With regards to claiming the tax back.. (for some reason im not able to quote)..

I had the same thing happen when i tried claiming the tax back on a Cartier bracelet as well.

My understanding is that yes, you will have to pay tax on the item when you re enter Australia, but as the item has been used, the item is valued at cost price less 30% depreciation.

I think the limit on tax free goods is $900 (or 1k) and you can combine allowances as well. So if it was your partner and yourself travelling, you're entitled to $1800 or $2k tax free. So if a bag was 10k, less 30% depreciation and 2k tax free allowance, you would only have to pay tax on 5k?

Is this correct? Can anyone clarify?

I bought chanel,lv and a few other items last year and managed to claim back the GST when I traveled out of Aussie. I don't think they will ask though... Hmmm...:thinkin:

Im the same. Ive been able to claim back tax on my lv and chanel bags previously, but had problems claiming back the tax on my cartier bracelet??

how come? did they give you the reason?

The first lady was going to do the refund, no problems - but then we realised i had the wrong receipt for my laptop which we were also getting refunded so went into the Qantas Lounge to print off the correct receipt.

Came back and got served by another lady who just said that because i was returning to Australia, I would have to pay tax on arrival anyway. She said the laptop was fine because of of depreciation and also the quota that we were allowed.

I have since done a bit of reading up on it and thats how i came to the conclusion above.. about the value at which they would assess the tax payable upon arrival etc.

Wish i'd known this at the time!

The refund officer told me all my stuff had been record , so I had to pay for tax if I carried them back. How they record this?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Seems a weird place to make my first post, but I stalk these forums all the time, so hey!

Anyway, I'd love to go into the Hermès store, or any of the luxury boutiques for that matter! (but particularly H) but it's so intimidating! I might walk past them tomorrow before school :P

I feel like I've seen an influx of birkins in Melbourne recently, probably because it's my first year of uni and I'm actually *in* Melbourne! I always want to ask if I can touch them haha, but that would be super creepy. Sorry, turning this into a birkin party, I love all the other Hermes stuff too, not that my mother would ever allow me to spend that kinda money!

Anyway, carry on lol!

SM said it would be here around christmas so I hope to hear good news anytime sooner
