Sounds like they're twins. It's impossible to keep her calm unless you completely wear her out. And then she'll get bored with a toy or the way you're playing with it... and before you know it, YOU'RE dancing on the bed with four toys dangling, trying to get her to do flips and burn off some energy. The other day I shut us both up in the bathroom and tried to get her to climb the walls. I'm not kidding.

Sorry I was mia Jenni...missed your posts last week about the in laws. I would definitely get MIL seen by a neurologist that specializes in dementia-related disorders. Prior to that she should be thoroughly screened for the meds she is taking, hypertension, cholesterol, glucose levels etc etc. BAsically a good overall assessment. There are many diff types of dementia - alzheimers is only one. Also - when and if she is diagnosed there are medical treatments to help. First step is to try and figure out if she has arterial disease that is restricting blood flow or had a mini-stroke or whatever. Was she or is she a smoker? (increased risk of vascular disease). Does she get hypoglycemic? Once the problem is identified then the right treatment and support options can be put in place for both of them.

This is a lovely movie based on an alice munro story.

Hi Sally, She's already been seen by a neurologist (several times) who specializes in dementia-related disorders. She's done the 6-hour testing cycle, all of it. I just don't know if her PCP has done a screening for other causes. She's definitely on simvastatins for cholesterol issues, and we've talked about this as a family... their report back was that their PCP discounted that as a possibility at this point because benefits outweigh risks, etc. DH and I are going to push them a bit harder (or rather try to get them to push their doc).

She was set for a six-month follow up with the neurologist last month but canceled because they went to an Alzheimer's support group and it terrified her. So she's hiding.

Her current diagnosis is something along the lines of mild-to-moderate short term memory loss with no definitive origin and early for her age :weird:

Oh boy. I think she is bouncier than Ash. He'll focus on one toy for awhile but wants to play way longer than me. If I ignore him he'll walk right over and start chewing on Ember's head. He spent a chunk of last night on the top kitchen shelf in the wok watching me cook. This morning he got into the scones and then puked on my stuff. Good thing he's cute.

Jenny, I've been reading what you & your mother are going through. Sometimes it takes a VERY long time to rule out the obvious, then testing for anything & everything afterwards. My daughter had bruises at 10 - I was accused of abuse until 2 yrs later she was found to have a rare bone marrow disease. I was diagnosed with MS last year (om 48)after many episodes of tooth pain & walking as if i had too much to drink. The spot was so tiny, 3 neurologist missed it !! Oddly enough, your mother could simply be missing a mineral in her system....which is very difficult to test for due to diet, time of the testing & other things. Good luck, I'll be crossing my fingers your mom improves & that you hold your sanity -- especially with the holidays upon us.
You have lots of support with members of TPF ...Brenda

Brenda - MS is a challenge for sure. Hope you are getting the help and information that you need. Also, that must have been very stressful to be accused of abuse! Gosh...so much misdiagnosis out there.

And I can completely understand the feeling of Jenni's MIL wanting to hide - it must be so frightening. The ride she is on is not the fun kind. Glad she's been seen and is getting some care and support and that the family are advocating for her.

LOVE those plural collective nouns! :smooch:
I just taught that lesson in class. It's starting to creep into American English, thanks to younger generations watching soccer lol.

Hmmm - I've never heard of plural collective nouns...had to look it up. Maybe it is more common in Canadian English. Or maybe because I've been reading lots of Jane Austen to escape my overwhelming work life. And I'm reading Middlemarch again right now.

It's standard British English, so therefore standard Canadian, Australian, etc.
(Long live the :queen:)

I've always thought it was interesting because American identity is so invested in the idea of individuality, and yet we treat collective nouns as singular unless their meanings are clearly plural. It's a matter of grammar revealing something about ourselves that we don't want to admit?

Ah. Always up for grammar chitchat on a Saturday morning after grading all week :p

I'm reading Les Mis right now. :faint:

Those ornaments are totally Mish & Chloe!

I'm doing such a poor job of Christmas shopping. I still can't figure out what to get the guys at the office. My employees always just get a gift card now that I only have a couple and can give them a decent amount. I need a small something to pass out to everyone else that doesn't seem cheapskate style, but doesn't break the bank since there's about 40 people. I think I've got the girls covered, but I'm at a loss for the guys.

I've almost got family done. I have a few projects to finish up for family though. I need to stain a nightstand for my niece's bedroom and get a jeweled knob for it (I got bright pink stain today). I think I'm making a Kindle case for my mom out of a lime green lambskin hide I've had for a while. I also have knitting to do. I've been really bad about knitting this year. The dogs are not making it easier either, they think nothing is better than tearing apart a ball of yarn.

I think my puppies have the flu. I don't want to overreact and take them to the vet for everything, so I'm holding off, but they've been sick for days. The good part is they've been sleeping a lot, so they haven't been getting into as much trouble. They seem to be getting along really well and have even cuddled a little while napping. I can tell Violette "go get your baby" and she herds Poppy over to me.

MT - I hope the pups feel better soon! Your xmas gifts for the family sound great.
I still have to get my act together.

The critters survived their annual vet visit this week. They were pretty pooped after the shot - rabies shots aren't mandatory here but we always get them.
