Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments and wise advice!!! :hugs:

I agree with the comments about the black Bays - I adore the style but it is too close to my YSL hobo. My goal has always been to get 3-4 bags tops:

- 1 black hobo (my YSL: mission accomplished!)
- 1 red bag (muahahahaha....mission also accomplished!) :graucho:
- 1 other bag...and as thedseer knows, I am a major fan of crossbodies...so the leopard Alexa it is!!! :yahoo:
- May still get the LV Neverfull as an everyday tote...am considering the mono and the damier (thanks for the suggestions, maria & Janine!!) ;) But I am not in a hurry on this one, so I will likely wait a few months before getting it. I have tried it out and do like it a great deal.

I called the Mulberry store in NYC this morning and checked up on the oak leopard Alexa supply (the bag was officially released today in the US). They won't have the size I want for at least a few weeks, which is fine since I can save up a bit more between now and then.

Now aren't you going to ask me which red bag I just got?

Loquita...I would go for the ALexa... The bays is too plain and you already have a plain black bag... just kidding... it would overlap with the hobo imho.
The neverfull looks like a very practical bag. Personally, i would choose damier over monogram. It is more stylish and a bit less common than the later.
Have you considered the LV Bloomsbury? It is a lovely messenger style...
Keep us posted...

I hadn't thought about the Bloomsbury! I will go check it out right away, thanks! ;)

Although I think an elite designer is definitely worth the price you pay in cash... I have my hesitations about selling several of my bags for one in return... even if its amazing. I tend to get bored easily and love to be able to switch out my bags and spice things up... wear something different everyday (or at least as many different things I have before repeating haha) so for me... that would seriously cut down my selection of handbags and my variety, probably annoying me at some point because of being bored with my smaller selection.

Just a thought! But like I said in the beginning... an elite designer bag is always worth its price in cash... and I have to admit it makes you feel awesome too :)

Awesome thread, ladies! So insightful you all are.

Gots me thinking..

Your opinion, please?
I wanted to have a small collection, too. Is 7 too many? Or maybe you'll say that depends.

My story is that I always carried super cheapo purses. Just had nice shoes. All these years and never a designer bag.

So I set out to buy a few, and have a really nice but small collection. The precious ones. Bags that are "to die for" to me, ones that I'd be really excited about.
In the last few months I found some bags that I felt I "couldn't live without".
(And I joined TPF.)

7 is the total- a few preloved ebay ones, a few retail.

The purchases are so new I could still return them. Haven't carried the two I considered returning.

I have buyer's remorse but it could be because before this, I never ever spent any money on a bag at all.

How to decide??

(BTW they are all classics so I know they'll last..
and well made: Chanel, LV, ..ouch :)

^ I have 8 and I consider it a small collection, but by most people's standards (mainly my family and friends it is large). Do you love the bags? Can you afford the bags? If yes to those 2 then I say keep them. If you do not love them than return or sell. That is what I judge my collection on.

You are so brave Loquita! I'm thinking about purging a few from my collection to go after a YSL easy. I've only seriously started collecting purses from Nov 08, but now my collection has grown to 17 (going on 18). I think there are at least 4 bags I very rarely wear and can bear to part ways with.

My crutch is that I've never ever sold anything before and am pretty apprehensive about dealing with ebay/bonanzle and similar sites! I've had experience buying, but I've also heard and read quite a few horror stories about being on the other side of the deal. I've also thought about going the craigslist route since I'm in NYC, but that too scares me a bit.

I think 7 is a good number. That’s probably about what I’d ultimately like to get down to, though in the near future I see my number hovering a bit more around 10. Until recently, I was similar in that I would only have a couple of cheapo purses at a time, wear them until they fell apart or until I got sick of them, and then I would replace them. Then I bought a nicer one, then another, then I joined tpf and it all went up/downhill from there!

On the one hand, if you can’t live without them and if the 7 are well thought out (which it sounds like they are), then it sounds like you made good purchases. It takes a little bit of courage to make the transition from carrying a $10 bag to carrying one that’s hundreds (or more) dollars. I was always worried about damaging it, losing it, etc.

On the other hand, it sounds like you bought them all very close together. Speaking from experience, it’s a big sticker shock to go from carrying cheapo purses to designer purses; buying multiple close together increases the shock even more. If you are unsure, you could try returning a few. Since it sounds like they’re classics, they should still be available in another month, or another year. That would also give you time to use the other ones, to determine what price you’re comfortable paying and where there are gaps in your collection. I’ve received bags before, not been 100% happy, waited too long to return it, and then sold it later on at a loss. Most of the time you can always buy that bag again if you regret it.

Other than that, I’d say enjoy your collection. It was hard at first to stomach paying so much more. But a $800 classic looking purse that I could still be carrying 5, 10, however may years from now doesn’t seem like as much money when I think about all the $30 purses that I’m not buying over and over again after they break or go out of style.

"Muwaahahaha"? Spill it Lo!!! What did you get?

I see you have already made your choice but I'll just put in my $.02 anyways. I have never really thought of myself as a "logo" gal but as you know I have an LV Monogram Galliera PM. Durable, comfortable and very lightweight!! And strangely I don't find that it clashes like I thought it would. I think the Neverfull would be a great piece for you to own...classic style that will last you for years to come. And if the Mono is too much I agree try the Damier..a subtle classic pattern that doesn't scream LV.

Can you see yourself carrying them? Do you love them, or are you just somewhat fond?

Do you like them because what they "mean" or because they fit your lifestyle?

If they are the right bags for you, keep them. If they aren't - return them, and buy the right bag later.

Don't think about the cost. Just think about the utility. Do you smile when you see the bag? How much is a smile worth? Live is too short to own bags you don't love.

Wow, such great replies!! Thank you ladies!

Fashion mom, great questions. I'll ask myself those.

Theedseer, yes! I can totally relate to what you shared about yourself. Yes, I guess part of the sticker shock was going from $10 (literally) to hundreds (and thousands, yipes...)
And yes, then I too thought, OMG I may damage or lose them..
And also yes, sticker shock amplified because of multiple purchases.

I justified it by realizing that I never spent money on a purse before... I've already saved countless dollars over the years. So it averages out.

Thank you too, Vintage Leather- that so makes sense. And yes, life is too short.

Do I smile when I see the bag? Gosh, I kinda gasp. I am taken aback. With beauty. Sounds like love, huh? I catch my breath in awe - of the beautiful designs, leathers, quality...

pretty funny
