What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Has the new SO season started yet?

Hi, Does anyone know if rose Sakura chèvre will come back next year? Should u ask the sa if u can use your so on the year that rose Sakura will come back? Or will they make an exception to make rose Sakura in chèvre if you ask? Thanks so much!
They will not make a bag in a randomly requested color. It’s strictly by menu (please don’t believe any random “off menu” fairy tales if you should find one told to you here or on other social media. People lie to feel special. It does not happen.) Orders are placed by drop down menu selection on a computerized form. If a color code is not in the list, it is physically impossible for the SA to input it. Theoretically, a Horizon order would allow you to choose any color and leather, however they also will not make standard bags as a Horizon item so that would not work either. SAs will currently have zero knowledge of the 2024 SO list (assuming we are correct and it does not change until January). I would be shocked if Chevre Sakura comes back within several years as H just featured that color last year and likely 70% of the orders were placed using it. H tends to seek to avoid over saturation of any given item. Feel free to continually refuse SO offers until the menu matches your preference but it’s probably going to be years, if ever, imo.

So hope this the right place to ask this. Would you use a SO opportunity to make a hard to get classic but “regularly available” bag (like for some people craie K25 GHW or a black B25 RGHW) or would you make something truly unique but something “you,” like crazy inner lining and brushed palladium etc. I’m not concerned about resale value just that an SO chance is like, a chance to make “anything you want” including hard to get classics instead of waiting for those hard to get classics on my wishlist. Also I haven’t actually been offered an SO just wondering

I'm not one for crazy to begin with, but I'd probably take the opportunity to make something just a little different and special! For example, I love @mshup's new SO Birkin: classic enough to endure, but unique enough to be worth the SO effort.

First, some technicality: in the current SO implementation, it’s impossible to order a completely “regular” bag; you have to do something - stitching, lining (verso), or multico (bicolor). You can of course try to make it as close to “normal” as possible (e.g. not bicolor; do verso in styles that don’t often show their lining; choose a low contrast stitching and so on).

Now, if we are talking about whether you should make something obviously special or something very subtle, then I think that’s always completely up to you. It’s your SO. We have members who do SOs of the former type, members who do the latter and members who do something in between. There is no wrong choice, really! The one (and only) criteria imo is whether you will love and rock it.

p.s. I have occasionally heard an SA (and/or SM) steering their client towards doing something a bit more fun (maybe because they believe they can eventually offer the regular bag; maybe because they want the client to try something different that they normally won’t consider; or maybe it’s just their personal preference :P) but nobody will stop you from doing what you want out of the options available.

I’m also not crazy when it comes to colors so I just did something I would enjoy for the rest of my life! I was lucky to receive my first SO just two days ago and I’m so happy I went with the verso MK in Gris Perle ostrich (have always wanted something in Gris Perle and I went a little more “crazy” with ostrich as opposed to chèvre which was what I was initially going to do). I went with Rouge H on the inside and I feel like it’s just enough that it’s special to me without anyone else knowing. I live in an area where demand is high in general so waiting for the perfect combination is pretty rare so I personally went with something in between. Regardless, my recommendation is just to do what you want and something that will make you happy!

I see this question a lot and obviously the answer is personal, but what I would say is, let go of any thoughts of what anyone else would expect of a special order bag: "I should do multico so everyone will know it's SO", "I should do a crazy color combo", "I must do brushed HW" etc etc.
Create a bag that *you* will love and want to use and wear a lot, and that fits in with what you own/plan to own (like, if you already have or know you will have 70 Birkins, feel free to do chartreuse and Sakura, but if you plan to have exactly one Birkin, black with a subtle verso interior is still unique and will always be yours).
As long as it makes you happy, that's what matters.

I went for the almost available option. Birkin 30 noir in chèvre. Blue indigo or blue nuit inside ( can’t remember. Wanted Vert cypress but wasn’t available) no contrast stitching, but permabrass hardware. Which I have on my Kelly and adore. So just enough to warrant an SO but a bag that I will use forever and hopefully not grow tired of. Still waiting on it. 11 months and counting :panic:

Same here but even „more boring“ in other peoples eyes because I have chosen a Craie Kelly with Gris Perle interior, no contrast stiching and even regular gold hardware…but with a shorter strap which I prefer. For me she is perfect and who knows if and when I would have received her otherwise.
