How Do You Store Your Birkins?

^^ooh ive never worried or experience mold - maybe ive just been lucky.... making me wonder if i should do something to prevent any in the future! we have a house on the beach in sandbanks and do get lots of erosion on windows/gates etc its amazing how harsh the sea breeze/winds are! we get more mold in the bathrooms there than where i am in the north of england. im very wary of moth prevention and have bought lots of products from total wardrobe care as a moth caused a small hole in my Liza Bruce cashmere kaftan!! i hadnt even worn it! thankfully the repair is amazing - but it makes you want to try to protect everything as much as possible. I keep anti tarnish strips with my H silver........

My air pillows lost it's air. So I have thrown them out. Anyone know if I can get them? Alternatively, I'm thinking of buying nice little pillows/ cushions (maybe make them myself with silk??) instead.

Is it bad not to have the air pillows? Mine are all togo..so they hold their shape pretty alright.

I've seen them at stores that sell boxes, packing tape, etc. for moving. I've seen the same brand that Hermes uses too.

This is an important question.

I have seen Birkins damaged from improper storage. Skins like Barenia and Vache Naturel are particularly susceptible to color variations if the bag is stored all closed up, as it is when you buy it. I store my Birkins in a very particular way to avoid any color change to the front panel.
  1. Laying on the back to prevent any slouching of the skin.
  2. Flap tucked in to allow even air access to the entire front panel.
  3. Straps gently pulled forward, but not tucked in the glides, to allow even air access to the front panel and prevent glide marks on the straps.
  4. No lock or clochette dangling on the front or back of the bag to prevent scratches.
  5. In the dustbag with air pillows inside the bag.

Yes, this is what I do and why. Only difference is I use rolled up towels inside the bags, not the air pillows. I don't like the plastic touching the leather, not sure that it would ever cause a problem but I find towels are easier to conform into the right shape and size. And then I put the bag inside its cloth bag on a shelf in the closet. There are a few threads on this subject.

So not with the felt?

Hey there PurseInsanity!! Depending how big your closet is ... and how humid it is where you live... those would be the key factors in determining how you store your birkie babies!!

If you live in a tropical state/country then you need to have a dehumidifier in your closet. This will prevent the mold on your clothes, purses, etc. unless you have a/c.

This is a problem not only for Hermes but for all purse brands as well. I know a lot of people who had the interior of their Chanel 2.55 turn stickey and peel. Also the pockets stick to eachother and will rip when pulled apart. The nature of the beast...

I live in the NW and it rains quite a bit... however, I do have central air for my pugs (my babies) and it helps keep the moisture down in the master closet. I have all my Hermes bags in their boxes tucked with their pillows.

The bags that I purchased through resellers sometimes do not have the boxes... in those instances, I have them standing in their dust covers on the shelves.

These go for all of my purses.

Hope this helps!

Oh I forgot to mention.... if you store them in your master closet located in the master bathroom... Close the master closet door 24/7. Don't let the shower/bath moisture get in there. There are simple dehumidifiers, such as, "Dri air" that suck the moisture out of the atmosphere and collect in their little containers. This is only for additional assurance to closing the closet door 24/7. Also run the bathroom fans for awhile even after your done with the shower... need to get rid of that humidity in that bathroom b4 opening that closet door!

Things fashionistas have to go through!!! Oh well! :queen::happydance:

Thats a very useful note.. thanks for pointing it out

Thanks everyone! Glad I could give you ideas. Do have a look at PBC and Rockerchic's closets as they're fabulous!!! Their closets are custom made while mine is simply a spare room that I furnished with pieces from everywhere lol!

Sammyjoe - You're right! The two shoe stands were custom made by Guccigal's brother. They're fab and I love them!!!

kim mac - My shoe and bag cabinets are simply book shelves with glass doors. I have little feet so my shoes fit comfortably on slim book shelves ... and very cheap ones from Ikea (the Billy model). For the curtains and my cube chair (custom made), I chose fabrics from Designers Guild while my dressing table/mirror are antique Biedermeier pieces almost 200 years old. It took me almost two years to find the right Biedermeier table for my mirror and I'm glad I found one with the same wood and finish. They look like they were purchased together. The ceiling lamp is also an antique Art Nouveau piece by Elf.

thank you for the info. totally gorgeous and inspiring. i love it! best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and wishing you health and happiness for you and your family.
