How many carats is the average engagement ring?

I've heard of SI1 being referred to as "frozen spit." I don't think I have ever seen one to give an opinion.

A nice SI1 G ideal cut is actually what the people at the diamond forums call the "sweet spot" for round diamonds. The cut makes the G look whiter and the round brilliance makes it appear eye clean. However, you have to better on clarity with other cuts.

nice ring ACE!!

Candace - can't wait to see your 5carat. i'm totally droooling at the thought of it...

i'm not engaged and probably not going to be soon since my bf can't seem to commit (it's a long story)

but i have bigger fingers and i've tried on rings for my personal satisfaction and i can definitely take 2 - 3 carats! that is my ideal size. now i just have to find someone who will be proposing with the ideal ring...

i think in NYC avg is probably 1.5 - 2 with a minimum of 1 carat. even my friend's friend who was a teacher proposed with a 1 carat ring!!

Hey thanks for the info! There was a pretty entertaining thread on a diamond website from a woman who claims to have a frozen spit diamond. She wanted the biggest nastiest looking diamond & found one. :roflmfao:
Wish I book marked it.

More jewelry addict too here.
This stone was one messed up piece of work. Not one of DeBeers finest! It was shallow & long. Why somone even bother to cut it instead of use it for some industrial purpose, we'll never know. Thinking about it cracks me up. She had a heck of a sense of humor about it, wore it for shock value.

I'm not the type to choose size/quantity over quality. I mean I've seen some huge diamonds that are "dingy" in color and mediocre in quality.

Personally, I'd prefer a small diamond/carat that is at the top of the line in terms of the other C's (Cut, Clarity and Color).

I agree totally

Mine is 0.75 carats but is D colour and VVSI clarity so it a really beautiful clear white diamond. I could have a had a 1 carat + diamond with much less clarity and more yellow in colour for the same price but we choose quaility over quantity

Agreed about the quality issue - I think alot of people go for size now but sacrifice quality. I mean someone was telling me that they saw a 1 carat ring for about 2k in some department store, when a 1 carat is about 13k at Tiffany's you know there is a big difference in quality between the two stones. Size isnt' everything.

Average in the U.S. as a whole - probably 1 carat or less

Average here in NYC - way more, more like 2 carats.

Mine is 3.5 but it isn't a diamond, so it doesn't really count... this is one reason I didn't get a diamond in the first place -- I just didn't want to play the "how rich are you?" game with something that should be so meaningful. Most people have no clue about the pricing of other precious stones, so I'm generally safe from having anyone try and guess how much it costs, as so many here are apt to do
