How many bags are too many bags?

I was wondering how many bags is too many? I was looking at my collection and reading the blogs from fellow TPF'ers, and was wondering, how many bags should you have before you stop or start selling?

Right now i'm all about my mono speedy. I just cant stop using it and im feeling guilty that i dont want to switch out of it. I have listed a ton of my bags, I can use the money for something else rather that sitting in my closet not being used,

Off the top of my head I have 22 bags, give or take and yes, I hear it all the time from my family.... Some are extremely loved and highly prized to me but have been used to the point where I feel I have to keep them in their dustbags because I don't want to ruin them anymore! Some I haven't used more than a handful of times because they're seasonal ie. I have Summer/Winter bags...I have a gorgeous Gucci bag that's only reserved for special events like weddings and it was given to me by my husband about 6 years ago and it's still in MINT condition! I could never part with it...I try to be fair to my 'pretties' :p by rotating them every couple of days or every week. It depends on what I'm wearing or feeling at the moment and will change purses...The weather is a factor as well LOL...So to answer your question, for me, there's no definite number on when to stop. In fact, I have no urge to stop at all...! For me, it's the only thing that I truly collect and spend money on. I also buy bags as a way to symbolize an event that happened at that time....I think every bag I have has a story and to sell them would mean losing that memory in a way....I don't think I'll ever sell any of my bags, regardless on whether I use them or not ;)

This is such a subjective question and everyone will have different answers.

Personally for me, when my collection gets to over 5 handbags, I tend to start neglecting some of my bags. Currently, I have 6 plus another one in the mail. I love all my bags, but I shamelessly admit that I don't use them all. I keep a couple exclusively for sentimental reasons. :shame: I might consider selling one or two on ebay (maybe when the economy is doing better in several months too).

Good question. I have just started to collect bags 3 years ago but I don't really have a number in mind. Also because I'm a late collector I really missed out on some important pieces. Like the Fendi Spy. It's sort of out dated now but I still want it to be part of my collection.
I think once I have one bag from each designer on this forum I will be content.
I would not want to sell any of those bags. They are iconic pieces to me.
So I plan to keep them forever.
The wish list also keeps me on tract and stops me from just buy a bag because it is on sale.
I think if you buy too many bags at once and go into debt that would really spoil the fun of collecting. It should be a fun hobby and not a bank breaker.
So my answer to this question is about 25-30 bags in one lifetime.

I agree with lunatwinkle, I can't see myself with more than six and actually using them all. Thus my handbag collection is almost complete! It's different for everyone, but I get irritated occasionally with my roommate for having so many pairs of shoes (like 33?) that literally flood our entrance and coat-rack room, and so many jackets (like 23?) that I seriously can't get my vacuum out without some good tugging and struggling. Hats are really my thing, I will have about 20 by the end of this year (scary I know...), but I keep them in my own living space.

Is there such a thing as too many handbags? And if so, how do you define "too many"?

Yes, when you rotate on a daily basis and a year later you still haven't worn the same bag twice ;)

I think too many is when you don't know what you have in you collection anymore.

:thinkin: but at least then you can go 'shopping' in your own collection and find a nice surprise :graucho:

Seriously, I have a 'collection' and then I have a vintage stash. None are going anywhere without me and I certainly don't really have any 'gaps'. I am happy.

When the number of bags you have reduces the enjoyment you have in the bags you actually use.

(negative consequence reducing enjoyment can include lack of storage space, confusion and clutter, excessive $$$ investment in non used bags, bag spending causing money problems, grief from family, etc, etc, etc)
