oh, i've been bad lately, guys.... :shame: you'll see what i mean in a few days...

out of curiosity, at what financial point do the rest of you think you can clear yourselves to buy a bag? do you just pay with a credit card and pay it off eventually? or do you make sure you have an equal amount of savings before you plunge (i.e., if you purchase a $10,000 bag, you have saved $20,000 in the bank). i felt like the latter option would have been reasonable, but i wasn't very patient. i only made it to the point until i knew i had enough cash to pay for a bag... or, um, bags :blushing: :shrugs: that i'd be able to pay my credit card in full... as well as have enough money for one year of law school tuition, and after all that, maybe only HALF of the value of my bag(s) in my savings account. luckily i don't have kids, am not saving yet for anybody else's college tuition, yada yada, so...

how about the rest of you?

Well I have three different accounts. One is for everyday use, one is so called saving account and one is my "luxury-account". I´m a university student and I still have about two years left. I work way too much but I´m just too expensive for myself. Righta now most of my luxury-account is for my 3,5 week to Asia. In theory I could buy a bag (Evelyne, Picotin or GP) right now but I want to wait until I get my little inheritance my grandmom left me. Hmm.. Actually I didn´t even answer to your question. :p

allan, i didn't want to quote your whole entire passage, but it is BEAUTIFUL..... thank you so much for sharing!!! i love words that give substance to thoughts that have floated around in my head, but that i could never adequately express myself.

and by the way, i know you're not judging others on how the spend their money (or whether they wait or not for their desires) - but i still love the reality check your posts and that passage provided.

Eulalia, i have 3 accounts too! :p 1 everyday/checking, and 2 savings accounts. except my "luxury" account [has been] given more priority than my other accounts! i really hope that changes after these last 2 purchases. i need to stop... for awhile... :sweatdrop:

You're welcome. That's why I love Alain de Botton and Marcel Proust. They give words to my thoughts I can't express by myself.

Allan, that passage is wonderful. So much of the pleasure of buying scarves and other things I can't quite afford is looking at all the different designs, researching my options, and learning everything I can about them. I am getting that way with bags, and it will be a long time, if ever, before I buy my first H bag, but I know I will really appreciate it when I finally have it!

I´m really looking forward to see what you got!

Me too!

May I join this group??

I just sold my birkin a few hours ago to a nice local gal who saved her thousands$$ and is now the proud owner of the bag I bought from DQ who had it sent special from Duna in Rome. I hope she loves loves loves it. I found the 40cm to be delightful - it always had a good amount of space.

So, now I have to think about the next one. Right now I am thinking Birkin 35 Togo in Curry PH.

Glad to know there is a support group here!

Yes, you will.

BlueGenes, I think about this stuff all the time. :)

For me, say a bag I want is $7,000 - well in my mind...I better
have two things: something close to $20,000 in the bank, and most
importantly, what is my take home pay? If I am not working,
going any further is not an option. Of course, if anyone
watches The Suze Orman show and her Can I Afford It?
Segment, I probably would never be approved using this logic.
But that is because and rightly so, you should have things like
your retirement fund, wills/trusts, insurance, other investments
all in order before doing such things. The funny thing is
they show a bunch of luxury items to open up the segment -
one of them is a lizard Birkin. I didn't see that particular episode
to see if Ms. Orman approved or denied that request. ;)

miss_white_lily, I agree - make sure you have no debt. :)
(darn you, student loans) ;)

allanrjv, de Botton's quote is wonderful....I guess
we are SuperDuperResearchers. :)

gelbergirl, I didn't know that. I'm certain you will
get your curry Birkin in Togo leather with PH. :)

definitely if you are choosing between a purse or car or HOUSE...gotta choose the house. Just think after you put your money in an actual investment...no no not Hermes...You will always get a better return out of a house and then you can buy...MORE birkins! yay!

I think I'm driving mad...I have to share with you my rant...
At the beginning of 2008 I thought I could buy a nice vintage Kelly (all that I could afford) in one year's time, let's say beginning of 2009. Well, money bad luck is haunting me!
Every week, really every week, something happens to me so that I have to spend money I wanted to save for Hermes Kelly or rainbows: my PC suddenly didn't work anymore (I got it mended but today again it doesn't work), I lost my sunglasses so I had to buy a new pair, I had a problem with my car in the highway by night so I had to call the car service, stay out for one night, not to mention many other small accidents. To cut it short, I spent almost half of what I wanted to save for the Kelly.
I'm really loosing faith, also because I live in fear of what could happen tomorrow...
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share with you

The same thing happens with me. Whenever I save up for something, bad things happen and expenditures keep piling up.

The solution: spend more and don't think about money. It will come to you as it did to me.

Maybe. :p

But seriously, a nice dinner out, or a movie, or a new dress--anything that would make you think and feel that you're not worried so much about losing money would make the "bad luck" go away. Trust me, it works.

I thought about this solution too. Maybe a nice Ulysses might cheer me up and send away bad luck?:p
