How many carats is the average engagement ring?

I think it depends on the age group you're asking. For my friends (in their 20s) they think 1 carat is minimum and that a ring should be around 10k (at least). On friend refuses to consider rings less than 1.5 carats. My BF thinks 10k for a ring is reasonable (he is in his early 30s) while I have a cheap friend who only spent 5k (don't know what size rock he bought). Most older generations have smaller engagement rings... but of course they've traded up over the years!

if 2 months salary tax free is the base price, it would be fair to assume that the boyfriend has to make at least $60,000 a year to get a ring worth $10,000 a nice one carat with a decent setting?

The "2-month salary" is such a marketing scheme...If you consider someone who has to pay a mortgage/rent, food, gas, etc, taking a 2 month gross salary for the ring is pretty harsh.

The boyfriend should just get whatever he's comfortable with, it's not really about how much he spends it on.

Back to the original topic...most people I know in the 20's are getting 1 carat.

I need help! I got engaged about a week ago and when my fiance' proposed I was obsessed with the ring. It is a little over a carat princess cut with 2 small baguettes on either side that are princess cut too. It is set in a semi-thin, but not too thin platinum band. So anyway I was in love, but the more I look at it the smaller it seems to look and now I am at the point where I think it is too small....am I being a crazy snob? Is this normal to have your ring seem to shrink? I love my fiance' and would never tell him these thoughts so I figured I'd post....help! Is 1ct with alittle more average???

Thanks!

GIRL!! Are you crazy?? That is an INSANELY beautiful style, you were absolutely right to be in love with it. It shows you have wonderful taste!!

Most girls will never see that fabulous a ring, beleive me. You DO NOT want to get all caught up in the size of his precious love gesture. Trust me... I've had a couple rings (shhhhush don't bring it up around DH!) and the 1 carat I had wasn't as nice as yours and girl, women grabbed my hand, complimented me, and begged me to wear it!

As you get older and stay together, you can always upgrade it, get a different setting or center stone, whatever.

The point of the whole thing is A WONDERFUL MAN PROPOSED TO YOU WITH A BEAUTIFUL RING. Congrats!!! What a wonderful year for you this will be! Lots of hugs, whatever you decide and honey remember...

No matter what ring you have, the real jewel is the man it represents. Congrats again :yahoo:

weehoo, first of all, Congratulations!

you might get more responses if you made a new thread. but I think that 1ct. is a good size! Shrinkage is normal...but I don't know if it's normal in 1 week. =) Maybe if you modify the setting, it will look better to you. But it might be a little soon to tell your fiance that you want a bigger stone already. Just remember that the ring is only a small part of being engaged...it's about being able to spend the rest of your life with the one you love, not the rest of your life with a ring. :flowers:

1 ct is the standard for 1st time rings where I sell. But I would also say that I sell WAY more upgraded 5ct+ rings. I just had a bride that upgraded from a 2 to a 4 the week before her wedding. Crazy.

I just got engaged and my ring is actually a 1ct sapphire in a bezel-style micro pave setting that I designed with one of our jewelers. It is going to be sold in my store now in diamond and sapphire versions!

Bet you work at Tivol's!

I live in Vegas & I see tons of huge stones here. Size here doesn't mean cheap quality either. Most people who have big rings are educated enough to not try to pull that crap. We have a Harry Winston & Graff store. Also their ugly stepsister Tiffany.

Thank you for your responses! I think I am just being crazy because you wait your whole life for something this important and exciting to happen and when it does you want it to be perfect! The ring is beautiful and the guy who gave it to me is even better, so I am going to stop being stupid. You guys rock and have made me an instant fan of this site (I just joined!)

Thanks again everyone!!!
