I think you should gather up all those extra books, sell to Half-Price Books or some similar store, and put the money toward an Amazon Kindle! Lots of books, very little space!:D I'm completely addicted to mine.

I have been obsessing about a Kindle lately, especially since I have a couple of trips planned and the idea of having all my reading material on such a smal device is tempting. Good to know you like yours.

In bag related news, I sold something today!!!
Yay for you for selling something. :yahoo:

I am fascinated with the Kindle talk around here...:graucho:

I have TONS of books (I am a college professor and writer, after all) and I don't pay for most of them, either - so it's easy to accumulate. I am WAAAAAAY more attached to books than I am to bags. However, I do not keep multiples of any books. I donate them to the library and to my students who don't have money to buy textbooks for their classes.

And congrats to you, thedseer!!! :yahoo: I am excited about your great news!!!

I actually sold another bag the day before yesterday, and now have one left to sell that's mine, plus one for a friend - and my friend's bag should be sold shortly, it appears.

I really love mine. I would go so far as to say that if I had to choose between my favorite bag and my Kindle, I'd have to really think about that one! I just love the freedom of having several books to with me, being able to search and download free sample chapters online, no matter where I am (except on a plane) and checking out the latest book reviews. :smile1:

Coming from one handbag lover to another what you just said was SO refreshing to hear.

I LOVE books!!!!
Thanks for giving me the motivation I needed to buy a kindle for myself. I"ll let you know my thoughts when it arrives.:smile1:

Hi Lo! Thanks again for creating this thread. It gave me the gentle nudge I needed to start my purge process and now theres no stopping me these days. And does it feel great. Here's to buying a kindle instead of another bag!! xoxo

Lo and thedseer--congrats on your continued sales! Woot woot!

The Kindle is a must have, in my opinion, for anyone who loves to read. I love the feel of a book in my hand, but the Kindle has been fantastic. So easy on the eyes--a completely different experience than reading on a computer screen--and extremely light. It's my American Express card--I don't leave home without it!

I'm continuing to read this thread with interest. I will say that this thread has helped me better define what works with my lifestyle and made it easier to help me let things go. What has been really interesting is that I've actaully been drawn to a couple of styles that turned out to be quite inexpensive. Great leather, very durable but little bank. I love it!

I'm glad to hear that you ladies like your kindle!! I've always debated about getting one of these... i love to read as well, and somehow to manage to always get more books than i can possibly read. the only problem is that my eyesight actually worsens after reading small print for a while. i have to continuously take breaks and wear magnifying glasses. i love the kindle has an option to enlarge the print. my main hesitation was the "feel" of it... nothing beats holding the actual book, but if the screen is easy to read, then you've got me convinced.

congrats Lo and thedseer. yay! i sold a mid-range bag today too, and another bid on a lower priced bag that will end on Sunday. sales aren't so bad this week after all!

Some great food for thought in this thread. I need to get to my books as well, just have too many for a small NYC apartment.
Besides donating, I also list my books on bookins.com and paperbackswap.com which are book trading sites. you get a credit for each book that you ship out(buyer pays shipping) to use toward another book. all you pay is shipping. i know those who are environmentally conscious don't like the idea of shipping books, but they use USPS media mail which is more economical.

thithi, I have the same question as you do about the Kindle. I have horrible eyesight and it's getting worse (I was the 6 year old with glasses).

But what TM is saying about it being easy on the eyes has me intrigued...especially since I often want to carry a book with me but don't want to lug it around in my bag.

Congrats on your sale, thithi!! It looks like things are picking up for everyone!!

^ Lo, I hear that the kindle screen is almost like reading regular paperback paper.... not too bright and you can adjust the size of the font and the contrast. That's a huge plus for me, as some of the books i like have tiny print and are nearly a thousand pages a pop. I just wish the price would drop a bit. $250 seems hefty to me, on top of having to pay for books. I know there are some free books available and bestsellers are $10, but it's the money up front that is making me wait. I'm hoping it will go down this year.

I haven't been in this thread for a while ,but your wonderful ideas have not been forgotten. I have sold quite a few bags since I was last here. I only have one coming in. I found I love my collection but some of them can't go to the kids events . So Dh is getting me a funky inexpensive bag for V-day, that I won't stress out if somebody knocks it off a bleacher. He hasn't offered to buy me a bag in years, but even he noticed how much empty space I have on my bag shelves. My only concern is when the bag comes I can not return it ,if it does not suit. I exchanged a bag he bought me because the zipper stuck and another because it was damaged and he has since been afraid to buy me one.

That's a great idea! Thanks. And congrats to everyone on the bag sales.:yahoo:

Agree wholeheartedly with your views on the Kindle--I so love to have books instantly available. When I'm buying a bag, "adequate size to to fit the Kindle" is a non-negotiable!

I'm holding out on the Kindle until I see the iPad irl. It should have the Kindle app available on it so I don't want to be redundant and have both in my bag.

There are people asking about my bags but not buying. Sigh. I've been having good luck previously so I guess this is a temporary lull...

^ sorry to hear that!! maybe it's just not the right time... thanks for mentioning the ipad... i might wait to see how it affects the e-book market.... maybe the prices will drop with the competition.

^^thanks for the support. I find when selling sometimes something doesn't sell, and then another time, it sells really quickly! I just hope that I don't lose patience with the online market and keep hope!

Yes, I anticipate kindles will go down in price when the iPad is launched, since it is introducing its own platform for ebooks, in likely addition to having the kindle app for iphone/ipad!

Hang in there on the selling. I have an item that isn't moving right now either. There are so many really great bags that have been languishing for some time; I think it is more the current time period and economic climate than anything else.
