What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Got my first SO offer and OVER THE MOON. I'm considering the following combos...anyone have any advice? I am DYING for a barenia but I dont know how I feel about it being a special order. I think I could just ask for a regular barenia combo...but feels like a waste of a special order and I love the classic barenia look! But I know I could be waiting YEARS for a barenia to show up for me..

For the black option...any thoughts between a sellier or chevre b25? this feels like it would be the perfect carefree bag! Thank you ladies for your advice

- Birkin 25 Sellier in epsom with rose mexico interior
- Birkin 25 in chevre with rose mexico interior
- Birkin 25 in Barenia Faubourg with??? interior
Barenia or Epsom

There was no menu, and as far as I remember, no leather limits except croc colors/combos reserved for VIP. So box, barenia, and all these other push offer leathers now were not off limits, as long as they could be sourced by the atelier (so your order was accepted easily if you chose the season's colors, but past colors were allowed as well as long as they still have stock). Also tricolor was allowed back then, so you can have 3 colors on 1 Birkin, for example.

The process was, you talked to your SA about a possible combination you like, your order was submitted to Paris, Paris says yes, no, or proposes a little alteration to your order so that they could accept it. Also, some minor alterations were allowed like an extra interior pocket.

Sample (notice the horseshoe stamp):

May I ask how you feel about your barenia + pop of color combo?
I am thinking of this as I just adore barenia. But I always loved its "plainness" and simplicity, even in the blind stamp. But I think barenia is on the SO list right now and its a dream for me (although id love smooth and I think its BF) so I'm quite a bit torn between this and a noir sellier b25 with pop of color  I could in theory do bf/gold interior and use that as my SO but that feels like a total waste, honestly haha!

Barenia is not an option for the B25.

Barenia is not an option for the B25.
Guess that makes my choice easy for me, then :crybaby:
It might be for the better, as I think I just want something classic in smooth and could wait a few years for it if needed. TY

Also argh seeing what you mean no - bf is not in any of the classic qb bags
Ah. It really does make it easier being devoid of choice

I run a 75% chance of having almost no time to choose an SO, as per usual, so my latest SO was no different. Of course, I always have an idea of what I would order for any given season, so it wasn’t that difficult (after deciding whether to do regular leather or Ostrich).

I REALLY like the iPad ordering, as that makes the process so much easier. DH was not thrilled with my choices (he expects that *every* order will be a pop color  ), but I have wanted a soft blue-colored bag for a long time, and this will be very elegant and versatile.

Ordered:
-25cm Birkin Sellier Verso
-Epsom Leather (Birkin Sellier SO is Epsom or Ostrich only)
-Rose Gold Hardware
-Exterior: Bleu Glacier
-Interior: Nata
-Contrast Stitching

Is the iPad ordering available at Beverly Hills? Wasn’t when I did mine a few weeks ago. Also your order sounds PERFECT!!! I would have done something similar if I already had a mini k in my collection

Sounds so elegant and lovely. I love Bleu Glacier, one of the best colors ever, and Epsom is the only reason I haven't ordered it. You're changing my mind
and it does work so well with B25 Sellier <3

Definitively possible in Paris (FSH). You can always order an additional strap via after sales in the 3 different standard lengths (70/85/105). No individual lengths like 120. The costs are around 700€ (for Epsom…maybe less for a Mini Kelly, probably more for other leathers).
For an older bag they might need the bag as well to ensure that strap and bag are matching.
I had earlier asked if anyone had info on ordering an additional strap and many kind TPFers responded.

Happy to report back that it’s indeed possible with FSH after sales dept and the cost is ~€4K for an exotic MK strap. Took about 2 months. Will collect soon.

No. Because prespend is not implemented worldwide, so it has nothing to do with that.

More to do with your first point: sheer number of people placing special orders, and Paris doesn’t want to approve/reject every single one of them. Orders are configured, and therefore approved, at the store level.

Also has to do with the expansion of Hermès Horizon. Previously it only dealt with real custom projects like car/yacht interiors, bikes, or bags designed from scratch. Now every bag (except Birkin and Kelly) that you want in leathers other than the ones offered normally (e.g. barenia, box, vache naturelle, volynka, etc) should go through Horizon. And bags going through Horizon are 3x more expensive than its regular price.
The good old days of Real SOs, now it’s just a joke🤬

Every time I see pictures of bleu glacier I can't look away. It's such a perfect, icy, moody mix of blue and gray, and I bet in a sellier birkin it's going to look so 👌 sharp. Congratulations!

Hey guys, I made a huge mistake on my special order. I made a mini Kelly which arrived and I chose 85cm thinking it's the standard length because when I did a Google search it shows 85cm and then jumps to 105cm. I guess what I didn't know is that that's for the standard Kelly, not mini Kelly. When I finally looked into it further, it turns out that the mini Kelly standard strap length is 93cm. My question now is... If I brought this issue to Hermes, would they be willing to re-make a strap for me in the length I want? Obviously I would be willing to pay. Thanks all.
