This is incredibly helpful and the visuals are the best! Thanks so much, CB, for walking us through a rather scary process! Does this work for cashmere shawls as well?

Thank you for the pics and the discriptions. Very helpful!
I have one question about the ironing. Without steam and the low heat for silk they sometimes don't get really 'silky' anymore esp. the Losanges? Any advice?

Thank you CobaltBlu for this fantastic thread! You are a domestic Hermès godess, thank you for giving courage and confidence!
Your silk painting skills are amazing too...I'd love to see more!

Great thread CB! Just what I needed to help build up my confidence for my first attempt at washing. The pics are really helpful to get an idea of the amount of colour bleeding into the water.

Always the weirdo here, but I wash my scarves using my Jonathan Product moisturizing shampoo!! Yes, SHAMPOO. It doesn't have any sulfates in it so it doesn't strip my hair color. I started thinking that since it doesn't strip my hair color it shouldn't affect scarve dyes.

One day I got brave, filled the sink with cold water, a squirt or two of JP shampoo, swished an older pocket square as my guinea pig, rinsed the devil out of it with cold water. Voila! Good as new. No, actually better than new: my scarves come out so soft and clean. :tender:

Hey so last night I washed a "dry clean only" silk skirt using your scarf washing method and it worked perfectly! I was soooo worried that I would ruin by skirt, especially when I pulled it out of the bowl and it was all bunched up, but after I layed it on the towel and rolled it up it looked fine. I left it hanging overnight and it doesn't even look like it needs to be pressed.

I'm impressed. You're going to save me tons on my dry cleaning bills!

^^^I've always heard that it's not a good idea to dry clean silk anyway. There's something about the chemical damaging the natural fibers in silk that's not good for them. I NEVER dry clean silks unless it's something structured like a jacket or is a dress with a lining in it. I'm such a renegade that I even put a lot of my silk clothing in the washing machine. :wtf: I use gentle cycle, cold water and depending on what it is, I may put it in garment washing bag. Then just air dry, iron on low heat as needed. Good as new and NO dry cleaning bills.

You're a total rebel Prada.

I am so glad this thread is helping!! I know I owe you more pictures, but I wanted to steam the scarves I washed and I didnt get around to it...

but now that this thread is up on page one again, I promise I will finish it off, with the pictures of the H and a couple that I painted, too...

Prada Psycho, you are right, the dry cleaning chemicals are hard on the protein fibers in the silks. That is why your shampoo worked well, also, and I can imagine that a good shampoo would have the same effect as a good silk wash...as long as you are not stripping out the proteins, the silk will remain "healthy."

I think its great that people are wearing and washing their scarves!! YAY!

CB, I don't know about the quality of my water, so could I use distilled water?

Absolutely. Does your water smell of chlorine? Do your clothes fade even in cold water? Some cities have more chemicals in their water than others...

sorry this reply is so late, Kallie Girl!!!

Thanks so much for all your effort in taking the pics and the detailed instructions! It's really helpful! I've always had my scarves dry cleaned and never knew it's not good till I read it here but I really wouldn't have the faintest clue how to hand wash them, you're a star!

I don't live in the US, so this LeBlanc stuff is available at the supermarket? I'll see if it's available here if not, I'll have to get some when I go to the US next!

So what about the cashmere scarf? are they safe to go to the drycleaners?
