How Do You Store Your Birkins?

This is a bit off topic from me, but the wonderful shoe displays that La Van has (sure she will fill in) I think Guccigals talented brother produced them for her. They displayed her Manolos in a novel and unique way.

My air pillows lost it's air. So I have thrown them out. Anyone know if I can get them? Alternatively, I'm thinking of buying nice little pillows/ cushions (maybe make them myself with silk??) instead.

Is it bad not to have the air pillows? Mine are all togo..so they hold their shape pretty alright.

Pretty much like most of us, I store them in their dust covers w/air pillows on their backs. I do not put them in their boxes. Just.a storage issue.

The Chanel ladies freaked me out because many insisted that mold can develop when stored inside boxes, even in non-humid environments. Has anyone had that with their Hermes bags? I wonder if the leather treatments used by the different houses makes any difference? I'd be mortified if I went and opened up an orange box only to find mold growing on my Birkin! :faint::wtf::throwup:

I think anywhere that is dark and not dry can develop mold. My part of Alaska is not particularly humid, but there are a few weeks a year where it can really ruin a closet. Just be sure the A/C is on and if you need, a dehumidifier is always a safe bet. When I lived in Asia, I had TWO dehumidifiers going 24hrs in my closet. It was a big closet but needless to say, even with A/C on, I still needed the dehumidifiers. Better to be safe than sorry.

Off topic, but....You're in Alaska? We were just there! Beautiful!

ChanelCamelia, why would you worry about mold in California? Typically, mold is a problem in more humid/damp climates.

I live on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We don't use our AC because we prefer the ocean breeze. The air is quite moist. I haven't had a problem yet with my purses but one can never be too careful, especially with H bags.

But in general, even in California mold can grow anywhere when the conditions are right: not enough light, not enough air circulation, too much moisture, etc. California also has alot of micro-climates (not all of California is dry desert).

In fact I used to store some of my kids' old clothes that they've outgrown in plastic see-through boxes before I give them to Goodwill and they got musty. I now store them with desiccants and in paper boxes. The desiccants help.

The humidity level in S. Cal is never that high. I have yet to have anything get moldy or musty. Granted, if there is constant moisture from a water leak, that would be a different situation.

usually my amazon orders arrive with air bags. or you can get the small boudouir down pillows but i found them too big for 30cm birkins. i just use the air pillows. am going to get a pillow for my 35cm birkin though.

Thanks everyone! Glad I could give you ideas. Do have a look at PBC and Rockerchic's closets as they're fabulous!!! Their closets are custom made while mine is simply a spare room that I furnished with pieces from everywhere lol!

Sammyjoe - You're right! The two shoe stands were custom made by Guccigal's brother. They're fab and I love them!!!

kim mac - My shoe and bag cabinets are simply book shelves with glass doors. I have little feet so my shoes fit comfortably on slim book shelves ... and very cheap ones from Ikea (the Billy model). For the curtains and my cube chair (custom made), I chose fabrics from Designers Guild while my dressing table/mirror are antique Biedermeier pieces almost 200 years old. It took me almost two years to find the right Biedermeier table for my mirror and I'm glad I found one with the same wood and finish. They look like they were purchased together. The ceiling lamp is also an antique Art Nouveau piece by Elf.

You can have moisture in the air without high humidity. There are plenty of California houses that have mold problems and not necessarily due to a water leak. Some houses may also be built poorly and allow moisture to seep into the walls, roof, etc. from the elements. Some houses have drainage problems that cause mold to develop where otherwise it would not. For example, mold grow in bathrooms that have poor air venting. And if you have a master bathroom next to your closet you must be all the more vigilant in preventing mold. Especially if you love taking long, hot showers that create alot of steam. Poor air circulation and lack of light also encourages mold growth.

Luckily our air circulation is fine. And although we don't personally have a water leak ourselves or any other problems that may cause mold, due to where the house is situated we get mist and fog quite often. There would probably be less moisture in the air in my house if we used the AC more. I just hate how drying the air gets if the AC or heater is constantly running. I actually use a humidifier the few times a year when we do use the AC and heater just so my skin and throat don't dry out. We also use a humidifier whenever our family members get sick. I'm also one of those people who constantly have to have the windows open. I love the fresh ocean air. Thank goodness we live in Calif. so that I can do that year round.

Like I said, I haven't had a problem with my bags getting musty or moldy yet but that doesn't stop me from worrying. Besides tossing a few desiccant pouches in with them probably helps and at the very worst sure doesn't hurt. I remember my grandmother used to use moth balls along with the silica pouches she collects (the kind you get inside leather shoes and pockets of clothes). I hate mold and I would rather do anything I can to make sure I don't get mold. Call it a mold-phobia if you will, but either way I would freak out if my H bags got any mold on them!

I think Ranag bought a H wallet and it might have had some type of mold on it. The mold was probably there before she got it but it grew and spread on her wallet. I felt so bad reading about her experience with that! Gosh, I hope that never happens to my H babies.

The old baby clothes were stored in a plastic box for awhile. Since storing them in cardboard paper boxes, they have stopped getting musty. I couldn't figure out why or how they got musty until reading an article from Martha Stewart's Living magazine. The article said that mold spores will grow and cause fabric to smell musty if they are stored in plastic. Now I know not to do that again with fabric, clothes, and purses!

With shoes, I still store them in clear plastic boxes but I drop a desiccant pouch in there as well. Desiccant is cheap, you can buy it at Michaels and for very little effort you get an added measure of security. I figure they come pre-packaged with my expensive shoes and clothes, then why not? If it's works for Gucci than it can't hurt. BTW it's so cute that Gucci has its own brown desiccant pouches with the logo and everything. I wonder if H does that.
