Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

I purged my knock-off collection last year because I finally wanted to splurge and bought the real thing.... haha! Very, very worth it. Though I did have some pretty good knock-offs.... (I know, I know - but they're gone now!!)

Besobonita--Congrats on getting ready for the cleaning/weeding/purging project. It's such a great feeling to tackle and give away those things you don't need.

Carterazo--Thank you for your insight. It's always nice to read stories from people who have scaled down and are able to make decisions based upon what truly works best for them.

Louch--Wow! 15 bags sold over the last year? That's just remarkable. And now you have some gorgeous bags that you really love and use often.

Vanbod--You're on a roll, girl! Once you get started, you often end up selling more than you intended because it helps you really gain clarity on what works for you. I've made the same mistake with handheld only bags and I ended up having to sell them. I just have to admire them from a distance.

As for me, I finally found the tobacco brown hobo I wanted in the RM Harewood Darling. As much as I'd like to swear off RM forever due to their ongoing CS issues, I must say this bag is fantastic and really perfect for me. It meets all my criteria, and for me, it's a keeper. Perfect for my lifestyle. I was out with all three of my kids all yesterday and it was perfect.

I guess you can say I've been inspired by this thread. I haven't gotten rid of everything, but so far it's ten down and maybe six to go. I made a list of nine bags I want to own within two years and keep it posted as my background image so whenever I start looking at something else, I'm reminded what my perfect collection looks like.

I'm getting where I need a little bit of 'approval' getting rid of what I have left, though. I was going to sell off a couple and kept getting 'But it's so pretty!' remarks when I was halfway through posting auctions. I've surrounded myself with enablers :p

FaithAnn--those pictures can really cause hangups, can't they? The bags look so pretty that we start to question why we're selling them. Just think about hte last time you carried it and what the experience was like. And besides, great pictures will help the bag find a new home faster! :smile1:

I was REALLY tempted because I bag I have long loved --one that is very hard to find--showed up for sale online but I think I've talked myself out of it. I certainly have funds left over from my other sales but when I think about which bag I would need to part with, I only have a few left and can't seem to pick one. I guess that's a sign that I've really got everything I need already. Dangit.:smile1:

Good for you for the progress you've made!

I always tell myself: "It's pretty, but I never carry it." "It's pretty, but satchels don't suit me." "It's pretty, but I already have 10 prettier black hobos."

Hope that helps!

Yep, that's what I've been doing too Doreenjoy. Good suggestion.

I've found that lately there have been several bags that I was tempted with. But none that I wanted enough to buy. I just kept asking myself "Does this fill a void in my collection?" "Do I see myself carrying this bag 6 months to a year from now?". "I already have a bag this color (or similar)... will I get use out of both of them?". It really does help!

ooohhh!!! I am glad I came upon this thread..I enjoy reading everybody's post and gave me something to think when it comes to handbags... so much words of wisdom.

I don't have a particular premier designer bag I am hoping to purchase soon as I am happy with my collection at this moment. But last year as I was packing to move to MAlaysia, I discovered ridiculous amount of handbags that I hardly use..I gave 1/2 of it to my relatives. That is when I start thinking carefully about my needs in a handbag.
Now that I am packing to move back to US , I had to scrutinize everything again ( those european airline check-in limit is downright nasty), and finally gave my mom my Coach Sabrina in Patent Graphite..beautiful but just not working for me.I am not a satchel girl!! And she looks good carrying it around Kuala Lumpur and Penang..:D

ok I confess, I am secretly lusting after the BV Parachute and Montaigne in whatever color..but I need to sell at least 1/3 of my stash to own it and at the moment, I don't feel like parting with any..

But next year? who knows...:graucho: I might not be a lurker there anymore..

Wow, you guys are truly inspiring! For years, I keep saying that I need to downsize my closet but never do. There is one bag I keep thinking I want but DH says I have to sell at least 10 of my bags before I can get it. Ten bags for one ... that's a hard decision for me!:p I guess I'm just a handbag whore! hehehe I guess baby steps is the way ... I do try to sell at least 3 bags each year but unfortunately buy back more than that! Like I said, baby steps! LOL

I'm definitely in the mood for a new (or at least new to me) bag but I just haven't found the right one yet! I think the last bag I bought was during the first week of March. I used it for awhile but alas now it's sitting in my closet.

It's funny, I can now find a fault in all the bags I have. I could quite possibly sell/give away all my bags and start over but I think that would also be a huge pain!

I like your thinking. I will think of you when I continue my downsizing activities. Especially if it's Case #1. I am just afraid I am going to have seller's remorse and go out and buy again. How have you ladies dealt with the itch when you have sold your bags and had money in the bank?

I have been in a selling moratorium for a while and I think it's time to pick it up again, especially in light of some house priorities.

Thanks for this, Doreen. I have a Speedy, and a Gucci Speedy-type bag that I love, but don't carry that often, because they are satchels.

I need to get motivated to let them go. because they are both limited edition I find myself struggling...

^^ I'm so glad my comments helped you!

When I'm in a buying mood, I force myself to wait 24 hours. The urge to buy almost always passes if I give it time.

ITA:D ... I've been doing this lately as well, I put the bag on hold for one day. So far, I haven't bought anything yet using this method, I get too lazy to go back and buy it.:graucho:
