@allanrvj, cheers to you for your reminder (somewhere in the many threads) that it’s ok to decline to comment on a post that’s ’problematic’. It’s an obvious option of course, especially if you’re an adult (sometimes I struggle with this ) but it’s awfully helpful to have you riding along with me, living rent free in my head, nudging me. WWARJVD? (What would allanrjv do?) :P
Yeah it’s very rare, especially online, where you say something and the other person says “you know what, that’s a really good point and I will change my opinion about it”. People generally don’t like being told they are wrong and would usually double down on what they believe is right.

Does anyone know what the lightest leather is? And the most durable? I am considering my first Kelly 32 or 28 and likely going vintage route. Thank you for your insight- it is a pleasure to read all the knowledge here (this is my first ever post so hopefully I didn’t botch it).

I confess it was a bit of a challenge to find this thread but I think it might be a good start for you. Lightest leather and most durable don’t necessarily go hand in hand; it’s often a matter of compromises. :flowers:

Hello ladies and gentlemen, just have an enquiry for those who has their B's. My B40 is about 6 years now and I recently have been using it more frequently going out and doing my day to day. So I notice on both ends of the spine of the flap, it appears to have some kind of breaking?? Is that normal for a 6year old B? How bout yours, do you notice anything like it? If you do have the same with your old B's then I guess it's just the normal deterioration of the material because I know it's 6 years already!!! Please please. Pictures attached. Thank you so much!!!!IMG20231120120052.jpgIMG20231120120144.jpgIMG20231120120248.jpg

Thank you so much. Actually I found that googling the question leads back to some great and very informative threads on TPF but actually searching within the forum is much harder. Really appreciate learning all this!

This happened to my B35 as well, but not my B30s or B25s. I think it's because the bag is much heavier? Though it is much more noticeable on my black B than the lighter coloured ones (or maybe it only happened to my black B!) Whatever it is, the same thing happened to my black B35 and it's about 5 years old ....

I would suggest that Epsom and Swift are lighter leathers,
As previously mentioned they may not be the most durable..I believe that Epsom may prove less prone to rubbing and scratches than Swift. The two leathers look very different so perhaps also look at both leathers and decide which appeals.
One is also very soft and the other more rigid.
I believe that Chèvre is also quite lightweight but I'm not sure so perhaps someone more knowledgable than me could help on this..
Chèvre is certainly very durable but again looks and feels very different to Epsom and Swift.
My advice would be to decide if you want Sellier or retourne, do you want structure or slouch and take it from there.

Good points & would also add "BOX" to your list if you are thinking of going the vintage route
especially in the size 32.
It develops a wonderful patina over time & personally next to exotic it is my leather of choice
in a Kelly.

Thank you for the insights. I do love Box but I worry that such a delicate leather will look beaten up. I have a vintage C18 in box and I love it, but it basically fits a hairpin and finest get knocked around. Also as @maxroxxherhandbags mentioned I am considering both the K32 and K28 size but need to decide between styles as well. For K28 I prefer the retourne but I think it looks sort of messy in the larger size. Of course it’s also hard to tell when you can’t really try before you buy, though I suppose I might stop by the real real store just to get a “feel” for things… thank you all for your insights!

I have a vintage K32 in box, retourne style. It’s from 1999 so it does have some wear but I think it adds rather than detracts from its character. Including one pic of it all neat and buttoned up and another of it open and casual…not sure if it is messy but definitely more relaxed.
