Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

To be honest, neither the Bays nor the Roxanne is completely off of my list...you see, I keep two lists: one very long list that I keep on my computer in a file, and the public list in my tPF signature - the tPF list changes constantly (I have come to terms with my ever-changing mind), but the other one is more stable. They generally overlap a lot.

And I think it's very cool that you have decided what works for you - your bag collection sounds like it really makes you happy and works with your lifestyle - and that's the whole point! :D

What a sweet thing to say! You are very kind, Loquita. ;) If only you could convince my husband of that, that the bulging don't-ask-don't-tell closet really does serve a cosmic purpose.

Now if you were to tell me that you have a database manager helping you to maintain that private catalog then I would really worry about you!

You took the words out of my mouth, sister! :p

I'm kind of getting tired of selling stuff, even though I still have a bit of way to go. Anyone else feeling a bit weary?

Me, I'm getting tired of it too. I've got 3 to go and then hopefully I am done for the time being.

I recently read a finance article online about being on a "Hedonistic Treadmill" where we buy things (bags for me) and we get the "thrill" from making the purchase but when we receive it, the thrill has passed and we are looking for something else to give us that "thrill". When reading this article, I thought, "This is totally me!!!" Am I the only one?

I too am kind of tired of selling...I moved 4 from the bonz to the bay as they have sat for a while on the bonz...so I just want them to move and I think I am taking a break for a while!

I listed 2 more bags yesterday and relisted a 3rd due to nonpayment : ( A 4th has been listed for a while. Besides that I have 2 more to list. And I’ve sold 2 smaller bags and given 1 bag and 1 wristlet to my sister. I totally hear all of you on getting sick of all this – more sales would help :p

I’m, however, now toying with the idea of a more drastic purge. Once I finish selling, I’ll be down to 8 bags and 4 smaller/evening bags, but I have 3 bags and 1 evening bag on my wishlist, which would take me to 11 and 5 (though not any time soon – I only plan to buy 1 bag in 2010). Not a lot by some standards, but I’m starting to think that’s too many for me.

5 of my bags are different versions of the same style. While I love them, this seems like overkill, so I may sell 2-3 of these. Of these:
1. probably irreplaceable – haven’t received yet (ordered late 2009 & will hopefully get soon), but less than 10 were made. Can probably better make up my mind once I receive.
2. very rare and I love it, but not sure I’ll ultimately get enough use out of it to justify keeping it. I *think* I could find this again if I regret selling it, but would be even harder to find in good/new condition.
3. could probably be replaced if I regret selling it, but it’s also one of my favorite and most used bags. It’s however very similar to another bag of mine which I will never sell (both are black with brass hardware).
So I’m a little hesitant on these 2-3, but I’m considering doing the hiding trick to see if I miss them and then slowly selling them off and hopefully not regretting it! That would leave me with just 2 versions of this style, which are my two favorite bags, leaving me with 5 bags and 4 smaller/evening total. I also could use the funds in addition to my other sales to finance my one new purchase for the year (already have one in mind – I just need my stuff to sell!!!). Sorry – lots of detail, but I think talking this out helps me!

It will be really hard to trim these, but I think that 6ish bags right now is a better number for me, especially as I’ll be moving this summer from a house to, most likely, an apartment in the city (so less space). And hopefully even less = using all of them regularly. Related to that, I need to do another purge of my clothing (which it seems like I’m always doing). I need to think out my clothing purchases like I’m trying to think out my handbag purchases. Too much stuff!

Hee hee!!!! :lawl:

Actually, the list is only about 10 bags long...and I fully realize that I will most likely never own most of the bags. But I am okay with that. :smile1:

I think that many, many of us are on the Hedonistic Treadmill. I would go so far as to say that the consumerist society in which we live actually encourages this dynamic. Think about it - companies that don't report a larger profit every single quarter are considered to be underperforming, so for them to be "successful" we all have to keep buying, all of the time (whether we need to or not). We are encouraged to buy in a million little ways, everywhere we turn.

Sorry about the non-paying buyer. I hate that!!! (So far it has not happened to me, though - but I have had a few people that I have had to sternly "nudge" repeatedly and threaten reporting to ick-bay in order to get them to pay). Beyond annoying.

And no need to apologize about talking through your plans with us!!! That's what this thread is for. ;) You sound like you are right on track - and that perhaps the hiding trick is in order. Why not give it a go? It can't hurt!

I am starting to come to the realization that while I started this thread saying that I wanted to pare down to 3 bags, that was unrealistic for me. Five is much better, and if I include an informal bag in there, then maybe six. But the jury's still out on that number.

I am excited to see what your 2010 purchase is going to be. I bet it will be stellar! :yahoo:

I cant imagine selling off my entire collection for just one bag...I find it hard selling one to fund another!! 6/7 of my current bags I cant bear parting with, the 7th is an ongoing battle of wills, iv ummed and ahhed about selling it so many times!!

Hi oggers! Honestly, you have such a fantastic and perfectly edited collection that I wouldn't be able to sell off anything, either. :smile1:

Did you decide to go for the Sally after all? :graucho:

Lol no im still undecided but i have like a whole yr and a half to make up my mind, i will not buy either the sally or the chanel ideally before i turn 25 next october (2011) but then again if i decide on the sally and itl end up out of stock by then il have 2 rethink!!

I think you should keep those three bags you mentioned.. they seem very special! Maybe your special number is 11/5. If you can't seem to part with anything else, then keep it the way it is.

I need to do a purge of clothing as well... just did it a couple months ago but it feels like my closet is starting to burst again(think scene from shopoholic).

I listed a few items last night too, 1 bag, 3 slgs, and 1 pair of shoes. I hope they move! Sales are so slow!

yeah, it's tough! it's possible that 11/5 is my magic number in that it might be hard to part with more, but i feel slightly overwhelmed and like i'm not getting enough use out of them. but selling all 3 might be a stretch. i half hope i won't bond with #1 once it arrives. i'm not going to rush into anything in case i regret it.

hopefully sales pick up once people start getting tax refunds!

thanks! i think i'm definitely going to try out the hiding trick. it'll also be extra motivation to take out some bags that haven't seen sunlight in a while.

my needs and goals keep changing too - it's more of a fluid process than i expected.

i'm super excited for my purchase too! i'm hoping i can make some more sales and get what i have in mind before it sells out! but i guess if it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be...and i have some back up ideas as well. :graucho:

I like the way that you take your time with these decisions...I could learn something from you! I would love to have a red Sally myself. There's one on ick-bay now that has me in a tizzy, but I have to stay focused.

Spill, woman, SPILL!!!

I bet that either plan A or plan B contain the initials "BV"...(and those are some beautiful initials, if I do say so myself). :tender:
