What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Haha it’s mostly FOMO like here’s a chance to get “any bag” on the menu. I am a relative minimalist, so there is a chance it could be the perfect bag if it fits slightly more than a C WOC but its a gamble 😆

Edit: tried looking online for a size comparison between C Woc and MKII and couldn’t find but sounds like it might be similar

Edit 2: about the C Woc, despite being slightly less than the perfect size I’m still open to collecting more if the right design came along. So I think MKII would probably be in the same ballpark/kind of deal for me it’s just the “cost” of MKII doesn’t lend itself to casual collecting haha
As you are unsure of whether the MK fits more than the Chanel WOC, here are my 2 cents. I carry very little, but almost always the same items. I carry 1 pr of readers, a small Chanel zip around or Goyard card holder, small size iphone, possibly a car fob and sometimes, a pair of sunglasses and one lipstick. That's it. When I use my WOC, I put a cc and ID in the slots, then kind of "tetris" the items to fit, leaving the sunglasses out. Although I don't have a MK, I did put all my items in one in store to see what would fit. All my items fit if I used the cardholder instead of my small Chanel wallet. It was full, but they did fit. I think it's partly the sizes of items you deem necessary in addition to what you deem necessary. HTH.

I just realized you’re the client whose SA is super shady and has you opening and spending on multiple accounts for random bags and then doesn’t follow through. I’ve been saying it for months but you really need to report this SA and move on. I’m not sure why you are still believing anything he says. I doubt the SM will give you a SO as they are likely all already divvied out but you could try. Regardless, you NEED to report this dude.
My suggestion is not for the faint of heart, but if there was a promise, I would go talk to the manager. You can state you accepted a QB that wasn’t on your wishlist relying on the promise that you would have the SO slot this year, and that you wouldn’t have accepted the other QB if you weren’t going to get the SO slot.

I know that a lot of people are against it, but in my case talking to two managers in different occasions worked to my advantage. You can always be polite and explain how you felt.

In the case of my defective SO abroad, I am not sure who I spoke with because the store was changing managers and I could not find out who the manager was, but the person was very rude. However, it is in a country well known for having the worst and most entitled SAs, so…At the same time I learnt that my VVIP friend in another store had spent the equivalent in dollars of $300k and didn’t get two bags that were promised to her this year because the manager also changed in that store. The new manager came and said no, then she learnt one of the bags went to a reseller. We are definitely never stepping in the store again after the SO comes, and they won’t see a dime from me until then.

Of course see what works for you. I am the type that I don’t care if SA gets upset and whatnot, because I can just easily take my business elsewhere, I travel half a year every year. Some people have to stay in the same store, so it might not work for all.
Update: I sent a detailed email and met with the store manager today to discuss the issue. And amazingly, the SM offered me an à la carte order, with an appointment scheduled for Sunday! I'm beyond relieved and happy that things worked out in the end.

Thanks for the virtual support! It really gave me the push to go out of my comfort zone.

That is wonderful! I am really happy for you! ❤️ Hopefully you can move on from this SA after this?

Wow, I'm so glad to read this!! Congrats, enjoy your appointment!

Did you get the sense that they were going to do anything with the SA?

Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️ I'm thrilled to have this resolved. And yeah, I'm done with that SA. I actually told him not to contact me again after he was smirking at me while I was on my way to the SM it was pretty unprofessional! But now I've got a new issue to deal with, this other account of mine has a b/k pre-spend hanging around, guess I'll have to figure out what to do with that! 👀

Thanks so much! ❤️ The SM seemed calm and collected like she's heard it all before. She was apologetic, though, and pretty sure she'll address it internally given how nervous the SA was. Either way, I'm just happy to have my appointment sorted!

Trying to decide between doing MKII or K25 for SO.

Questioning whether MKII would be too small for me:
For reference, I have a mini roulis and chanel WOCs - I find the mini roulis capacity to be perfect for frequent use, but the chanel WOC is just a tad too thin/narrow to fit everything I need, not enough to get rid of the chanel WOCS but they don't get used as often.
Do you guys think I will regret a MKII? Really appreciate your thoughts :)

For reference, I have a Samsung S8 as well as an iPhone 16 and I consider those phones fairly small, but they really don't fit unless I take off the phone case and then just with my phone, it already feels like I shouldn't put more in the bag to not overstuff it. However, it's the cutest bag so I wear it more as an accessory than to carry my daily essentials.

It does fit "essentials." I do think it's a nice bag to have but it's just going to be a small bag. It's hard to get and I would have picked it as my SO if I didn't already have one. I ended up picking a K25 in sellier since I don't have that size bag and my K25 in retourne is a nice size that I like using.

IMHO and experience, there's no need to remind SAs of anything, SOs, bags, etc. if you have a steady long-term relationship. If you don't, then the only way to "remind" them is to visit+spend.
Mine seems to do well with reminders, I typically go monthly sometimes more frequently. She has “forgotten” before then gets me the bag days later once reminded. At least with my past QB being direct has worked well. Hoping to hear good new when I go next week but not too optimistic haha
