Oh I'm so glad to see this thread -- I just purchased a scarf and it is (to be kind) pretty stale and stained. Part of my "bidding under the influence" and "gee, I need to cheer myself up" frenzy. I want to keep it and wear it, but it definitely needs some TLC. Will be checking in for help from the posters who've done this successfully.

I've washed several silk scarves, though too chicken to try H. I started several times and backed out.

This time I DID it! Thanks Cobalt!!!

And I washed a mousseline - my FAVORITE one! Got tired of not being able to wear it and dry cleaning fluid smells make me cough.

And I think it turned out great! Will know for sure tomorrow.

Thanks to the instructions on this thread and a couple of others, I've successfully washed many of my scarves. I even washed my red Ispahan (43 years old!), which did bleed, but I used a couple of the Shout color catchers and there was no color transfer. And now they are so soft! Many thanks to CobaltBlu! (And I still want to see Part II of this thread, if only to ogle Mosaique in all its pristine glory...)

Okay Cobalt - I've washed and rolled in a towel. Better hurry up with the details of pressing, etc! :D

Thx for this thread! (and for whoever revived it; sorry, didn't get through entire thread).

Pressing is the most important part of this process!
Posted in MaiTai's H-It-Up, but here's a brief summary:

Assemble following stuff: iron set at lowest setting, clean flat bedsheet--folded to accommodate your scarf, large flat surface that can accommodate the entire scarf (large dining table or floor; I recommend table to prevent a backache)

(after rolling the scarf in a clean dry towel to remove excess moisture)

(a) Place bedsheet on the large flat surface. It should be several layers thick to serve as a "pad" for the damp scarf.

(b) Place the scarf, wrong side up, on the sheet. Smooth out crinkles/wrinkles.

[optional] To add some extra body to moussey's, I spray a light mist of "Magic Sizing" spray starch to the wrong side of the scarf, just before ironing.

(c) With iron at lowest setting, iron from center just up to the edge. Avoid touching the iron to the rolled hem. Work quickly/steadily until the entire scarf is dry.

NOTE: The key here is to remove moisture via the ironing process; not via air-drying. This is esp. important w/ mousseys, which will shrivel up into crinkles if ironed or steamed when dry.

Good luck! (it's scarey as heck the 1st time; EZr the next, and no solvent odor to irritate skin.)

p.s. some on TPF report their dry cleaners use supercritical CO2 for dry cleaning. (similar stuff used to decaffeinate coffee.)

GREAT THREAD!!!!

so i wear one of my five LV bandeaus on most days and the white one was becoming very dirty so i tried this last night. for those of unfamiliar with the white multicolore, its a white background with LVs, and flowers in 33 different colors including black and deep royal blue and purple...

but i hand washed it, though i used clear method hand soap... (i have used hand soap before as a pre-treater and stain remover for all fabrics and even some leathers... so thats what i chose... on and i used the roll towel than hang for drying. i didnt steam iron because i dont know where mine is... :sweatdrop:

i posted this on the LV forum but thought the images belong here too...

these are the after pics, of handwashing scarf with white background and 33 colors in the foreground...

I am so happy that I came across this thread....thank you to all the ladies for bumping it. I do have a scarf that desperately needs to be cleaned before I can wear it, and this now gives me the confidence to handwash it. Thank you very much Cobaltblu....:flowers:
