Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

I've traded up the proverbial designer bag ladder, starting off 'small'...selling things off, buying one higher end designer bag...so and so on.
I swear, hundreds of bags have passed through my hands in order to 'go up' in the bag world.
But ultimately, I end up selling the ones I worked so hard to attain in the first place!
It was like a game for me but now it's lost it's appeal.
I am all for purging.
Purging is the best most freeing feeling in the whole world.
Scary, but freeing.

I'm thinking about a similar process with my scarves....just keeping the ones that really suit my needs and taste.

I currently have 9 on the chopping block. I don't want to admit how many I have, but it's a lot!

Somebody made a point in another thread--forgive me as I don't remember who it was--that sometimes people get really fixated on something (in this case, bags) because there is something else that is lacking in their life. There is no challenge or other passion driving them and this behavior can serve as a coping mechanism to get through that period. It makes a lot of sense. It can be a distraction at times, and then when the crisis or event is over, one is left with all these extra bags, some sense of guilt and frustration and the cycle continues. Just food for thought.

I read an article YEARS ago about a woman who had a nephew who loved his Hot Wheels. He had only a few but he played with them all the time. She became fixated on getting him more and more and then he stopped playing with them. She asked him why and he replied, "I just don't know how to love so many cars." Pretty smart for an 8 year old, I think.

great post, thank you ITA with this

Wow - excellent posts, TejasMama and ecmf!!!

Wonderful food for thought. I am truly trying to work this approach into my life, and it makes me far happier. I would rather own less but have it mean more. Compiling a huge collection of anything is pretty stressful!!! (And that's against the point in the first place, no?)

thank you, ITA and you will love working this approach into your life as it does make you happier

I've considered selling bags to fund another but I don't think I could ever go through with it. It would be too sad and each bag has it's own story of how I got it. I've heard too many stories of people missing their bags after they've sold it, so that's enough to put me off.

I'll just stick to saving thanks ;)

Cookie I can relate to your feelings here over worry that you might miss your bags. But I can share with you my own experience. I too wondered if I'd miss my bags a little especially since most of them had very little resale value so it almost felt like I was giving them all away on some level. Even so what I found was selling these bags was a wonderful experience for me and heres part why:

- The ladies that I sold/gifted the bags too are enjoying them which makes me happy.

- I totally outgrew these styles so I felt guilty they were just sitting there in my closet not being enjoyed by someone.

- Even though it was a small amount I received from the sales it still made me feel great about my next handbag purchase.

- I love having a smaller collection. For me it feels empowering. For instance, the other day I noticed that I could use a cream colored bag for summer. Before I had too many bags in my closet to even notice what I needed if that makes any sense....

It was a little scary purging SO many of my handbags in the beginning. But once I got started I wanted to do it more and more. Purging became what I was being attracted toward instead of buying.

And I don't miss any of my bags so that by itself tells me everything. Even the other night I found myself in my closet wondering what bag could go next!:smile1:

I think you should gather up all those extra books, sell to Half-Price Books or some similar store, and put the money toward an Amazon Kindle! Lots of books, very little space!:D I'm completely addicted to mine.

That's good to know about the kindle. I"m glad your enjoying! My daughter has one and I found myself asking her last night "do you mind if mom borrows it?". LOL

My book club just sent me the list of books were reading over the next few months so I was thinking this could really come in handy soon....

I really love mine. I would go so far as to say that if I had to choose between my favorite bag and my Kindle, I'd have to really think about that one! I just love the freedom of having several books to with me, being able to search and download free sample chapters online, no matter where I am (except on a plane) and checking out the latest book reviews. :smile1:

Yikes……a book purge! Something I need to do but have been avoiding. Between just plain liking to read and also doing undergrad/grad in English, I have A LOT of books! On the plus side though, I stopped buying new books a while ago.

In bag related news, I sold something today!!!
