How do you afford your bags and how many per year? Credit debt or millionare lover?

I"ll be turning 35 next week. I've no credit card debts but love buying designer stuff that is often over and above my monthly salary which is already pathetic as compared to my counterparts. Usually I'll pay a portion of the credit card bills for my stuff and my hubby settles the rest and he usually closes one eye to it like he's resigned to fate that he had married a philandering wife. In fact he pays for virtually everything in the family. The bad thing is though I/we don't have any debts to pay but neither do I/we have much savings because I've splurge our/my savings on watches and bags!! I feel that my spending habit made us unable to afford a car and at least a small private property. I have the most designer stuff amongst my friends yet most of our friends own cars and private properties and of course huge savings for their retirement. The other reason could be that both my hubby and myself have low salaries. I admit that I do deserve a knock on my head for not living within my means.

After reading most of the replies here and posting mine....I feel that I"m so 'poor' and so old! How in the world you who are in the twenties, being students and perhaps hold an odd job or two can own properties, cars, have investments, buy bags and stuff and still can afford to save??!!! Am I missing something or am I financially a moron??

I live at home and my parents paid for college and are paying for my law school. I drive my mom's old car. I take great vacations in Europe w/my parents about 3 times a year. My parents buy me nice clothing, shoes, jeweeeelry and bags but they 100% own me and know it. If they dont want me to do something, they won't pay for it so I can't do it bc I have 0% income.

40+ ... married ... six figure job ... plus, husband makes six figures ... adult children ... so we have disposable income.

I go through phases ... for a while I bought tons of clothing ... now I am in my handbag phase ... my husband would probably give anything for me to go back to the clothes phase!! LOL :)

Anyway, I buy one or two new bags per month (Coach, Dooney, MBMJ, Tory, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, etc.) unless I am saving for a "big" purchase like LV or Marc Jacobs.

I usually buy one bag/year. I love Hermes but I buy used because if I were to buy new it would mean that I could buy nothing else all year. Or I sell a bag to fund a bag.

I'm 23 going 24, working full-time at my dad's company and studying a college degree part-time. I usually buy my own stuff with my own salary, but my mum supports my handbag love and sponsors some of them (we share our bags anyway, so what's hers is mine and what's mine is hers). I'll buy bags with my own money whenever I could and share them with my mum too.

Other than bags, I don't really spend much... My clothes are usually from Old Navy, Forever21 and the like, which are fairly economical. My dad drives me to work (therefore I don't spend much on transport), and I work at a F&B establishment so my lunches are all free! :lawl: My SO isn't rich and has student loans to pay off, so I wouldn't like him to pay for my shopping.

I'm not in debt and only have a debit card. And for wiser/less costly shopping impulses, there's always Ebay and promo codes. :supacool:

Turning 24 around the corner :p I've been very bad this year; already bought my 8th and on the way to get my 9th high-end bag, but with this I do consider my collection to be complete and will not buy any more. Other than this year I actually have surprisingly good amount of discipline, and all ten purses in my collection come from eBay. I buy only what I will use, and bags are not what I spend my money on most, or clothes (I purchase only a few pieces a year, from lower-end designers to replace the ones wearing out); I throw down much more on books, recordings, and I love hats as an accessory even more than I like bags. The money towards my bags I get from selling things I don't need, and putting things on eBay for a profit.

I only purchase handbags when I have cash to do so. Bills and living expenses come first and I will not purchase with a credit card. I put money in my 401 K at work first and increase the percentage each year...I also have extra money taken out of my check for both state and federal so come tax time I can get myself something nice for working hard all year :yahoo:

This sure is an interesting thread. Kudos to the members who work hard for their bags and other designer items regardless of annual income. Coming here to brag about rich husbands and parents - well, that is just in poor taste. I'm 46 and have been working steadily since I was 16 years old. I know I wouldn't appreciate all that I have if my parents didn't instill a work ethic in me at such a young age. They met my needs, indulged some of my wants, and stressed the importance of personal accomplishment.

I would rather have some debt and the pride of taking care of myself versus be debt free and have someone else take care of me. The debt I incur from buying expensive bags only makes me work harder to pay for them.

^^ This. It is distasteful and comes off as very low rent.

I think it's hard to discuss this topic without being a little judgemental...

It's up to the individual. I don't like accepting gifts from anyone. I feel obligated. Even an SO, I would rather receive something heartfelt (a card, flowers) than an expensive handbag. I like working hard and then treating myself.

I have a lot of friends who "make" their boyfriends, SOs, etc. buy them items that they can't afford. It's up to them, but that's not me, never has been never will be.

22 college student my boyfriend is pretty well off so he feeds my purse addiction..haha ..i have about 13 handbags all designer but pieces i really took time to choose . I love louis vuitton and if i see a purse i know i can't live without i get it ...i may get a new purse once a month or every other month ..a girl can never have to many purses or shoes ..:-)

oh, forgot my stats:

27 - I own about 5 high-quality bags (mostly Chloe) and 12+ pairs of Louboutins, plus many other designers.

I feel as though my purse number is actually really low. But then again, there was a time when I was saving for a down deposit on my home where I had zero purses and shoes.

Glad to say though, owning a home is well worth it.
