Just received my new-to-me 1979 beauty when I discovered this crack on the sangle. I’m scared that it would get worse over time.

I’ve read on this thread a while back that the spa can replace sangles. Does anyone have the current price or an estimate of how much it would cost to replace sangles?

I’m debating if it is worth keeping after discovering this crack or if I should return it as it would be expensive to have it fixed.

That is weird.
How far does the damage penetrate?
If it is superficial, it could be camouflaged; but if a sangle replacement is required think of the time as well as the cost.
If it is an undisclosed flaw/blemish/damage
I would be inclined to return it.
Unless the price was very very attractive the financial and emotional cost of repair might well outweigh its attraction.

Thanks for your response. I’ll definitely take that into consideration. The crack is by the area where the sangle bends when the bag is properly closed. It is does not seem to go all the way back and is actually not noticeable if you didn’t know it was there.

I’ve contacted the seller and they are willing to give me a small compensation for the undisclosed flaw, or a return label should I wish to return it.

I did get it for what I believe is quite a good price. While it will be a two-hour trek for me, I am leaning towards bringing it to the NY Madison store this week and getting a quote. I do have a store a little closer to me (about an hour away) but I understand the Madison store has craftsmen/specialists in store.

Would anyone know how fast the turnaround time is even just for the quote? Is that something they are able to do on the day you bring the bag?

I doubt it would be fast. Madison would very likely send it back to Paris for evaluation and then the quote and repair time goes up from there.

JMO, the bag is close to 45 years in age & it is a beauty, but a sangle repair is expensive
& likely will have to go back to Paris which will can potentially be a long wait
If you can opt to return it I'd go in that direction & look for another bag
The marketplace is becoming chock full of vintage bags so likely you can find another bag in
better condition

Understood. Thank you! Your replies definitely put things into perspective. I might be better off finding a newer bag in better condition without a need for immediate repair.

A number of years ago I had a sangle as well as a new handle replaced on a vintage Kelly
that I had purchased & over time it needed repair
Besides being a timely repair, it was an expensive repair & while I do love the bag, would not consider
buying a bag that needed a sangle repair, JMO
As much as Hermes tries to match the color & the skins well, it always doesn't work out as we envision.

I think @Love Of My Life has given great advice.

I would add to the note that Madison and its in-house craftspeeps can do a lot of major repairs, but it is possible that something as serious as a sangle replacement on Box calf could be sent to Paris for assessment. Paris can take 2-4 weeks just for a quote. You could easily be looking at 4-6 months without the bag, or more.

Box calf GHW in vintage is not rare and you can find this bag without this flaw. Good luck!

Not sure slouch is an issue to be fixed, but no harm in asking. Perhaps try to store it with a bag pillow, archival tissue or ‘stuffing’ of choice or use with a bag organizer? ( I personally do not recommend one that presses against the sides to avoid stress). A retourne toile will ‘slouch’ more than a sellier which is its charm, and a larger bag will slouch more than a smaller one.
thank you . I will go in and ask, sometimes the SA at Hermes give me anxiety. I dont have a specific one, if anyone knows a nice one in the Toronto area let me know! :flowers:

I have a question! Would it be insane to buy this trashed bag for around 1k-1.5k, and send it in for repairs? Would they even fix it?View attachment 5966520
Not insane, but certainly an exercise in extreme patience as this bag would likely spend several months at Spa. What can be repaired is really at your discretion (taking budget into account) and the discretion of the craftsperson working on the bag. If the seller has more pictures, seeing those would help give us a better idea of what specific repairs the bag may need.

If I liked exotics I'd definitely take that on! Hermes should do it unless it's been repaired/repainted by non-H companies. If it's a very vintage bag, as it appears to be, that can be a distinct possibility. But I do think there are reputable third-party vendors willing to do it--the one I'm thinking of in California (but am unsure if I can say the name due to possible solicitation rules here) was an H artisan for over a decade. Good luck, I say take the gamble!
