All of mine (17) handbags are stored in the closet in their boxes with the cloth bags and airbags. Just as I received them I truly believe that their laying flat on their backs is needed for certain leathers. Clememance seems to fold in on it self as it seems to be a softer leather. As long as they are not exposed to Sunlight, their is not a wrong or right way. Just how compulsive you are with your investment.
ChanelCamelia, why would you worry about mold in California? Typically, mold is a problem in more humid/damp climates.
I've posted this already ages ago so some have already seen it. This is how I store my H bags ... in my closet ... and they're stuffed with the air pillows inside.

This is an important question.
I have seen Birkins damaged from improper storage. Skins like Barenia and Vache Naturel are particularly susceptible to color variations if the bag is stored all closed up, as it is when you buy it. I store my Birkins in a very particular way to avoid any color change to the front panel.
- Laying on the back to prevent any slouching of the skin.
- Flap tucked in to allow even air access to the entire front panel.
- Straps gently pulled forward, but not tucked in the glides, to allow even air access to the front panel and prevent glide marks on the straps.
- No lock or clochette dangling on the front or back of the bag to prevent scratches.
- In the dustbag with air pillows inside the bag.

That's the way I store mine too and figure the same thing. And besides, I like the little ceremony involved in taking them out of their boxes and whispering "hello gorgeous" to them each time.![]()
