What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Where can I see historical SO menus?

Greetings,

I was recently scheduled for an a la carte (Special Order) appointment in a California boutique I will keep anonymous for now. The evening before my appointment I received a call from my SA telling me, it was being 'postponed' because of a new law voted into California? This was because of the dyes being used in the leathers, California has just passed a new law and until Hermes came to an understanding of how that affected them, a la Cart were being paused.

I was hearth broken of course, but what could I do? I kept my appointment hoping I could find another bag or something else. Because the SA also mentioned (in passing) that the boutique was supposed to offload their current merchandise for the year. I was hopeful. Sure enough, the following day, my SA then offered me a Kelly Maxi 42!! This was in the beginning of November and told me it was NOT going to be a quota bag because of the disappointment I faced, it "was a freebe".

I am beginning to wonder if this is true. I have not found anything regarding new laws that were passed about leathers or dyes in California. Has anyone heard anything about Special Orders or a La Cart's being put on hold in California?

Thanks in Advance for your insights.

You can believe your SA, but I believe clear is kind. This whole thing sounds weird? The SOs got paused at my store too and country wide as acrowcounted said.

Just be cool and wait for the opportunity again. Don't think about it too much. I understand it's disappointing and I'd be upset too but don't show it to your SA.

You can believe your SA, but I believe clear is kind. I don't think it's a Prop 65 thing but I'm not an expert. You probably will be able to place an SO order once your store gets them again.

Let's use our brains. The SOs share the same materials as regular bags. Why would they get treated with anything special?

We are dear friends, there will be a next time. Happy Thanksgiving!

Well her argument is that California isn’t importing ANY leather goods currently so Hermes doesn’t want to put its neck out to “promise” clients bags via SO when in theory they might not be able to deliver them in some unbelievable world where Hermes can no longer import leather at all within the state.

That seems a bit extreme and I feel that would be highly unlikely Hermes would be locked out of California. Hollywood would go insane! ;-D

I am in California also and my SA told me the same thing last month when I went in. I've been waiting for an etain birkin 30 and since it's only currently available via SO, she was going to offer me a slot. She then explained that it is a leather dye that is being banned in CA. Apparently, the other luxury brands would also be affected. My store will not be getting any additional bags until the issue is resolved by Hermes. My SA has been at the store for decades. I've been with her for about 10 yrs and she's always very honest.

+1 I've also got the same info from my store in CA. I was told my SO that I placed (and posted about earlier in this thread) was paused indefinitely until this is sorted out.

I got an email from my store's stock administrator saying that a Kelly Mini Sac - Veau Epsom has arrived, the only piece I can think of which is O/S is my HSS from 2023. However when I emailed my SA, he advised that nothing has arrived for me and that the stock administrator made a mistake in emailing me that. Has anyone experienced this?

I think the stock administrator probably will get in trouble for that, he’s probably new and did not know protocol. When SO bags come in, the stock person will unload deliveries and write the person’s name that corresponds to the customer number on the box. Then it’s up to the manager and SA to decide when the bag gets released to give it to the customer.

Ah this make sense, I think my HSS did arrive, but my SA is not releasing it until the new year. It's either because I have used up my quota for 2024, or they are waiting for the price increase to take place in early 2025, or I need to show that I am still going to be a client....spending wise. =/

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, exceptions for a third qb in a calendar year due to a SO arriving last, are exceptionally rare now, even for six figure spenders. I’m sure that’s it and your SA will contact you in January (though I’d be sooooo less than thrilled that my SA blatantly lied to me over nothing!).

Hello, does anyone know how far in advance stores are notified that your SO is arriving? A QB offer is on hold for me right now in case my SO arrives before end of year
Around two weeks, in my experience. (The stores gets a tip that the bag is being shipped from Paris. Then it’s up to the normal importation durations/shipping delays to determine how long until it arrives to your store.)

Bingo! You’ll definitely get your bag and it will be the current price as it gets scanned using the current ticket on the box, it’s really just a matter or time and spend.

Hello I just got a surprise a la carte and I have no idea what to do!

I’m deciding between a K25 Sellier and a b25 retourne.

k25 Sellier rouge h with a rose Mexico gold or gold interior chèvre brushed gold hardware. Stitching tonal

K25 Sellier black w blue saphir or gold interior chevre permabrass hardware. Light gray stitching.

Birkin 25 Retourne vert rosseau with gold interior brushed gold hardware. Tonal stitching.

I have a Kelly 28 Retourne gold w ghw
And a MK bleu navy with ghw and an etoupe Evelyn tpm

My concern on the rouge H Kelly is it’s not an all color bag but I’ve wanted a classic color like this for a while! Black Kelly seems so boring but cant deny its beautiful

on my wishlist is a Black Birkin 30 w PHW as well...

To throw it all out I could also get a Kelly Pochette but I think it’s a bit small.

thank you for reading this far..any insight appreciated!!

Hello all,

Thanks for your advice in this thread. I ended up going with a B25 with the below specs which I am very excited about!

Exterior: Etoupe mysore
Interior: Bordeaux
Naturel contrast stitching and permabrass hardware

For a bit of background you could do other color stitching with verso, but I couldn’t do all the colors. Maybe it’s by leather type? But I wanted to do rose sakura or mauve pale but they were not available for me.

Hello PF friends...I feel I have to check in here since I have been stalking this thread looking for hope :). I placed a SO (my first, and I am sure, only) back in late March 2024...and I am here to share...it ARRIVED, and I picked it up on the weekend! My truly lovely SA called me on the weekend to let me know it had arrived. I couldnt get to the boutiqe fast enough!!! 7.5 months- but who's counting?! :yahoo:
