Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

I'm doing a little experiment where I'm forcing myself to use bags I've never (or only rarely) used. Last night, I took my Mini HL out to dinner - I bought it in Dec. 2007 and it's never been used.

You know what's funny? I actually really loved wearing it! It carried everything I needed to carry and didn't look nearly as silly as I thought it might - though I do still think mini bags need to be carried with a hint of irony.

This is great. I think a great way to decide what to purge is to force yourself to carry every bag in your closet for a week. At the end of the week, are you still happy with it? Or are you tired of it and can't wait to switch bags?

I am out of purge mode and only have 3 bags which I use all 3 regularly and love them! I am also in acquire mode but still having trouble committing to purchases. I don't jump when I want/need something. I wait and research and wait some more until I feel like the want might go away...

I do the same thing...force myself to wait until the first impulse to buy is gone. It helps me think things through clearly. I had 3 bags for a full year and finally added 2 more that I'd been considering for 6 months. Giving a lot of thought to each purchase helps me avoid buyer's remorse.

I have come to the conclusion that I am much happier with 3-5 bags total. I used to think that was not going to work for me, but it appears to be my "magic number."

Oh yeah - and I just want to congratulate myself (hee hee) for NOT buying any of the Balenciagas in Noix (Nut Brown) that I am been seeing around lately...I adore the color, and it looks fantastic on others - I just know that the "no brown bag" rule has to be observed in my case.

Congrats on resisting the Bal!

And I'm glad you've come to a number you're happy with. 3-5 is my magic number, too. If I want another bag at this point, it's one in/one out.

Lo-black hobos never work for me! I can see why you got rid of your YSL...but it was a beauty! I have such a hard time finding the perfect black bag. Why is it so hard???? LOL!

Yeah...I don't know, I DO love that bag but it was not getting any love since I got into the Balenciaga...which is turning out to be PERFECT for me, now that I got over the fear of actually using them, lol!!!

Finding the perfect black bag is incredibly difficult - Now I would truly love a Damier Neverfull MM in that graphite color (I think that's what it's called - but then again you know LV better than I do) with black trim. I would buy that in a NANOSECOND.

3-5 is my magic # as well! Def the in/out rule applies after 5 :)

Great ideas, all of them! I am finding that waiting on a bag - even if it's one I see on an auction site - usually works very well. I almost always eventually forget about it, even if it was something I just "had to have" at the time. It's amazing how the human mind works. :p

I unfortunately purged earlier this year...and then slipped back into "restocking" mode...so once again I am purging...

I think I am going to take to journaling as well for bag used, money spent, savings etc....

Journaling can be a real eye-opener. I keep track of my luxury purchases, and when I started it shocked me to see in black and white how often I was "treating" myself. Keeping a list keeps me honest.

I used to keep a spreadsheet of which scarf I wore every day, but it got to be a bit tiresome. I do wear a scarf every day, and I mentally try to make sure I'm rotating them.

Doreen,

I'm a journaler as well. I use a red Moleskine weekly planner and I keep track of different things--spending, eating, exercise, until recently--ideas on what to sell, etc. There's something about the process of writing things down that really helps with clarity; I just don't get the same benefit when I try to track things on a computer. Moleskines are my other addiction!

OMG me too! I could go seriously off topic about Moleskines! It's the only notebook I'll use.

:back2topic:
My requirement for a clutch is that it has to fit my Moleskine and my favorite Sensa pen, LOL. I have 1 clutch that's too small for my Moleskine, and I'm always a little nervous when I use it...what if I have to write something down??? I have a mini notepad and pen that fits anywhere (it's smaller than a credit card) but it's not quite the same.

After purging, I'm still with my one bag. I haven't bought anything else or even been tempted. I'd say the opposite is true: getting rid of everything confirmed that collecting purses is not for me. When I'm done with this bag, I'll sell it and buy another everyday bag.

Ok, this is funny because it's a requirement for my bags--I must be able to fit a small Moleskine journal at all times! :p

Lo--I'm just the opposite on brown bags. I tend to carry brown far more often than black for some reason. I like me some brown bags!:graucho:

karmen - that's a fantastic insight! I have also learned that I just can't "collect" bags. Lip gloss, however, is another story (but much less expensive). :smile1:

I am a Moleskine FREAK!!!! I only journal in Moleskines!!!!

I have my SO hooked on the planners now, too - he won't use anything else.

Fine minds think alike. Yes, indeed. :smile1:

Oh I'm so glad ya'll brought up this listing subject. Making a list of my bags, in my moleskin helped me focus on inventory as well as where I stand mentally on handbags. I also make lists when I feel that I need to get grounded in other aspects of life. When I flounder, I get anxious. When I jot it all down, I have something visual that I can work from to re-focus.
