get comments, including from the T salespeople when I brought in my ering. I have found wonderful looking diamonds on jamesallen and whiteflash. Took that T ring to two independent jewelers I know and they will give me ~3,000 for the T ring as a trade. Found a superb 1.25 H/VS1 in a beautiful setting for $8500 at one of the independents, I don't know though. Thanks all for reading my first post!

I should add that DH doesn't even want me to trade the Tiffany ring as he thinks it will bring bad luck. I am not that devoted to the ring, I am more devoted to my plain Cartier wedding band, which is simply beautiful and classic.

I would say around .5 to 1 carat, give or take a bit of weight ;)

I don't have an engagement ring (but am getting married soon!) so I don't really know. A friend of mine's engagement ring doesn't even have a diamond on it, she's got a beautiful Topaz ring!

Wow, your ring sounds pretty!! Could you show us pictures?

*bumping*

I've read 1/3 of a carat for the U.S. average too. In the Bay Area, I usually see from .50 to 2 carats w/ some smaller and larger exceptions. Also, 1ct eng. rings are still pretty common in many areas.

In Paris, the diamonds seemed very small, under .50 and often set into wedding bands (flush or burnished)...or quite large - 3cts and over.

I had a 1ct round solitaire but shrinkage set in and I also realized that I don't like rounds on my hand. So, I bought another and made stud earrings. We picked a 2ct oval for my new 'eng. ring' solitaire. Again shrinkage and a shape preference change. :push:

Now I really want a 5-7ct Emerald Cut but until that blessed day, I wear my Cartier trinity rolling ring, generic diamond eternity, diamond & sapphire Harry Winston eternity, or this cool stainless steel and YG ring I found on Ebay.:smile1:

I realize that I should have gone with an eternity style in the first place until truly deciding on my ideal solitaire shape and size.

Costco diamond jewelry might look good on display, but since I've never bought a piece from Costco, I really don't know how the real ones look like. All the diamond jewelry on display are not real. I think they said it on some brochure that the stones on the shelves are CZ.

Actually, I've read that the averaged carat weight sold for engagement rings are just over 1/3 cts. Around 33-38 points.

I have itty bitty fingers, so anything above a 1/2ct looks big on me... I actually let my bf know I'd prefer a high quality 40-50 point diamond in a nice platinum setting. He got goggle-eyed b/c I know he's been mentally sweating the idea of getting me a nicer ring than his former fiancee, and she got a .73ct gold ring... (he popped the question to his high school sweetheart after 6yrs of dating she said yes, and then she broke it off a few months later)

heheh... so eventually we're gonna trade-in her ring (yup she gave it back) and use the credit to trade-up for me!

That's exactly how I feel and I told my bf the same thing before he asked me-and I got what I asked for;) :yahoo:

I would say .5 to 1ct. My engagment ring is 2.5ct and my wedding band is 1.5ct in platinum. I never thought I would say this, but it is just too big for me and it always gets in the way of everything. Usually I just wear one or the other. I can't even imagine having a huge diamond.

i would DEFINITELY say less than 1 carat, prob in the .5 carat range. I live in a pretty swishy area and my 3 ct very good quality radiant cut is just no big deal around here (that sounds so weird). but, in more rural areas, etc a 1 ct is awesome, so it all averages out

i wanted to quote melikemochi and how he/she said that costco has got good bling and yes! it's true. sometimes i heard that they have hearts on fire and i think that's awesome , i haven't seen it there before but i'm sure it's true. i think i might have saw it on the diamond forum pricescope. i use to browse around that forum a lot when me and my boyfriend were shopping around for our promise rings. but i seriously wouldn't mind getting an engagment ring from costco. hehehee, even if people asked where i got it from, i would say costco! i mean, i'm not a cheapie in other areas but i'm sure nobody would ask me where i got it from (unless they're looking for ideas). but yeah, my promise ring cost quite a lot.
the center is about a 1/2 ct and has two side stones on it 1/4 each. and basically this could be my engagment ring. right? yeah, i'm so lucky. i shouldn't be wanting anymore.
but to answer your question on what is the average size, i think it's 1/2 to 1 ct. for the average on what i've seen for women. i was working in retail for a while (selling high-end sunglasses) and the married women i usually sold to (who bought 200-300 dollars worth of sunnies), had a ring about 1ct. i mean i think they've got money to spend and they're not totally well off but they're making it (i'd say middle class). sorry about the rambling but when it comes to diamonds, i always love talkin about them.

Mine is 2 carats. I have no idea what the average is. I would LOVE something bigger & will in time. HOWEVER, it will be worn on my right hand as I could never part w/ my original set! Even DH said "get whatever we can afford, just please keep the original", awwww, gotta love that he too is sentimental!
