riteria to Use in Shopping for a Diamond Ring
Financial experts recommend that couples spend not more than three
weeks' salary, or roughly 6 percent of annual income. On the other
hand, the jewelry experts recommend inve Couples with limited finances
at the time of their engagement can certainly reset the stone or add
extra stones at a later date.

The diamond industry has identified the four C's -- color, clarity,
cut, and carat weight -- to assist consumers in making educated
purchases.

The majority of diamonds do appear colorless, though there are many
that contain a hint of color. The Gemological Institute of America has
a letter grading system for classifying the color of diamonds,
starting with D for the slightest blue tone and spanning the alphabet
to Z for the yellow stones.
The clarity of a diamond refers to the number of internal flaws
contained in the stone. Diamonds, the crystallized form of carbon, may
contain some impurities that are often visible only by a jeweler's
microscope. The fewer number of flaws increases the value of the
stone.
The cut of a diamond refers to the design of facets, including the
round solitaire, marquise, oval, pear, and emerald. High quality
diamonds reflect more light and appear to have a greater sparkle. The
marquise cut refers to a stone that is pointed at both ends. An
emerald cut refers to a stone that is square or rectangular.
The karat of a stone is a unit of weight for precious gems equal to
200 milligrams. There are 100 points to a karat. The average size of
an engagement ring today is about .75 karat.

Thank you for that info Selena :D The b/f and I are starting to look at rings and these guidelines are helpful. I really want to design my own though but we have a family jeweler whom my mother buys way to much stuff from, so maybe we can get a deal :graucho:

This is a chart of recently purchased diamonds off bluenile.com.

Recently Purchased Diamonds

What I find disturbing about that chart, and I admit I looked quickly, is that it doesn't tell what cut their customers' are buying. Rock geeks maintain that cut is the most important factor of a diamonds bling, therefore it's also a major factor in the cost. The problem with that chart IMHO is it's incomplete.

I actually based my diamond weight preference on what suited my finger, I have a size 3 ring finger...... I found an emerald cut diamond that I really liked which is slightly more than 1 ct and on the larger measurment range of the well cut emerald (but still in the correct range) so it actually looks a little larger than others of a similar weight. Between that and the very heavy platinum scott kay setting (which took forever for them to make because they had to create a mold as they never made this setting this small before) with an addition half carat of chanel set princess cuts the ring looks pretty substantial on my finger. When my husand and I finally got to pick it up we were like wow that looks bigger than we thought it would..... Anyway, I guess what I'm getting at it isn't always just about what you can or can't afford, I've read about celebrities having 1 and 2 carat diamonds and I know they can afford more than me..........to each their own.....

I agree it depends on the area, when I lived in El Paso, my .75 with 6 additional surrounding stones was large. In Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia area, it is average to small.

ace, do you have any pictures? i've been looking at similar rings online!

Hi, sorry, I just now saw your question.. Here you go~ pardon my dusty keyboard :shame:

I went ring shopping yesterday! I was told that around 1 carat seems to be the average but this is size only, I agree the other C's makes a difference.

I'm looking at a 1.5 carat, I really want a quality 1.5 vs. a ok 2 carat.
